    Description: Recommendations for a 1979 Mariner Jupiter-Uranus mission are discussed with the possibility of launching the first outer planet atmospheric entry probe. Measurement categories considered for the mission include conducting imaging experiments, observations in both the IR and UV spectral range, experiments associated with magnetic fields, plasma, charged particles, and S- and X-band occultation measurements.

    Description: The paper reviews the guidance and automatic control techniques used in previous U.S. and Soviet lunar and planetary exploration spacecraft, and examines the objectives and requirements of potential future interplanetary missions from the viewpoint of their further demands on automatic control technology. These missions include the Venus orbital imaging radar mission, the Pioneer Mars penetrator mission, the Mars surface sample return mission, Pioneer Saturn/Uranus/Titan probe missions, the Mariner Jupiter orbiter with daughter satellite, and comet and asteroid missions.

    Description: This paper presents a mission strategy for exploring the outer planets in the 1980s. The strategy is based on the anticipated findings of the 1977 Voyager Jupiter/Saturn Mission, and the 1982 Jupiter Orbiter Probe (JOP) Mission, recently approved as a new project start, beginning in October 1977. The JOP Mission then becomes a principal element in the strategy presented here. Characteristics (launch energy, trajectory parameters, etc.) of other mission opportunities to the outer planets in the 1980s are developed and presented. The need for and benefits from advanced propulsion systems, which can enable the more difficult missions to the outer planets, also are cited. The overall mission strategy, including a description of the options, is evolved in consideration of scientific rationale and return, and technical and programmatic coupling factors.

    Description: An overview of possibilities being explored by NASA for effective planetary exploration at low cost is presented. The Solar System Exploration Committee (SSEC) has been examining this issue, with particular attention given to the areas of observing scientific objectives using derivative designs and hardware, and limiting modifications. The Venus Radar Mapper has been endorsed by the SSEC in terms of using existing space hardware, and has proven to be cost effective. In addition, hardware developed for Galileo missions must be used. Finally, the development of a spacecraft design which can be cost-effectively reconfigured from mission to mission is underway with the Mariner Mark II Concept. It is anticipated that low cost planetary exploration methods will be the focus of study at the SSEC.

    Description: Plans for the 1981 Jupiter Orbiter Probe (JOP) mission are presented in some detail. The need for a Jupiter entry probe, remote sensing of the planet, and an orbiter, in addition to flybys, is made clear. Launch hardware, using the Space Shuttle flight system and Interim Upper Stage, is described, along with scientific tasks laid out for the entry probe and the orbiter. Combined analysis of the Jovian magnetosphere and other orbiter missions calls for a two-part orbiter with one part spun and the other de-spun. Related design problems and solutions are described and diagrammed. Jovian moon flybys and orbiter path adjustments by subsequent earth-launched flybys are discussed. The importance of Jupiter data for solar system evolution and possible analysis of early stages of stellar evolution or of a binary system are also treated.

    Description: A review is conducted of the exploration of the solar system carried out with the aid of various types of spacecraft during the past two decades, taking into account also space missions planned for thy next few years. A wealth of information has been obtained regarding the planets and their satellites. However, there remain many important questions concerning the solar system, and a continuation of space exploration for the solution of these questions appears highly desirable, particularly when the comparatively little cost of these missions is taken into account. However, major fiscal limitations within the U.S. economy have led to pressure to postpone any new solar system exploration projects unless there can be major reductions in their cost. A special committee has been studying the options for future low-cost solar system exploration missions, giving attention also to some options for international implementation. Various aspects of joint space projects are examined.
