Notes: Abstract Thefunction lattice L P is the lattice of all isotone maps from a posetP into a latticeL. D. Duffus, B. Jónsson, and I. Rival proved in 1978 that for afinite poset P, the congruence lattice ofL P is a direct power of the congruence lattice ofL; the exponent is |P|. This result fails for infiniteP. However, utilizing a generalization of theL P construction, theL[D] construction (the extension ofL byD, whereD is a bounded distributive lattice), the second author proved in 1979 that ConL[D] is isomorphic to (ConL) [ConD] for afinite lattice L. In this paper we prove that the isomorphism ConL[D]≅(ConL)[ConD] holds for a latticeL and a bounded distributive latticeD iff either ConL orD is finite.

Description: It is possible to obtain the masses of Cepheid variables by several methods involving the pulsation theory. However, these masses are frequently smaller than those indicated by the theory of stellar evolution. The cause of this discrepancy is not fully understood. Since the pulsation theory indicates that there is a relation among the mass, the radius and the period, the discrepancy also manifests itself in the radii of these stars. With this in mind, radius determinations for two Cepheids, SU Cas and TU Cas, were undertaken. It is concluded that because of the agreement between the present radius and the beat radius of TU Cas, the pulsation theory is giving correct information about the radii of beat Cepheids. This implies that the luminosities of short period Cepheids have been overestimated. Thus, the solution to the mass discrepancy should perhaps be sought in the theory of stellar evolution or in the possibility of mass loss.

Description: A program to study the behavior of chromospheres in classical Cepheids using both ground-based and satellite-based observations. Five stars, delta Cep, nu Aql, beta Dor, zeta Gem, and l Car, have been included, and where possible the various types of data have been obtained simultaneously. The first part of this investigation concerns low dispersion spectra from the IUE satellite. Fine error sensor (FES) magnitudes are presented for the five Cepheids and, in the case of one, nu Aql, are used to rediscuss the period. The 'artificial viscosity dip' predicted by some theoretical calculations may be present in the FES light curve of delta Cep. The low dispersion spectra have been used to determine continuum magnitudes at various UV wavelengths, and light curves are shown. The amplitude increases with decreasing wavelength except around 1550 A. Line emission in the short wavelength region is observed in three of the Cepheids and is found to be phase dependent. Some correspondence is found between the variation of the emission lines and the appearance of bumps on the UV light curves.

Description: The profiles of the Mg II h and k lines near 2900 A are studied on the basis of IUE long wavelength camera high resolution spectra for a number of phases of each of five Cepheids. An emission feature often appears at the centers of the two lines, and there are central absorption features as well, due to interstellar or circumstellar gas, which are often multiple and may or may not originate in a region which is at least several tenths of a stellar radius in extent. While the mean flux of the emission is lower than for nonvariable stars of similar temperature and luminosity, the maximum strength of the emission is in keeping with the instantaneous temperature. In the second part of this paper, it is noted that little significant chromospheric emission could be found in the short wavelength region for the shortest period star in the sample, Delta Cep. In order to detect the emissions or place lower limits on the fluxes, longer exposures have been obtained at several critical phases for three of the five stars. While the strength, when detected, is similar to that of nonvariables, the upper limits at other places indicate smaller fluxes than those observed in nonvariable stars.

Description: Tests to determine the tensile and fatigue properties of Inconel 718 at cryogenic temperatures show that the alloy increases in strength at low temperatures, with very little change in toughness. The effect of surface finish and grain size on the fatigue properties was also determined.
