Notes: Summary Bovine placental lactogen activity is shown by immunogold electron microscopy to be restricted to (a) the granules and the Golgi body from which they form in the bovine fetal trophectodermal binucleate cell, and (b) granules of similar size and staining reaction in trinucleate “giant” cells found in the maternal uterine epithelium throughout pregnancy. These results support the hypothesis that a fetal binucleate cell forms a maternal giant cell by migration to and fusion with a uterine epithelial cell.

Description: Current knowledge of photospheric velocity fields is summarized. A model of the solar atmosphere is described along with the methods used in solar velocity field observations. The inferences drawn from integrated Sun observations, the velocity fields of the quiet Sun, sunspots, and other magnetic structures are discussed.

Description: High resolution, high S/N-ratio line profiles of the BY Draconis-type flare star EQ Vir obtained with the MMT are presently subjected to a novel Zeeman analysis procedure which includes radiative transfer effects and compensation for blends. A mean field of 2500 + or - 300 G covering 80 + or 15 percent of EQ Vir is determined. This constitutes the first positive detection of a magnetic field in a BY Draconis-type flare star, confirming that magnetic fields are present on these stars. The value of 2500 G obtained for the photospheric field strength is similar to the value derived by assuming equipartition of magnetic and thermal energy densities in the photosphere and scaling from the solar network fields, suggesting that equipartition may determine the mean field strength in the nonspotted portion of the flare star photosphere.

Description: This ad hoc panel met in February 1977 to consider the needs of solar physics for space missions after the scheduled flight of Solar Maximum Mission in 1979. We were concerned only with scientific needs and opportunities. Neither budgetary implications nor payload feasibility were considered. This report on the panel deliberations therefore makes suggestions only. We hope it will be a useful input to the more extensive and careful analysis of the appropriate committees, such as the Solar Physics Working Group. We have made no attempt to prioritize our proposed mission. The following possible missions are describes briefly: A Solar Terrestrial Environment Mission; two versions of a Stereo Mission; a Large Scale Solar Structure Mission; a Solar Atmosphere Mission; a Solar Particle Acceleration Mission; and a Solar Pinhole Mission. We also append a brief account of the proposed Solar Probe Mission.
