Notizen: Abstract We present data from a 16×32 array of unstressed Ge:Gadetectors, showing the long time constant responses and hook effectcharacteristic of these devices. This array is half the size of the70 μm imaging array planned for MIPS, the Multiband ImagingPhotometer for SIRTF. We present simulations of the FIR (farinfrared) sky as viewed by a MIPS array, including realistic noiseeffects and extraction of point sources with a standard photometrypackage, showing that the photometric goals of MIPS are attainablewith the current array performance and using standard analysistechniques. Previous calculations by Heim et al. (1998) haddetermined that MIPS would achieve 5-σ detections of ≤1 mJy at 70 μm in 2000 s; the simulations presented hereobtain results consistent with those calculations.

Beschreibung: Electrical and optical performance data are presented for a prototype 100 mK spider-web bolometer operating under very low photon backgrounds. These data are compared with the bolometer theory and are used to estimate the expected sensitivity of such a detector used for low background space astronomy. The results demonstrate that the sensitivity and speed of response requirements of the bolometer instruments proposed for these missions can be met by 100 mK spider-web bolometers using neutron transmutation doped germanium as the temperature sensitive element.

Beschreibung: The development of stressed Ge:Ga detector arrays for far-infrared astronomy from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO) is discussed. Researchers successfully constructed and used a three channel detector array on five flights from the KAO, and have conducted laboratory tests of a two-dimensional, 25 elements (5x5) detector array. Each element of the three element array performs as well as the researchers' best single channel detector, as do the tested elements of the 25 channel system. Some of the exciting new science possible with far-infrared detector arrays is also discussed.

Beschreibung: Sensitive far infrared and millimeter wave bolometers fabricated from a freestanding membrane of low stress silicon nitride are reported. The absorber, consisting of a metallized silicon nitride micromesh thermally isolated by radial legs of silicon nitride, is placed in an integrating cavity to efficiently couple to single mode or multiple mode infrared radiation. This structure provides low heat capacity, low thermal conduction and minimal cross section to energetic particles. A neutron transmutation doped Ge thermister is bump bonded to the center of the device and read out with evaporated Cr-Au leads. The limiting performance of the micromesh absorber is discussed and the recent results obtained from a 300 mK cold stage are summarized.

Beschreibung: Recent developments in bolometric detector systems for millimeter and submillimeter wave space astronomy are described. Current technologies meet all the requirements for the high frequency instrument onboard the cosmic background radiation anisotropy satellite/satellite for the measurement of background anisotropies (COBRAS/SAMBA) platform. It is considered that the technologies that are currently being developed will significantly reduce the effective time constant and/or the cooling requirements of bolometric detectors. These technologies lend themselves to the fabrication of the large format arrays required for the Far Infrared and Submillimeter Space Telescope (FIRST). The scientific goals and detector requirements of the COBRAS/SAMBA platform that will use infrared bolometers are reviewed and the baseline detector system is described, including the feed optics, the infrared filters, the cold amplifiers and the warm readout electronics.

Beschreibung: An ac bridge readout system has been developed that greatly improves the low-frequency stability of bolometric detectors. The readout can be implemented with a simple circuit appropriate for use in space applications. A matched pair of detectors was used in the readout to achieve system noise within a factor of two of the fundamental noise limit of the detectors at frequencies as low as 10 mHz. The low-frequency stability of the readout system allows slower, more sensitive detectors to be used in many applications, and it facilitates observing strategies that are well suited to spaceborne observations.

Beschreibung: Recent advances in the development of neutron transmutation doped (NTD) semiconductor thermistors fabricated from natural and controlled isotopic composition germanium are reported. The near ideal doping uniformity that can be achieved with the NTD process, the device simplicity of NTD Ge thermistors and the high performance of cooled junction field effect transistor preamplifiers led to the widespread acceptance of these thermal sensors in ground-based, airborne and spaceborne radio telescopes. These features made possible the development of efficient bolometer arrays.

Beschreibung: Some Ge:Ga and Ge:Sb photoconductor materials and detectors that are currently under development are reported. The best Ge:Ga devices exhibit dark currents of lower than 200 electrons/s, with a concurrent responsivity of 2 A/W and a detective quantum efficiency (DQE) of 5 percent. For higher backgrounds, an operating temperature of 3 K can be used. This increases the DQE to 7 percent and the responsivity to 4.5 A/W. Investigations were initiated into n-type Ge:Sb as an alternative photoconductive material. Two crystals of Ge:Sb were grown and a number of test detectors were fabricated and evaluated. At 2 K, the best device produced dark currents of less than 100 electrons/s with concurrent responsivity of 1 A/W and DQE of 4 percent, and at 3 K, produced currents of 10(exp 5) electrons/s with a DQE of 7 percent and a responsivity of 4 A/W. Using p-type Ge:Ga crystals, two dimensional monolithic photoconductor arrays are being constructed. Future work will focus on measuring pixel-to-pixel homogeneity, cross talk issues, overall sensitivity and suitability for photometric instruments.
