Notes: Abstract The subdivision of theAnthemideae into two subtribes purely on the grounds of the presence or absence of receptacular paleae can no longer be maintained. Anatomical data may serve as a basis for a more adequate division of the tribe. This survey of the stomatal apparatus types within theAnthemideae is based on the investigation of 29 species from 15 genera and the evaluation of literature data: Anomocytic stomatal apparatus occur in all species examined, anisocytic at least in all genera investigated by us. We even found representatives of some rare types, such as polo-, helico- or hemiparacytic apparatus, in nearly all species. Diacytic types were not found inOtanthus, Artemisia, Tripleurospermum, Tanacetum corymbosum, and they also appear to be lacking inSantolina andEriocephalus. Paracytic stomatal apparatus and a new type which links paracytic with actinocytic and cyclocytic was discovered inOtanthus maritimus andArtemisia stellerana.

Notes: Abstract Biseriate glandular trichomes and uniseriate flagellar covering hairs occur in all or most of the 20 genera examined and thus do not provide important taxonomical hints. In contrast, T- or Y-shaped hairs have been found inSantolina, Anthemis, Leucanthemopsis, Dendranthema, Tanacetum,Balsamita, Sphaeromeria (?),Artemisia, andAchillea clavenae only. Stellate hairs appear to be rare (inSantolina andArtemisia sect.Dracunculus). For details, additional hair types, and relationships see Tab.1 and Fig. 6.

Notes: Saccharomyces cerevisiae autoselection strains with mutations in the ura3, fur1, and urid-k genes have been obtained through a sequential isolation procedure. This autoselection system is an extension of one described by Loison et al. The mutations effectively block both the pyrimidine biosynthetic and salvage pathways and in combination are lethal to the host. Therefore, a plasmidencoded URA3 gene is essential for cell viability regardless of the growth conditions, and complex (traditionally nonselective) media can be employed without the risk of plasmid loss. The effects of medium enrichment on growth and cloned gene product synthesis were examined in batch culture for two autoselection strains. The plasmid gene product β-galactosidase was under the control of the yeast GAL1 promoter, and two methods of induction were employed; one strain was induced via temperature shift while the other was induced by galactose addition. Three nutrient media were investigated: a lean selective medium (SD), a richer semidefined medium (SDC), and a rich complex medium (YPD). The results demonstrated the improvements in cloned gene productivity possible when the growth medium is enriched, with up to 10-fold increases in β-galactosidase productivity observed. Plasmid instability and mutation reversion were not problems for the autoselection strains, even in uracil-containing medium. Short-term plasmid stabilities were approximately 90% in all three media tested. During continuous culture of the autoselection temperature-sensitive strain, long-term plasmid stability was excellent and β-galactosidase expression remained high after more than 25 residence times under inducing conditions. In contrast, both β-galactosidase specific activity and plasmid stability decreased linearly with time for an analogous nonautoselection strain. The introduced fur1 and uridk mutations were very stable; after more than 50 generations of growth in complex medium, stability values of 99-100% were measured. © 1993 Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Copolymers of methyl methacrylate and 1,3-bis(methacryloxy methyl)-1,1,3,3-tetramethyl disiloxane were prepared by chemically induced copolymerization/crosslinking at 60°C and 49 mm Hg. Crosslinked, glassy copolymers were obtained with copolymer mole fraction of the silicon-containing monomer varying from 0.09 to 0.55. Oxygen transport studies were performed with thin films as prepared and after sub-Tg annealing. The results of this study indicated that an enhancement of both the steady state oxygen permeation rate and the oxygen diffusion coefficient was achieved through copolymerization. The oxygen diffusion coefficients through the copolymers were found, within experimental error, to be independent of silicon content and ranged from 0.80 × 10-7 to 1.90 × 10-7 cm2/s vs. oxygen diffusion coefficient for pure poly(methyl methacrylate) of 1.5 × 10-8 cm2/s. Sub-Tg annealing effected a reduction of approximately equal magnitude in both the oxygen diffusion coefficient and the steady state oxygen flux for the copolymers. In addition, the normalized oxygen flux data were predicted with Fick's law, assuming constant boundry conditions and diffusion coefficient. These results were explained in terms of the free volume theory and the combined effects of increased crosslinking density, chain mobility, and oxygen solubility with increased copolymer silicon content.
