    Description: Translational state estimation in terminal area operations, using a set of commonly available position, air data, nd acceleration sensors, is described. Kalman filtering is applied to obtain maximum estimation occuracy from the sensors but feasibility in real-time computations requires a variety of approximations and devices aimed at minimizing the required computation time with only negligible loss of accuracy. Accuracy behavior throughout the terminal area, its relation to sensor accuracy, its effect on trajectory tracking errors and control activity in an automatic flight control system, and its adequacy in terms of existing criteria for various terminal area operations are examined. The principal investigative tool is a simulation of the system. Previously announced in STAR as N83-29193

    Description: The sequence of events which led the researchers at Ames Research Center to the early discovery of the Kalman filter shortly after its introduction into the literature is recounted. The scientific breakthroughs and reformulations that were necessary to transform Kalman's work into a useful tool for a specific aerospace application are described. The resulting extended Kalman filter, as it is now known, is often still referred to simply as the Kalman filter. As the filter's use gained in popularity in the scientific community, the problems of implementation on small spaceborne and airborne computers led to a square-root formulation of the filter to overcome numerical difficulties associated with computer word length. The work that led to this new formulation is also discussed, including the first airborne computer implementation and flight test. Since then the applications of the extended and square-root formulations of the Kalman filter have grown rapidly throughout the aerospace industry.

    Description: The formulation and implementation of navigation systems used for research investigations in the V/STOLAND avionics system are described. The navigation systems prove position and velocity in a cartestian reference frame aligned with the runway. They use filtering techniques to combine the raw position data from navaids (e.g., TACAN, MLS) with data from onboard inertial sensors. The filtering techniques which use both complementary and Kalman filters, are described. The software for the navigation systems is also described.

    Description: Inertial navigation equations are developed which use area navigation (RNAV) waypoints and runway references as coodinate centers. The formulation is designed for aided inertial navigation systems and gives a high numerical accuracy through all phases of flight. A new formulation of the error equations for inertial navigation systems is also presented. This new formulation reduces numerical calculations in the use of Kalman filters for aided inertial navigation systems.

    Description: A preliminary study has been made of the navigation performance which might be achieved for the high cross-range space shuttle orbiter during final approach and landing by using an optimally augmented inertial navigation system. Computed navigation accuracies are presented for an on-board inertial navigation system augmented (by means of an optimal filter algorithm) with data from two different ground navigation aids; a precision ranging system and a microwave scanning beam landing guidance system. These results show that augmentation with either type of ground navigation aid is capable of providing a navigation performance at touchdown which should be adequate for the space shuttle. In addition, adequate navigation performance for space shuttle landing is obtainable from the precision ranging system even with a complete dropout of precision range measurements as much as 100 seconds before touchdown.

    Description: A simulation program is described for the B-737 aircraft in landing approach, a touchdown, rollout and turnoff for normal and CAT III weather conditions. Preliminary results indicate that microwave landing systems can be used in place of instrument landing systems landing aids and that a single magnetic cable can be used for automated rollout and turnoff. Recommendations are made for further refinement of the model and additional testing to finalize a set of guidance laws for rollout and turnoff.

    Description: A Kalman filter for aircraft terminal area and landing navigation was implemented and flight tested in the NASA Ames STOLAND avionics computer onboard a Twin Otter aircraft. This system combines navaid measurements from TACAN, MODILS, air data, radar altimeter sensors along with measurements from strap-down accelerometer and attitude angle sensors. The flight test results demonstrate that the Kalman filter provides improved estimates of the aircraft position and velocity as compared with estimates from the more standard complementary filter. The onboard computer implementation requirements to achieve this improved performance are discussed.

    Description: A description of the simulation program used to study the landing approach, rollout and turnoff of the B737-100 aircraft utilizing MLS and a buried magnetic leader cable as navigation aids is presented. Simulation results are given and show the concept to be both feasible and practical for commercial type aircraft terminal area control.
