    Description / Table of Contents: Die Kristallstruktur der Modifikation III von isotaktischem Poly-1-buten, (Poly(1-Äthyläthylen)), wurde mit Hilfe von Röntgen-Pulveraufnahmen bestimmt. Diese Technik mußte angewandt werden, da es unmöglich ist, von dieser Modifikation Faserdiagramme zu erhalten.Das Polymere Kristallisiert im orthorhombischen System mit den Gitterparametern a = 12,38±0,08 Å; b = 8,88±0,06 Å; c = 7,56±0,05 Å; (Richtung der Helix-Achse). Die Elementarzelle enthält acht Monomereinheiten, die Raumgruppe ist P212121. In Abweichung zu den Modifikationen I und II liegt hier eine 4/1 Helix vor.Die Struktur besteht aus einer angenähert hexagonalen Packung von antiklinen isomorphen Helices. Der R'-Faktor, der die übereinstimmung zwischen den berechneten und den beobachteten Reflexintensitäten charakterisiert, hat den Wert 0,104.
    Notes: The crystal structure of form III of isotactic poly-1-butene, (poly(1-ethylethylene)), has been determined by X-ray powder diffraction techniques, owing to the impossibility of obtaining fiber spectra on this form.The polymer crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, with lattice dimensions: a = 12,38±0,08 Å; b = 8,88±0,06 Å; c = 7,56±0,05 Å; (direction coinciding with the helix axis). The unit cell contains eight monomeric units and the space group is P212121. The structural determination allows to ascertain a conformation 4/1 for the polymer helix, different from those of the other polymorphs I and II.The structure consists of anticlinic isomorphous helices which are packed in an approximately hexagonal coordination. The discrepancy factor R', evaluated by comparing the calculated and observed intensities, is equal to 0,104.

    Description / Table of Contents: Der Einfluß verschiedener Temperbedingungen auf die kristalline Ordnung von isotaktischem, parakristallinem Polypropylen wird beschrieben.Die Ergebnisse unterstützen die Annahme eines bestimmten innermolekularen Umformungsprozesses. Angenommen wird eine Umorganisation von helixförmigen Segmenten von verschiedener Länge und entgegengesetztem Drehsinn. Solch ein Mechanismus ist in Übereinstimmung mit der gemessenen Abhängigkeit eines bestimmten Ordnungsparameters von der Temperzeit. Dieser Parameter zeigt sich empfindlich gegenüber der Tempertemperatur und bleibt nach Erreichen eines Sättigungswertes konstant. Die Sättigung stellt sich bei höheren Temperaturen schr schnell ein.
    Notes: The influence of different annealing treatments on the crystalline order of isotactic paracrystalline polypropylene is described.The result support an intramolecular transformation mechanism based on a rewinding of hellcal segments of different lengths having opposite senses of spiralization. Such a mechanism is in agreement with the annealing time dependence of a particular order parameter and is sensitive to the temperature and not to the annealing time once the saturation order value is reached. This saturation phenomenon occurs very quickly at the higher temperatures.

    Description: We report the detection and spectrum of the distant (z = 1.839), highly polarized quasar PKS 1502+106 in the X-ray band based on data collected over the period 1990-1994 using ROSAT and ASCA. We find the source to exhibit intensity variations of a factor approximately greater than 2 at 1 keV on timescales of years, small compared to the variability observed historically in the radio, millimeter, and optical bands. The (energy) spectral index is found in the range 0.4 approximately less than alpha(sub x) approximately less than 0.8 (at 90% confidence). Its multiwaveband spectral index is broadly consistent with other highly polarized quasars (HPQs). From the application of an inhomogeneous synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) jet we find that a model similar to that proposed for 3C 279 is consistent with the multiwaveband spectrum. We suggest that a change in the energy injection and/or transport mechanisms within such a jet could easily result in PKS 1502+106 being detectable at gamma-ray energies.

    Description: We investigate the hypothesis that the parsec-scale jets observed in extragalactic objects consist of an electron-positron pair plasma outflowing from the compact, X-ray emitting region of the source. Due to annihilation in the innermost regions, there is an upper limit on the number of electron-positron pairs that can reach the parsec-scale jet. On the other hand, there is a lower limit on the density of particles in the jet: their density must be at least equal to that needed to emit the synchrotron radiation we observe. We derive the latter limit by assuming a power-law electron distribution, with a low-energy cut-off. By comparing these two limits, we find that the constituents of parsec-scale jets may be electron-positron pairs produced in the innermost regions only if their minimum energy is greater than approximately 50 MeV. Remarkably, the same limit on the minimum particle energy is found in the case of jets consisting of electrons and protons in order that Faraday depolarization is avoided.
