    Notes: Numerical simulation of forming processes is studied using the Navier-Stokes equations and the energy equation governing viscous, incompressible fluids. A review of various important aspects of forming processes is also reviewed for completeness. A penalty finite element model of the equations is developed. The finite element model is used to study the effectiveness of various constitutive models developed for metal forming and polymer processing. The element-by-element (EBE) data structure with efficient iterative solution methods is used to solve the large systems of equations that arise in the analysis of complex 3-D problems. Numerical results for problems representative of various forming processes (e.g. extrusion and solidification) are presented.

    Notes: The ability of two types of Conjugate Gradient like iterative solvers (GMRES and ORTHOMIN) to resolve large-scale phenomena as a function of mesh density and convergence tolerance limit is investigated. The flow of an incompressible fluid inside a sudden expansion channel is analysed using three meshes of 400, 1600 and 6400 bilinear elements. The iterative solvers utilize the element-by-element data structure of the finite element technique to store and maintain the data at the element level. Both the mesh density and the penalty parameter are found to influence the choice of the convergence tolerance limit needed to obtain accurate results. An empirical relationship between the element size, the penalty parameter, and the convergence tolerance is presented. This relationship can be used to predict the proper choice of the convergence tolerance for a given penalty parameter and element size.

    Notes: The standard bilinear displacement field of the plane linear elastic rectangular 4-node quadrilateral element is enhanced by incompatible modes. The resulting gradient operators are separated into constant and linear parts corresponding to underintegration and stabilization of the element stiffness matrix. Minimization of potential energy is used to generate exact analytical expressions for the hourglass stabilization of the rectangle. The stabilized element is shown to coincide with the element obtained by the mixed assumed strain method.

    Notes: A plate bending element based on the generalized laminate plate theory (GLPT) developed by the senior author is described and its accuracy is investigated by comparison with the exact solutions of the generalized plate theory and the 3D-elasticity theory. The element accounts for transverse shear deformation and layer-wise description of the inplane displacements of the laminate. The element has improved description of the inplane as well as the transverse deformation response. A method for the computation of interlaminar (transverse) stresses is also presented.

    Notes: Using the incremental equations of motion of a continuous medium and the total Lagrangian description, three different elements, i.e. degenerated shell element, 3-D continuum element and solid-shell transition element, are developed for the geometrically non-linear analysis of laminated composite structures.     Notes: Finite element models of the continuum-based theories and two-dimensional plate/shell theories used in the analysis of composite laminates are reviewed. The classical and shear deformation theories up to the third-order are presented in a single theory. Results of linear and non-linear bending, natural vibration and stability of composite laminates are presented for various boundary conditions and lamination schemes. Computational modelling issues related to composite laminates, such as locking, symmetry considerations, boundary conditions, and geometric non-linearity effects on displacements, buckling loads and frequencies are discussed. It is shown that the use of quarter plate models can introduce significant errors into the solution of certain laminates, the non-linear effects are important even at small ratio of the transverse deflection to the thickness of antisymmetric laminates with pinned edges, and that the conventional eigenvalue approach for the determination of buckling loads of composite laminates can be overly conservative.

    Notes: The first- and second-order, small strain and moderate rotation, theories of anisotropic laminated plates are developed and numerically evaluated. Beginning with an assumed displacement field and introducing various order-of-magnitude assumptions, the governing equilibrium equations of laminated plates are derived from the principle of virtual displacements. The finite-element formulation for the second-order moderate rotation theory is developed, and numerical results are presented to evaluate the new plate theories in comparison with the von Kàrmàn plate theory with shear deformation. For comparison purposes, the 2-D elasticity theory with full non-linearity is also analysed using the finite element method. It is found that the second-order theory with moderate rotations is closest to the 2-D finite elasticity theory.

    Notes: Plate finite elements based on the generalized third-order theory of Reddy and the first-order shear deformation theory are analysed and compared on the basis of thick and thin plate modelling behaviour, distortion sensitivity, overall accuracy, reliability and efficiency. In particular, several four-noded Reddy-type elements and the nine-noded Lagrangian and heterosis (Mindlin-type) plate elements are analysed to assess their behaviour in bending, vibration and stability of isotropic and laminated composite plates. A four-noded Reddy-type element is identified which is free of all spurious stiffness and zero energy modes, computationally efficient, and suitable for use in any general-purpose finite element program.

    Notes: Analytical solutions for displacements and stresses in composite laminates are developed using the laminate plate theory of Reddy. The theory accounts for a desired degree of approximation of the displacements through the laminate thickness, allowing for piecewise approximation of the inplane deformation through individual laminae. The solutions are compared with the 3-D elasticity solutions for the simply supported case and excellent agreement is found. Analytical solutions are also presented for other boundary conditions. The results indicate that the generalized shear deformation plate theory predicts accurate stress distributions in thick composite laminates.
