    Description: Data fron the high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy experiment on HEAO 3 have been searched for line emission from the decay of Ti-44 created in recent, as yet unobserved, Galactic supernova explosions, where the ages and locations are unknown. Because the 78 yr mean life of Ti-44 is comparable to the average time between Galactic supernovae, the gamma-ray line emission from its decay should appear as Galactic point sources. No evidence was found for such emission from a point source anywhere in the Galactic plane, with a 1-sigma limit of 8.3 x 10 exp -5 photons/sq cm per sec. Detailed models were developed to simulate the Galactic gamma-ray emission from the decay of Ti-44 produced in both type I and type II supernovae. These models were used with the measured gamma-ray line limits to constrain the supernova yields and recurrence periods.

    Description: A model of anisotropic, plasma-fluid variations was used to investigate the unknown origin of the power spectra of interstellar electron fluctuations inferred by Armstrong, Cordes, and Rickett (1981). The modeled electron variations are interpreted as density components of an anisotropic stationary mode of nonlinear magnetogasdynamics-tangential pressure balances. It is suggested that the wavenumber spectra of electron variations are identical to the spectra of the convecting velocity fields over a wide range of wavenumbers.

    Description: We have applied the V/V(max) test to candidate gamma-ray bursts detected by the Gamma-Ray Spectrometer (GRS) aboard the SMM satellite to examine quantitatively the uniformity of the burst source population. For a sample of 132 candidate bursts identified in the GRS data by an automated search using a single uniform trigger criterion we find average V/V(max) = 0.40 +/- 0.025. This value is significantly different from 0.5, the average for a uniform distribution in space of the parent population of burst sources; however, the shape of the observed distribution of V/V(max) is unusual and our result conflicts with previous measurements. For these reasons we can currently draw no firm conclusion about the distribution of burst sources.

    Description: Cash et al. (1980) observed an incomplete X-ray shell in the Cygnus region with a temperature of 2 x 10 to the 6th K and a density of 0.02 per cu cm. This feature closely resembles Loop I, a nearby supernova remnant expanding in a tenuous (less than 0.01 per cu cm) medium. A similar origin - remnant expansion in a tenuous intercloud medium with the bulk of the interstellar gas concentrated in clouds - is suggested for the Cygnus X-ray feature. This model greatly reduces the required initial thermal energy. Remnant shock interaction with ambient interstellar clouds produces the observed H-alpha filaments.

    Description: If a hot (temperature of about one-million K), tenuous gas fills about 90% of interstellar space, then the observed number and surface brightness distribution of galactic radio remnants implies a galactic supernova rate of once about every 30 years. This is consistent with estimates based on observations of historical supernovae, pulsars, and supernovae in other spiral galaxies.

    Description: A self-consistent theoretical model of turbulent fluctuations in a compressible electrically conducting gas is developed in order to quantitatively study a turbulent fluid origin for the small spiral scale density fluctuations observed by Armstrong et al. (1981). A heuristic description of turbulent flows in compressible fluids is offered as an analogy for the small-scale turbulent velocity and magnetic field variations which derive density variations in the presence of a strong local magnetic field.

    Description: We investigate in more detail the properties of two-population models for gamma-ray bursts in the galactic disk and halo. We calculate the gamma-ray burst statistical properties, mean value of (V/V(sub max)), mean value of cos Theta, and mean value of (sin(exp 2) b), as functions of the detection flux threshold for bursts coming from both Galactic disk and massive halo populations. We consider halo models inferred from the observational constraints on the large-scale Galactic structure and we compare the expected values of mean value of (V/V(sub max)), mean value of cos Theta, and mean value of (sin(exp 2) b), with those measured by Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) and other detectors. We find that the measured values are consistent with solely Galactic populations having a range of halo distributions, mixed with local disk distributions, which can account for as much as approximately 25% of the observed BATSE bursts. M31 does not contribute to these modeled bursts. We also demonstrate, contrary to recent arguments, that the size-frequency distributions of dual population models are quite consistent with the BATSE observations.

    Description: The V/V(max) test applied to a well-defined sample of objects provides a quantitative test for the uniformity of the space distribution of the parent population of the objects. The application of this test to gamma-ray bursts is discussed. In contrast to tests involving size-frequency distributions, the V/V(max) test is independent of variations in sensitivity. The use of the V/V(max) test on a small sample of bursts from the HEAO A-4 experiment is illustrated. It is urged that experimenters publish the detection limit for each recorded gamma-ray burst.
