    Notes: Abstract We have isolated the Penicillium chrysogenum nre gene which is homologous to the major nitrogen regulatory genes areA from Aspergillus nidulans and nit-2 from Neurospora crassa. Overall, nre shows 60% identity to areA and 30% identity to nit-2 at the amino-acid level. The gene encodes a protein of 835 amino-acid residues and contains a single Cys2/Cys2-type zinc finger with an adjacent basic region and a putative acidic activation region. In the DNA-binding domain, 98% of the amino-acid residues are identical in nre, areA and nit-2. The nre gene has been shown to be functional in N. crassa by heterologous complementation of a nit-2 mutant. Growth tests indicated that transformants could utilize nitrate, amino-acids, purines and amides as sole nitrogen sources. Nitrate reductase activity assays performed with transformants demonstrated that nitrogen control was completely normal. Complementation of N. crassa nit-2 mutants with 5′-deletion clones of nre suggests the possible presence of an internal promoter within the coding region. Northern analysis and ribonuclease protection assays of total cellular RNA indicated that nre encodes a 3.2-kb transcript which is reduced in content under conditions of nitrogen repression.

    Notes: Deuterium-labeled polystyrene modified by random distributions of the comonomer p-(1,1,1,3,3,3-hexaflouro-2-hydroxyisopropyl)-α-methyl-styrene [DPS(OH)] has been blended with poly(butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) and studied with small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Miscibility is induced via hydrogen bonding between the DPS(OH) hydroxyl group and PBMA carbonyl groups. The data suggest that the nature of the miscible-phase structure in these blends differs from that of the usual homopolymer blends at small scattering angles, which we attribute to the short-range site specific nature of the hydrogen bond interaction. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Description: The topic of the 1988-1989 NASA/USRA Advanced Design Project at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, was the development of an air transportation system to meet the needs of the California Corridor for the year 2010. As aircraft design is taught by two instructors having different philosophies about the teaching process, the two classes took different approaches to address the problem. The first part of this summary (California Air Transit System) represents the work done by the students of Professor A. E. Andreoli, who followed a systems approach, emphasizing the determination of the proper mission. The second part of the summary (Four Aircraft to Service the California Corridor) contains the four aircraft designed by Dr. D. R. Sandlin's class based on specifications determined from work done in previous years.
