    Notes: Abstract. This study examines the effect of family structure on high school graduation by race and gender using data from the first twenty-one waves of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics and recently available retrospective marital histories. The nature of the data allows for a more complete specification of family structure than has been heretofore possible. The analysis tests the hypothesis that the negative effect on educational attainment often associated with living in a mother-only or stepfather family stems primarily from the reduced level of economic resources available to these households. Empirical findings indicate that living with a widowed, divorced, or separated mother has little or no effect on educational attainment once we control for economic status. However, living in a stepfather family appears to have a persistent negative effect on high school graduation rates.

    Notes: Modified polyimide films containing cobalt have been prepared by the addition of cobalt(II) chloride to a solution containing one of the diamines 4,4′-oxydianiline (ODA) or 4,4′-diaminodiphenylsulfide (DDS) and one of the dianhydrides 3.3′, 4,4′-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) or 4,4′-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)diphenylsulfide dianhydride (BDSDA) and characterized by thermal methods, UV-visible spectra, room-temperature direct-current electrical resistivity measurements, and X-ray photoelectron and Auger electron spectroscopy. A principal goal of this work was to establish if there was coordination of the potential donor atoms of the polymide to cobalt. UV-visible spectra of the modified polyamic acid solutions and polyimide films and a titration study of a model system do not show any appreciable coordination with either the polyamic acid or the polyimide; rather, the cobalt(II) appears to be coordinated to the solvent, N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc), as [Co(DMAc)4]2+, until the temperature is raised above 200°C. X-ray photoelectron spectra of films cured only to 200°C also do not show significant shifts in the binding energies of the potential donor atoms from those binding energies of the undoped polymers, confirming little direct coordination of the cobalt to atoms of the polyimide. Heating the films to 300°C in a forced-air oven causes the formation of a cobalt oxide layer on the air side of the polymer. Direct-current electrical resistivity measurements on this surface show a 104-106 reduction in resistivity due to this layer.

    Description: NASA's Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) carries three scientific instruments to make precise measurements of the spectrum and anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation on angular scales greater than 7 deg and to conduct a search for a diffuse cosmic infrared background (CIB) radiation with 0.7 deg angular resolution. Data from the Far-Infrared Absolute Spectrophotometer (FIRAS) show that the spectrum of the CMB is that of a blackbody of temperature T = 2.73 +/- 0.06 K, with no deviation from a blackbody spectrum greater than 0.25% of the peak brightness. The first year of data from the Differential Microwave Radiometers (DMR) show statistically significant CMB anisotropy. The anisotropy is consistent with a scale invariant primordial density fluctuation spectrum. Infrared sky brightness measurements from the Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE) provide new conservative upper limits to the CIB. Extensive modeling of solar system and galactic infrared foregrounds is required for further improvement in the CIB limits.

    Description: Low-resolution UV observations of the bright, low-redshift BL Lac object PKS 2155-304 have been obtained by the HST's high-resolution spectrograph. Attention is here given to results on the number of intergalactic H I Ly-alpha components in the line-of-sight toward this object. The highest-redshift of the observed Ly-alpha systems furnishes a lower limit on the distance of the BL Lac object; this distance is consistent with the approximate redshift deduced from CCD imagery of the probable host galaxy for PKS 2155-304.

    Description: The cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) spectrum measured by the Far-Infrared Absolute Spectrophotometer (FIRAS) instrument on NASA's Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) is indistinguishable from a blackbody, implying stringent limits on energy release in the early universe later than the time t = 1 yr after the big bang. We compare the FIRAS data to previous precise measurements of the cosmic microwave background spectrum and find a reasonable agreement. We discuss the implications of the absolute value of y is less than 2.5 x 10(exp -5) and the absolute value of mu is less than 3.3 x 10(exp -4) 95% confidence limits found by Mather et al. (1994) on many processes occurring after t = 1 yr, such as explosive structure formation, reionization, and dissipation of small-scale density perturbations. We place limits on models with dust plus Population III stars, or evolving populations of IR galaxies, by directly comparing the Mather et al. spectrum to the model predictions.

    Description: This paper presents UV spectroscopy of a circumnuclear starburst knot in the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068, a close-by active galaxy which has some of the most luminous known starburst knots. The spectrum shows the presence of several thousand O and B stars which appear to have formed about 3 million years ago.

    Description: The preliminary design for the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS), which has been selected by NASA for definition study for future flight as a second-generation instrument on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), is presented. STIS is a two-dimensional spectrograph that will operate from 1050 A to 11,000 A at the limiting HST resolution of 0.05 arcsec FWHM, with spectral resolutions of 100, 1200, 20,000, and 100,000 and a maximum field-of-view of 50 x 50 arcsec. Its basic operating modes include echelle model, long slit mode, slitless spectrograph mode, coronographic spectroscopy, photon time-tagging, and direct imaging. Research objectives are active galactic nuclei, the intergalactic medium, global properties of galaxies, the origin of stellar systems, stelalr spectral variability, and spectrographic mapping of solar system processes.
