    Description: The LOADS program L218, a digital computer program that calculates dynamic load coefficient matrices utilizing the force summation method, is described. The load equations are derived for a flight vehicle in straight and level flight and excited by gusts and/or control motions. In addition, sensor equations are calculated for use with an active control system. The load coefficient matrices are calculated for the following types of loads: translational and rotational accelerations, velocities, and displacements; panel aerodynamic forces; net panel forces; shears and moments. Program usage and a brief description of the analysis used are presented. A description of the design and structure of the program to aid those who will maintain and/or modify the program in the future is included.

    Description: The strategy of the IPAD implementation plan presented, proposes a three phase development of the IPAD system and technical modules, and the transfer of this capability from the development environment to the aerospace vehicle design environment. The system and technical module capabilities for each phase of development are described. The system and technical module programming languages are recommended as well as the initial host computer system hardware and operating system. The cost of developing the IPAD technology is estimated. A schedule displaying the flowtime required for each development task is given. A PERT chart gives the developmental relationships of each of the tasks and an estimate of the operational cost of the IPAD system is offered.

    Description: IPAD was defined as a total system oriented to the product design process. This total system was designed to recognize the product design process, individuals and their design process tasks, and the computer-based IPAD System to aid product design. Principal elements of the IPAD System include the host computer and its interactive system software, new executive and data management software, and an open-ended IPAD library of technical programs to match the intended product design process. The basic goal of the IPAD total system is to increase the productivity of the product design organization. Increases in individual productivity were feasible through automation and computer support of routine information handling. Such proven automation can directly decrease cost and flowtime in the product design process.

    Description: The velocity and temperature distribution in an unsteady thermal boundary layer is analyzed by an approximate integral method. The case of a flat plate in a free stream having small harmonic velocity oscillations about a steady mean value is treated in detail. The resulting velocity profiles agree with the available experimental data. These profiles are used to predict the thermal convection when the plate and the stream are at constant but different temperature levels. The flow oscillations cause harmonic temperature oscillations plus a small steady feedback effect which reduces the mean heat transfer to the plate. The amount of decrease is represented by a single coefficient, which is presented graphically.

    Description: An equation of state and expressions for the isothermal compressibility, thermal expansion coefficient, heat capacity, and entropy of liquids have been derived from the free volume model partition function suggested by Turnbull. The simple definition of the free volume is used, and it is assumed that the specific volume is directly related to the cube of the intermolecular separation by a proportionality factor which is found to be a function of temperature and pressure as well as specific volume. When values of the proportionality factor are calculated from experimental data for real liquids, it is found to be approximately constant over ranges of temperature and pressure which correspond to the dense liquid phase. This result provides a single-parameter method for calculating dense liquid thermodynamic properties and is consistent with the fact that the free volume model is designed to describe liquids near the solidification point.

    Description: Results obtained during the development of a consistent aerodynamic theory for rotors in hovering flight are discussed. Methods of aerodynamic analysis were developed which are adequate for general design purposes until such time as more elaborate solutions become available, in particular solutions which include real fluids effects. Several problems were encountered in the course of this development, and many remain to be solved, however it is felt that a better understanding of the aerodynamic phenomena involved was obtained. Remaining uncertainties are discussed.
