    Description: The ROSAT Position Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) is used to perform an exploratory study of four fields in the Carina spiral arm containing five radio supernova remnants, only one of which has previously been studied in X-rays. We present upper limits for the detection in X-rays of G298.5 - 0.3, G298.6 - 0.0, and G299.0+0.2, and report a 4 sigma detection of G296.8-0.3. In addition, we present detailed spatial and spectral analysis of the bright X-ray remnant G296.1-0.7, which has previously been studied by both the Einstein IPC and EXOSAT LE/CMA. We detect relatively slight, but statistically significant, variations in the spectrum across the remnant via spatially resolved spectral fits and a study of the spatial variation of hardness ratios. In general, the spectrum is characteristic of a thermal plasma with kT about 0.2 keV and N(sub H) about 1.5 x 10(exp 21/sq. cm). The total X-ray emitting mass is estimated to be about 250 solar mass for an optically estimated distance of 4 kpc to the remnant. At this distance, the linear dimensions of the remnant are roughly 35 - 50 pc, implying an age on the order of 20,000 yr. Assuming that X-ray and radio brightnesses are related by SIGMA(sub R) proportional to SIGMA(exp 0.69)(sub X) and that the four radio remnants have X-ray spectral characteristics similar to G296.1-0.7, we find that the column densities to these sources must be several times 10(exp 22)/sq cm in order to explain their low X-ray count rates. This column density is considerably in excess of the X-ray fitted column density to G296.1-0.7, but is comparable to the total column densities in H I measured via the 21 cm line in the directions to all five remnants. This implies that G296.1 - 0.7 is at a significantly smaller distance than the other remnants.

    Description: The Einstein Observatory Focal Plane Crystal Spectrometer (FPCS) used the technique of Bragg spectroscopy to study cosmic X-ray sources in the 0.2-3 keV energy range. The high spectral resolving power (E/Delta-E is approximately equal to 100-1000) of this instrument allowed it to resolve closely spaced lines and study the structure of individual features in the spectra of 41 cosmic X-ray sources. An archival summary of the results is presented as a concise record the FPCS observations and a source of information for future analysis by the general astrophysics community. For each observation, the instrument configuration, background rate, X-ray flux or upper limit within the energy band observed, and spectral histograms are given. Examples of the contributions the FPCS observations have made to the understanding of the objects observed are discussed.

    Description: The focal plane crystal spectrometer (FPCS) on the Einstein Observatory has been used to perform a high-resolution spectroscopic search for oxygen X-ray line emission from four active galaxies: Fairall 9, Mrk 421, Mrk 501, and PKS 0548 - 322. Specifically, O VIII Ly-alpha and Ly-beta, whose unredshifted energies are 653 and 775 eV, respectively, were sought. No narrow-line emission was detected within the energy bands searched. Upper limits are calculated on the line flux from these sources of 30 eV equivalent width and use a photoionization model to place corresponding upper limits on the densities of diffuse gas surrounding the active nuclei. The upper limits on gas density range from about 0.02-50/cu cm and probe various radial distances from the central source. This is the first time high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy has been used to place constraints on the intercloud medium in active galaxies.

    Description: A joint nonequilibrium ionization analysis of spectral data from the Einstein Observatory of the SNR N132D in the LMC is presented on the basis of data from the Focal Plane Crystal Spectrometer (FPCS) and the Solid State Spectrometer (SSS), and lower spectral resolution data from the IPC and the Monitor Proportional Counter (MPC). The FPCS detected individual emission lines of O VII, O VIII, Ne IX, Ne X, Fe XVII, and possibly Fe XX. Measured line widths for the oxygen lines suggest Doppler broadening that is roughly consistent with optically measured expansion velocities of 2250 km/s. At the SSS/IPC temperature, FPCS flux ratios constrain the O/Fe abundance to be at least 1.9 times its solar value and the O/Ne abundance to be 0.2-1.0 times its solar value. Models for remnants with progenitor masses of 20 and 25 solar masses are completely consistent with the data, while remnants with progenitor masses of 13 and 15 solar masses can be made consistent if the progenitors are required to eject a large fraction of their iron cores.

    Description: Techniques employing individual X-ray line strengths to estimate the rate at which gas cools in the intracluster medium are discussed. It is demonstrated that departures from ionization equilibrium in the cooling plasma are not important at X-ray temperatures. Nonrestrictive upper limits are obtained for four cooling flow clusters. The results favor the existence of substantial cooling flows and argue against the dominance of conduction or other heat sources.
