    Notes: We report on the results of calculations of the electronic structure of α-quartz that were made using the first principles, factorized linear combination of atomic orbitals method. Results were obtained for the primitive 9-atom, and orthorhombic 18- and 72-atom unit cells. Application of this method to the calculation of the electronic structure of the neutral oxygen vacancy in α-quartz is discussed and results obtained using a 72-atom unit cell are given. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: We report on the results of electronic band structure calculations of bulk ZnSe, bulk ZnS, and the (ZnSe)1(ZnS)1 strained-layer superlattice (SLS) using the ab initio factorized linear combination of atomic orbitals method. The bulk calculations were done using the standard primitive nonrectangular 2-atom zincblende unit cell, while the SLS calculation was done using a primitive tetragonal 4-atom unit cell modeled from the CuAu I structure. The analytic fit to the SLS crystalline potential was determined by using the nonlinear coefficients from the bulk fits. The CPU time saved by factorizing the energy matrix integrals and using a rectangular unit cell is discussed. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: We report on the progress in a study to determine the structure of radiation-induced Mn defect complexes in CaF2. The purpose of this study is to correlate the calculated transition energies with those measured experimentally and to determine what effect the inclusion of the external lattice field has on these transitions. Unrestricted open shell Hartree-Fock Self-Consistent Field (UHF) calculations were performed on the unperturbed F-center [Ca4F6Vac]1+ S = 1/2, the unperturbed Mn2+ center [MnF8]6- S = 5/2, S = 3/2 and the Mn2+ perturbed F-center [Mn2Ca2F6Vac]1+ S = 11/2, S = 9/2 defect clusters. A method by which the effects of the external lattice field may be incorporated in the SCF procedure is developed and used in these calculations. Several transition energies are calculated and Mulliken population results for these clusters are presented and discussed. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Description: Introduction: Recently released, high-resolution images from the Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) and the Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) reveal a myriad of intriguing landforms banked along the northern edge of Terby Crater located on the northern rim of Hellas (approx.28degS, 287degW). Landforms within this crater include north-trending troughs and ridges, a remarkable 2.5 km-thick sequence of exposed layers, mantled ramps that extend across and between layered sequences, fan-like structures, sinuous channels, collapse pits, a massive landslide and viscous flow features. The suite of diverse landforms in Terby and its immediate surroundings attest to a diversity of rock types and geologic processes, making this locality ideal for studying landform-climate relationships on Mars. In order to decipher the complicated geologic history of Terby Crater and the nature of the layered deposits, a generalized geomorphic map was created and the slope of the layered deposits was examined.

In particular, the next decade of exploration (2009-2020) will utilize rovers and other mobile surface platforms to conduct a wide variety of tasks, including in the search for water and life, characterization of terrain and its geology, and conduct precursor measurements prepare for future human exploration.

    Description: The prospect for a human outpost or permanent lunar base conducting exploration science on the Moon has been discussed in a number of different venues [1-4]. Of all the technological difficulties that confront observatory science on the Moon, dust mitigation remains a serious issue that is either discussed candidly or is oversimplified. In view of the fact that fundamental physics and astronomy research continues to be proposed for a lunar base, the problem of lunar dust must be confronted. In particular, the recent suggestion to place a 20-meter liquid mirror telescope (LMT) on the Moon because "the Moon and liquid mirrors were made for each other" [5-6] shows that the technical readiness level for any new vision of returning to the Moon with such grand-scale ideas is immature. Dust mitigation needs to be addressed, and we present a conceptual strategy for providing a clean area for observational science on a return-to-flight basis using existing technology rather than an evolutionary one that remains undeveloped. Under certain assumptions and caveats, we believe it addresses the problem.

    Description: New 3.5-cm radio and 69-micron far-infrared maps of M17, both made with an angular resolution of about 1.5 arcmin, are presented. Each map has three distinct maxima. Two of the maxima on the far-IR map agree in position with the corresponding maxima on the radio map. However, the positions of the brightest peak in the radio and far-infrared maps, located in the SW part of M17, differ by 4.6 + or - 2.2 s in right ascension and +44 + or - 20 sec in declination, with the far-infrared peak lying between the radio peak and the dense molecular cloud southwest of the H II region. It is believed that the positional offset of the radio and far-infrared peak is physically significant. The origin of the far-infrared radiation appears to be thermal emission from dust at the interface of the ionized gas and molecular cloud. This interface region is probably heated by radiation from the H II region.

    Description: The mission analysis program for solar electric propulsion (MAPSEP) is comprised of the basic modes: TOPSEP (trajectory generation), GODSEP (linear error analysis), and SIMSEP (simulation). The program is designed to analyze any low thrust mission with respect to trajectory performance, guidance and navigation, and to provide system related requirements for the purpose of vehicle design. The MAPSEP organization is described along with all models and algorithms. Topics discussed include: trajectory and error covariance propagation methods, orbit determination processes, thrust modeling, and trajectory correction (guidance) schemes.
