Notes: We report flow birefringence observations of polyethylene oxide solutions in a four roll mill where the flow field in the central region of the mill approximates well to that of pure shearing flow. When flow birefringence is observed it is seen to be highly localized within a region close to the “outgoing” asymptotic plane of flow. The phenomenon can be explained in terms of the flow birefringence corresponding to high extension of some polymer chains where the localization is caused by the chains requiring sufficient time in the flow field to become extended. This explanation has important consequences in all “persistently extensional flows” and can explain the origin of previously published results of localized flow birefringence observed for polyethylene solutions in axial compression and axial extensional flows.

Description: This paper will discuss the development of Electric Propulsion technology in the U.S. from the 1960's to the present. It will summarize the various activities related to arcjets, resistojets, pulsed plasma thrustors, magneto-plasma-dynamic thrustors, ion engines, and more recently the evaluation of Hall effect thrustors of the SPT or Anode Layer type developed in Russia. Also, demonstration test flight and actual mission applications will be summarized. Finally, the future application of electric propulsion to near-term commercial communications satellites and planetary missions will be projected. This history is rich in diversity, and has involved a succession of types of thrustors, propellants, and electric power sources. With the recent use of arcjets on commercial communication satellites and the flight tests of ion engines for this application, it appears that electric propulsion is finally on the verge of wide spread application.

Description: New methodologies were utilized to study the influence of the hypothalamus on the cardiovascular system. The regulation of myocardial activity was investigated in monkeys with hypothalamic lesions that eliminate cardiovascular responses. Observations showed that a specific part of the hypothalamus regulates changes in myocardial contractility that accompanies emotion. Studies of the hypothalamus control of renal blood flow showed the powerful potential control of this organ over renal circulation.
