Description: JT8D and JT9D component performance improvement concepts which have a high probability of incorporation into production engines were identified and ranked. An evaluation method based on airline payback period was developed for the purpose of identifying the most promising concepts. The method used available test data and analytical models along with conceptual/preliminary designs to predict the performance improvements, weight, installation characteristics, cost for new production and retrofit, maintenance cost, and qualitative characteristics of candidate concepts. These results were used to arrive at the concept payback period, which is the time required for an airline to recover the investment cost of concept implementation.

Description: Power spectra of geomagnetic-field variations measured at synchronous equatorial altitude (geomagnetic shell parameter about 6.6) in the magnetosphere are used to calculate the time dependence of the radial diffusion coefficient for particles in the radiation belts. The diffusion coefficients calculated are mainly applicable for relativistic electrons. The magnitudes of the derived diffusion coefficients using data only from local day observations are consistent with those reported from analyses of most particle observations and thus are slightly larger than those derived from magnetic sudden commencements. They are consistent with the diffusion coefficients calculated from power spectra of ground-based geomagnetic data measured near L = 4.

Description: ULF power spectra of geomagnetic variations at synchronous orbit are calculated for August 1974 on the basis of data from the UCLA triaxial fluxgate magnetometer on ATS 6. Emphasis is placed on the examination of the background spectrum, and therefore the diurnal differences and all relationships in magnetic activity as reflected in the Kp index. The average power spectrum at synchronous orbit is also compared with reported observations from the interplanetary medium, the magnetosheath, the region inside the magnetosphere near the magnetopause, and the ground.
