Beschreibung: A scintillation spectrometer is included in each of the eight BATSE/GRO detector modules, resulting in all-sky coverage for gamma-ray bursts. The scientific motivation, design and capabilities of these spectrometers for performing spectral observations over a wide range of gamma-ray energies and burst intensities are described.

Beschreibung: The UCSD/MIT Hard X-Ray and Low Energy Gamma-Ray Experiment aboard HEAO-1 scanned the galactic center region during three epochs in 1977 and 1978 from 13 to 180 keV. The results are presented from the scanning epoch of 1978 September. Twenty-two known 2 to 10 keV source positions were necessary for an acceptable fit to the data. The spectra of the 16 strongest, least confused sources are all consistent with power laws with photon spectral indices ranging from 2.1 to 7.2. Acceptable fits to thermal bremsstrahlung models are also possible for most sources. No one source in this survey can be extrapolated to higher energy to match the intensity of the gamma-ray continuum as measured by HEAO-1 large field of view detectors, which implies that the continuum is a composite of contributions from a number of sources.

Beschreibung: The spectrum of the diffuse X and gamma ray background was measured between 15 keV and 4 MeV with the scintillation detectors aboard the HEAO 1 satellite. The apertures of the detectors were modulated on time scales of hours and the difference in counting rates measured the diffuse component flux. The observed spectrum is presented and compared with other measurements. At least two components are indicated, one below -100 keV and the other above. Possible origins are discussed.

Beschreibung: A search of data from the High Energy X-Ray and Low Energy Gamma Ray Experiment on HEAO-1 uncovered 14 gamma ray bursts. Nine of these events are reported for the first tiome. Except for the faintest events, all of the bursts detected by this experiment have been measured above an MeV, thereby confirming the hard spectral character of gamma ray burst spectra reported by SMM. Results give a burst rate of at least 105 per year above 6 times 10 to the minus 7th power ergs, which is consistent with previous measurements of burst frequency.

Beschreibung: Results from preliminary analysis of HEAO-1 pointing observations of Her X-1 on three days in February 1978 are presented. Pulsed flux is detected up to approximately 70 keV with a clear indication of emission at approximately 60 deV which is above the continuum spectrum extrapolated from lower energies. If this excess emission is interpreted as a spectral line, its intensity varies from (1.2 plus or minus 0.2) x (10 to the minus 3 power) to (0.2 plus or minus 0.2) x (10 to the minus 3 power) ph/sq cm-sec with a time scale of one day. A factor 2 decrease in the low energy continuum is associated with the decrease in the excess emission.

Beschreibung: Results of new measurements of the total cosmic gamma-ray spectrum in the 0.3- to 27-MeV range obtained on Apollo 15. These data were obtained with an isotropic scintillation counter similar to that used on Ranger 3 and ERS-18. The new high-precision data permit extension and clarification of the spectrum above 1 MeV, where recent balloon and earth-satellite observations have caused doubts as to the validity of the ERS-18 data.

Beschreibung: Obtained results are reported on three known extragalactic sources - M87, M31, and 3C 273 - studied in the 20-300 keV range from balloons in 1970. With the possible exception of M87, a null result was obtained in each case. The statistical uncertainties of the M87 measurements are pointed out, and the implications of the null results are discussed.

Beschreibung: The spectrum of the total (diffuse and discrete sources) cosmic gamma-ray background over the 0.3 to 27 MeV range was measured with a 7.0 cm diameter x 7.0 cm long uncollimated NaI(Tl) scintillation counter located on a boom 7.6 m from the Apollo 15 service module. Data on cosmic gamma-rays were taken during transearth coast at various boom extensions, detector gains, and with the plastic anticoincidence scintillator enabled and disabled.

Beschreibung: A semi-empirical model is discussed which describes atmospheric gamma rays in the range 0.3 less then or equal to E less than or equal to 10 MeV based on the production per unit mass of air. The model is based on the concept of a source strength (photon/g sec MeV) which is energy- and depth-dependent, and derived from measured fluxes. Quantities such as directional fluxes, angular distributions, and growth curves are calculated directly from this model. The source function is described by four energy-dependent parameters determined empirically from fluxes measured with a 7.5 cm x 7.5 cm Nal counter over the atmospheric depth range from 3.5 to 500 g/sq cm. From S(E,x), obtained for both continuum and discrete gamma rays at lambda = 40 deg, the depth and angle dependence of directional fluxes were calculated. Growth-curve predictions needed to separate atmospheric from diffuse cosmic fluxes were determined.
