    Description: The color-magnitude diagram of giants in the Galactic spheroid is shown to be important in determining the number-color histogram of stars brighter than B = 19 mag. This result is demonstrated by comparing a standard Galaxy model with observations of 391 stars in a field in the direction of Aquarius (l = 36.5 deg, b = -51.1 deg). More than 80 percent of the spheroid stars and 40 percent of all stars in this magnitude range and direction are predicted to be giants. At most, a few percent of the spheroid stars in the current sample can lie on the main sequence bluer than the turn-off onto the giant branch near B - V approximately 0.4. The available observations suggest that the blue tip of the horizontal branch of the spheroid must be sparsely populated about a factor of 10 less than would be expected if the color-magnitude diagram of the spheroid were the same as diagrams for any of the globular clusters M3, M13, or M92. The total dispersion in colors (measurement errors and intrinsic dispersion) has a standard deviation in B - V color that is less than 0.2 mag.

    Description: Calculated and experimental oscillator strengths for the O I intersystem line at 1356 A and for other O I lines of interest in interstellar absorption-line studies are discussed. Attention is given to experimental f-values for the lines at 1302, 1305, and 1306 A, previous work on the f-values for the lines at 1356 and 1359 A, wave-function expansion, and calculations for permitted as well as intercombination lines. Copernicus observations of several interstellar absorption lines due to O I, C II, P II, and Ni II toward Zeta Oph are reported, equivalent widths are determined, and a curve-of-growth analysis is performed for the O I absorption lines. Oscillator strengths are recommended for the far-UV resonance lines of O I, and it is concluded that the oxygen in the interstellar H I regions toward Zeta Oph is depleted by 45% to 69%.

    Description: Stigmatic spectra between 4160 and 4385 A of the central regions of M31 and M32 as well as the K0 III star 51 Ori are presented which were obtained using a SEC-vidicon integrating television tube and the coude spectrograph of the Hale telescope. Line-of-sight velocity dispersions of approximately 130 and 55 km/s are determined for the nuclei of M31 and M32, respectively, by directly comparing their spectra with Gaussian-broadened spectra of 51 Ori. The analytical techniques are outlined, and alternative methods for estimating velocity dispersions are evaluated, including least-squares fitting of intensities and division of Fourier transforms. It is noted that the broadened spectrum of 51 Ori fits the nucleus of M32 and the bulge of M31 much better than the nucleus of M31 in the region between 4180 and 4370 A.

    Description: This paper reports the measurement of some 136 interstellar H2 absorption lines found in a continuous scan of the far-ultraviolet spectrum of zeta Pup at 0.05-A resolution with the Copernicus telescope. Absorptions from only the rotational levels 0 to 5 of the lowest vibrational state of the ground electronic state were observed. The total H2 column density is 2.8 by 10 to the 14th power molecules/sq cm; the ratio of H nuclei in H2 to the number in H I plus molecules is 6 by 10 to the -6th power; the population of the rotational levels can be represented by a single excitation temperature of 1120 (plus or minus 80) K. The radial velocities of all rotational levels were the same within 7 km/s and differed from most atoms and first ions by no more than 4.5 km/s on the average. The tables also list the best available data on wavelengths, oscillator strengths, and radiative damping constants for all the H2 lines with zero vibrational level likely to be observed in the interstellar gas.

    Description: With two f-values of C I lines obtained from the spectra of zeta Pup and gamma(2) Vel, it is shown that the interstellar C I spectrum in zeta Oph obeys an optical-depth relation similar to that for Na I, and the relative strengths of 19 multiplets are determined from this relation. The dominant processes which excite neutral carbon are used to calculate populations of the fine-structure levels as functions of the density of H nuclei and the temperature, and evidence is found that the C I lines are formed in the dense cloud in front of zeta Oph at a heliocentric velocity of -14.4 km/s. It is noted that the observed column-density ratios of the neutral carbon fine-structure levels lead to a total H nuclei density of about 220 to 660 per cu cm, while the electron density and observed C(+) abundance indicate a value of 10,000 per cu cm, with a 0.05 pc thick gas layer.

    Description: Results are reviewed for Copernicus far-UV measurements of the absorption lines of H I, D I, H2, and heavier elements in the interstellar gas. Column densities along several lines of sight, as estimated from Ly-alpha absorption-line profiles, confirm that wide differences in the gas density are present in various directions. The measurement of interstellar D I implies an open universe unless alternate sources for this nuclide are found. Analysis of reddened stars for which the line of sight passes through one or more interstellar clouds indicates a depletion of several heavy elements in the gas. It is suggested that the depleted elements may be present in grains rather than molecules and that the intercloud medium may consist primarily of H II with a few small H I clouds.

    Description: A high-resolution spectrum of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068, obtained with an integrating television system, is compared with the spectrum of a KO III star (delta Tau) to derive the line-of-sight velocity dispersion of the stars in the galactic nucleus. An Fe I absorption line observed at 4059.7 A yields a velocity dispersion of 150 (plus or minus 50) km/sec. An upper limit for the nuclear mass is derived in terms of this velocity dispersion, an estimated nuclear radius of 136 pc, and a Hubble constant of 50 km/sec per Mpc. The results, 14 (+10, -8) by 10 to the 8th power solar masses, is shown to be consistent with a number of quasar models scaled down in luminosity to provide the energy source for a Seyfert nucleus. Strong H and K interstellar absorption lines superposed on the spectrum of NGC 1068 are analyzed.-

    Description: Copernicus satellite measurements of HD in J-double prime = 1 and J-double prime = 0 toward Zeta Oph are reported. The ratio of the number densities of HD in the J = 0 and J = 1 states is determined to be 0.15 + or - 0.02 at the 1-sigma level. A value of approximately 24 x 10 to the -17th erg/cu cm per A at 1000 A is obtained for the UV energy density at the Zeta Oph cloud, and the mechanisms for excitation of HD are examined. A tight upper limit is derived for the abundance of HCl, which has been predicted to be present due to the interaction of ionized chlorine with neutral hydrogen. A calculation is performed which indicates that the cloud is 28 pc from the star. It is shown that the two-component cloud model of Black and Dalgarno (1977) with densities of 500 and 2500 H nuclei per cu cm for the outer regions and core, respectively, is in excellent agreement with the observations.
