Notes: Semicrystalline LaRC-TPI is known to be capable of recrystallizing to higher melting crystalline forms upon initial melting. The behavior of these different crystalline forms has not been studied before. The present study uses techniques of differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffractometry to investigate thes crystalline structural changes during recrystallization of this material. Semicrystalline LaRC-TPIs synthesized from three different laboratories are included in this work.

Notes: Geveral new polyimides were prepared from the reaction of four aromatic dianhydrides with four new diamines containing carbonyl and ether connecting groups between the aromatic rings. The diamines were prepared from the reaction of 4-aminophenol with activated aromatic difluoro compounds in the presence of potassium carbonate. Several of these polyimides were shown to be semicrystalline as evidenced by wide angle x-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. Glass transition temperatures ranged between 192 and 247°C and crystalline melt temperatures were observed between 350 and 442°C. The polyimide from the reaction of 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenonetetracarboxylic acid dianhydride and 1,3-bis(4-aminophenoxy-4′-benzoyl)benzene provided a semicrystalline solvent resistant transparent film with high tensile properties and compression molded compact tension specimens with high fracture toughness.

Notes: The copolyether-polyester system resulting from the anionic graft polymerization of pivalolactone onto poly(2,6-dimethylphenylene oxide) has been formulated with differing graft densities and graft segment lengths. Wide angle x-ray scattering studies on these materials indicated an increased crystalline order with increased PVL segments/graft for similarly annealed specimens and a decrease in such order with increasing carboxylation.

Notes: An experimental study of the bulk-free radical copolymerization of styrene (STY)/ethyl acrylate (EA) initiated by 2,2′-azobisisobutyronitrile was conducted. Reactivity ratios were evaluated using both nonlinear least-squares (NLLS) and error-in-variables model (EVM) techniques. A thorough study of the kinetics over the full conversion range was subsequently carried out at a variety of feed compositions, initiator concentrations, and temperatures, with and without added chain transfer agent (CTA). © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Wide-angle x-ray scattering from a polyetheretherketone/carbonaceous fiber composite has been resolved using a curve-fit procedure. This resolution yielded under curve areas for crystalline, amorphous, and fiber scatter which could be used as the basis for an estimation of crystallinity.

Notes: Experimental studies of polymer melt flow in the filling and post-filling stages of the injection molding process were performed using the sequential injection of transparent and colored polystyrene resin. Effects of fountain flow in the filling stage, geometrical factors caused by edges and corners, as well as flow through contractions and expansions, were identified. Significant polymer melt flow which increases with increased packing pressure was observed in the post-filling process. The melt flow is more concentrated around the gate area than away from the gate. It was also found that the polymer melt flows across the gap center, resulting in partial annihilation of the weld line. Simulations based on the control-volume/finite-element method employed within each gapwise layer combined with the dual-filling-parameter technique were developed to trace the advancements in melt fronts for both skin and core materials. Numerical simulations show reasonable consistency with experimental results in both skin and core material distribution. If the edge effect is taken into account using a shape factor as a geometrical correction, the simulation accuracy is further improved.
