    Description: Results of a search for extended CO(7-6) line emission in the Orion A molecular cloud using the University of Texas submillimeter laser heterodyne receiver are presented. The large-scale distribution of quiescent CO(7-6) emission is mapped along a cut across the Trapezium cluster extending more than 13 arcmin (nearly 2 pc) in R.A. The receiver, observing method, and calibration techniques are described, and the CO(7-6) spectra and maps are presented. The physical parameters and energetics of the molecular gas are discussed. The findings are compared with observations of other high-luminosity star-forming regions.

    Description: The Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) sampled the entire asteroid population at wavelengths from 12 to 100 microns during its 1983 all sky survey. The IRAS Minor Planet Survey (IMPS) includes updated results for more recently numbered as well as other additional asteroids with reliable orbital elements. Albedos and diameters were derived from the observed thermal emission and assumed absolute visual magnitudes and then entered into the IMPS database at the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center (IPAC) for members of the Themis, Eos, Koronis and Maria asteroid families and compared with their visual colors. The IMPS results for the small (down to about 20 km) asteroids within these major families confirm trends previously noted for their larger members. Each of these dynamical families which are defined by their similar proper elements appears to have homogeneous physical properties.

    Description: Full-disk solar spectral irradiances at solar maximum were obtained in the spectral range 1200-2550 A at a spectral resolution of approximately 1 A from rocket observations above White Sands, New Mexico, on June 5, 1979. Comparison with measurements made near solar minimum indicates approximately a factor of 2.5 increase in the irradiance at 1200 A, a 20% increase near 1800 A, and no increase within our measurement errors (+ or - 15%) above 2100 A. Irradiances in the range 1800-2100 A are in excellent agreement with previous measurements, but those in the 2100- to 2550-A range are significantly lower. The intensities of strong emission lines at wavelengths below 1850 A are also reported.

    Description: Observations within 1 arcmin of Orion-KL have led to the detection of the O-16H rotational cross-ladder transition at 53.351 microns and the O-18H rotational ground-state transition at 120.1719 microns, both of which exhibit a P-Cygni profile and demonstrate that the OH gas is expanding out from the central BN/KL IR cluster. The best overall fit to these data requires emission from the three main components of the gas: (1) postshocked gas, (2) the cool postshocked region, and (3) the plateau region. All three components require a significant radiative background in order to fit the data.

    Description: The depletion of condensable elements onto grains in gaseous nebulae can provide evidence that dust is well mixed with the ionized gas. Al and CA are two of the most depleted elements in the general interstellar medium, and it is therefore important to measure their abundances within the ionized region of nebulae. We compute a large grid of photoionization models and identify sets of line ratios which are relatively insensitive to stellar and nebular parameters, and are thus excellent diagnostics for determining relative abundances. Based on the absence of the ((Ca II) lambda lambda 291, 7324 doublet and the detection of Al II) lambda lambda 2660, 2669 in the ultraviolet, we determine the extent of aluminum and calcium depletion onto grains in NGC 7027 and the Orion Nebula. Our results show a approximately 0.3 dex depletion for Al, but a depletion of more than two and a half orders of magnitude for Ca. A similar calculation based on Mg II lambda 2798 yields roughly a 0.8 dex depletion for Mg. This reaffirms the discrepancy between depletion determined from high and low ionization Mg lines. We also find evidence for a 'depletion gradient' in Ca in NGC 7027, since the calcium depletion we infer for the outer, more neutral regions using (Ca II) is somewhat higher than that inferred for the inner high-ionization region, using (Ca v). This gradient can test current models of the survival of grains within hot ionized gas.

    Description: We calculate the spectral hardness ratios for several intense gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) which have sufficient statistics in four energy channels. We study the evolution of these hardness ratios during the events using color-color diagrams (CCDs) and we attempt a preliminary classification of GRBs based on their CCD evolution.

    Description: Solar EUV observations from the Langmuir probe on Pioneer Venus Orbiter suggest that at EUV wavelengths solar cycle 22 was more active than solar cycle 21. The Langmuir probe, acting as a photodiode, measured the integrated solar EUV flux over a 13 1/2 year period from January 1979 to June 1992, the longest continuous solar EUV measurement. The Ipe EUV flux correlated very well with the SME measurement of L-alpha during the lifetime of SME and with the UARS SOLSTICE L-alpha from October 1991 to June 1992 when the Ipe measurement ceased. Starting with the peak of solar cycle 21, there was good general agreement of Ipe EUV with the 10.7 cm, Ca K, and He 10830 solar indices, until the onset of solar cycle 22. From 1989 to the start of 1992, the 10.7 cm flux exhibited a broad maximum consisting of two peaks of nearly equal magnitude, whereas Ipe EUV exhibited a strong increase during this time period making the second peak significantly higher than the first. The only solar index that exhibits the same increase in solar activity as Ipe EUV and L-alpha during the cycle 22 peak is the total magnetic flux. The case for high activity during this peak is also supported by the presence of very high solar flare intensity.

    Description: The first available 44 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by the Burst and Transient Source Experiment on board the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory have been inspected for echo signals following shortly after the main signal. No significant echoes have been found. Echoes would have been expected were the GRBs distant enough and the universe populated with a sufficient density of compact objects composing the dark matter. Constraints on dark matter abundance and GRB redshifts from the present data are presented and discussed. Based on these preliminary results, a universe filled to critical density of compact objects between 10 exp 6.5 and 10 exp 8.1 solar masses are now marginally excluded, or the most likely cosmological distance paradigm for GRBs is not correct. We expect future constraints to be able either to test currently popular cosmological dark matter paradigms or to indicate that GRBs do not lie at cosmological distances.

    Description: The integrated number-peak-flux relation measured by the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on board the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory is compared with several standard cosmological distributions for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Friedmann-Robertson-Walker models were used along with the assumption that the bursts are standard candles and have no number or luminosity evolution. For a given Omega spectral shape, we used a free parameter, essentially the comoving number density of bursts, to generate a best fit between the cosmology and the measured relation. Our results are shown for a subsample of the first 260 GRBs recorded by BATSE. We find acceptable fits between simple cosmological models and the brightness distribution data, as determined by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov one-distribution statistical test. One cannot distinguish a single best cosmological model from the goodness of the fits. The best fit implies that BATSE GRBs are complete out to a redshift of about unity. However, significantly higher and lower redshifts, by as much as a factor of 2, are possible for other marginally acceptable fits.

    Description: We report the detection of 10 micrometer emission from the transient low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) and optical nova GRO J0422+32 near the maximum of its outburst. We discuss this result in terms of (1) a 'standard' model according to which low-energy radiation of LMXB is caused by reprocessing of X-rays in an accretion disk; (2) emission from a cool secondary star; (3) emission from dust grains heated by the transient X-rays, and (4) free-free emission from an X-ray-driven wind from the accretion disk. Only the fourth alternative provides a viable explanation for the observed 10 micrometer emission, with a mass-loss rate in the disk wind that may be substantially higher than the rate of accretion onto the compact star. The presence of such a wind may have a profound effect on the evolution of the binary, and contribute to the solution of the 'birthrate problem' of millisecond ratio pulsars.
