    Notes: Rheological and processing parameters have been measured for a commercial polystyrene at temperatures from 155°C to 210°C resulting in no clear evidence for the existence of liquidliquid transition. Zero shear viscosities obtained from dynamic measurements and ends corrections and extrudate swell from capillary rheometry are analyzed, with the conclusion that the mechanism of flow is the same throughout the range of temperatures considered.

    Notes: The viscosty and the recoverable shear compliance of poly(viny chloride)/dioctyl phthalate systems are studied at different temperatures and concentrations. The recoverable shear compliance is determined by the method of the stress relaxation after cessation of flow in a Couette flow viscosimeter. The results show the existence of a concentration dependent critical temperature Tc which separates two different flow regions.

    Description: A new method using ammonia solutions in pre-evacuated quartz bottles has been experimented for volcanic gas sampling and analysing. Various tests (reproducibility, variability and comparison with known methods such as NaOH pre-evacuated bottles and acid condensates) have been performed to check for their efficiency. By using ammonia solutions, acid gases (St, HCl, HF), carbon dioxide, noncondensible gases (N2, Ar, …) and metallic trace elements (MTE) can be measured with standard methods (HPLC, GC, titrimetry, ICP-MS). Results showthat acid gases, CO2 and noncondensible gases are sampled and analysedwith similar efficiency inNH4OHbottles than by using the known and accurate NaOH method.Moreover, a key point is that NH4OH solutions, after undergoing adequate processing (oxidation and acidification) allow also precise MTE measurements by using standard ICP-MS methods. Such MTE measurements appear much more reliable than those performed on acid condensates. Pre-evacuated ammonia bottles appear therefore as an optimum tool to collect volcanic gases and to obtain their complete chemical composition.

    Description: A new apparatus, Venturi Effect System (VES), designed for sampling volcanic plumes is described and tested at Vulcano (Italy). This device, together with purified basic NH4OH solutions, supplies optimal conditions to obtain reliable Stotal/Cl/F ratios and enrichment factors for metallic trace elements (MTE). Good concordance for acid gas ratios and metal enrichment factors in both the gas phase and the related plume allows the procedure to be validated. The VES appears in Vulcano conditions as a simple, robust and easily portable apparatus that allows reliable collection of both acid gases and MTE within a single sample and the analysis with current chemical methods (High Pressure Liquid Chromatography, Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry. This apparatus may be suitable for more difficult volcanoes where only the plume can be sampled.

    Description: Low-energy 1-AU cosmic-ray spectra obtained using the IMP-8 satellite cosmic-ray telescope (Garcia-Munoz et al., 1975) at quiet times during the solar minimum of 1972-1977 are reported and combined with published data on that minimum and the previous one (1965), with a focus on the anomalous He-4 and heavy-nucleus spectra and proton and helium superfluxes observed in 1972-1977. The 56-MeV/nucleon H-2/H-1 and H-2/He-4 abundance ratios and the differential energy spectra are plotted versus time and solar modulation level over an entire cycle, and the proton and He superfluxes, which do not contribute to the anomalies, are attributed to the reduced levels of residual modulation present during 1972-1977.

    Description: The relative abundances of the elements H through Ni in the galactic cosmic rays have been measured in the energy range 70-280 MeV/nucleon with the University of Chicago cosmic ray telescope on board the satellite IMP-8 from January 1973 to September 1978. Cosmic ray source abundances have been derived by extrapolating the measured composition back to the source. A key factor in the propagation calculation is the use of a pathlength distribution and a solar modulation level shown to be consistent with the secondary to primary ratios and their energy dependence below about 1 GeV/n.
