    Notes: Abstract Lampreys exhibit important structural and biochemical differences in their connective tissues relative to higher vertebrates. The lamprey ventral aorta wall, for example, is composed principally of microfibrils, not elastin and collagen as in higher vertebrates. Our working hypothesis was that this arrangement of microfibrils is primitive, but provides sufficient elastic behaviour to function as aortae in higher vertebrates. To support this hypothesis, we measured the mechanical properties of the ventral aorta wall of the lamprey, and showed that the architecture provides a mechanical structure that does produce functional mechanical properties similar to aortae in higher vertebrates.

    Notes: Abstract The presence of elastic fibres in the extracellular matrix (ECM) provides physiologically important elastic properties for many tissues. Until recently, microfibrils, one component of the ECM, were thought primarily to serve as a scaffolding on which elastin is deposited during development to form elaunin fibres [1]. The most prominent protein that forms mammalian microfibrils is fibrillin. It is known that mutations in the fibrillin gene cause a heterogenous connective tissue disease called marfan syndrome [2], so information on mechanical properties of microfibrils or their role in tissue function would be useful. Microfibrils are also found in the ECM of some invertebrate tissues, and there is growing evidence that the protein forming the structure is homologous to mammalian fibrillin [3, 4]. It has been shown that the microfibril-based arterial wall of the lobster has viscoelastic properties [5], and we have now utilized this primitive artery to measure the modulus of elasticity of microfibrils. It is similar to that of the rubber-like protein elastin.

    Description: Infrared imaging of interacting galaxies is especially interesting because their optical appearance is often so chaotic due to extinction by dust and emission from star formation regions, that it is impossible to locate the nuclei or determine the true stellar distribution. However, at near-infrared wavelengths extinction is considerably reduced, and most of the flux from galaxies originates from red giant stars that comprise the dominant stellar component by mass. Thus near infrared images offer the opportunity to study directly components of galactic structure which are otherwise inaccessible. Such images may ultimately provide the framework in which to understand the activity taking place in many of the mergers with high Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) luminosities. Infrared images have been useful in identifying double structures in the nuclei of interacting galaxies which have not even been hinted at by optical observations. A striking example of this is given by the K images of Arp 220. Graham et al. (1990) have used high resolution imaging to show that it has a double nucleus coincident with the radio sources in the middle of the dust lane. The results suggest that caution should be applied in the identification of optical bright spots as multiple nuclei in the absence of other evidence. They also illustrate the advantages of using infrared imaging to study the underlying structure in merging galaxies. The authors have begun a program to take near infrared images of galaxies which are believed to be mergers of disk galaxies because they have tidal tails and filaments. In many of these the merger is thought to have induced exceptionally luminous infrared emission (cf. Joseph and Wright 1985, Sanders et al. 1988). Although the optical images of the galaxies show spectacular dust lanes and filaments, the K images all have a very smooth distribution of light with an apparently single nucleus.

    Description: NGC6240 is a member of the class of luminous galaxies which emit a significant fraction of their total light in the infrared. Based on its highly disturbed morphology, Fosbury and Wall (1979) suggested that the system may be a merger of two gas rich galaxies. It has two nuclei separated by 2 arcsec which are visible in the near infrared and at radio wavelengths and CO observations show that the galaxy contains a large mass of molecular gas. Unusually strong H2 emission lines dominate the near infrared spectrum of this galaxy. The galaxy emits approximately 4x10(exp 7) solar luminosity in the 2.12 micron v = 1 to 0 S(1) line alone, an order of magnitude more than other merging or starburst galaxies. To provide a better understanding of the physical processes responsible for the H2 emission from NGC6240 we have begun a program to obtain high spectral resolution observations using the echelle in CGS4 on the UKIRT. Preliminary data which were obtained in February 1991 are presented here. It is intended to obtain further observations with twice the spatial and spectral resolution in June of this year.

    Description: We have superpolished a diamond-turned aluminum mandrel (coated with electroless Ni) to an axial roughness of 0.34 nm rms. The mandrel is made to the Astro-E secondary mirror design for the 81st shell. Precision metrology at 100 mm to submicron scales has established the power spectral density of the mandrel and ultralightweight gold coated replicated segments. Predicted image quality of a set of optimally aligned replicated segments of this and a matching primary is substantially improved as compared to the flight mirrors for Astro-E. This approach using metal mandrels, superpolishing, and replicated ultralightweight foil mirrors, may represent a cost-effective approach to meeting the 15 arcsec half-energy width and weight requirements for the Constellation-X mission. Descriptions of the polishing apparatus, the precision metrology instruments, and the surface data analysis are presented. The general methods described are applicable to precision optics for both normal incidence and grazing incidence optics.
