    Description: Large-scale aircraft lavatory and cargo compartment fire tests are described. Tests were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of these compartments to contain fire and smoke. Two tests were conducted and are detailed. Test 1 involved a production Boeing 747 lavatory of the latest design installed in an enclosure outside the aircraft, to collect gases and expose animals to these gases. Results indicate that the interior of the lavatory was completely burned, evolving smoke and combustion products in the enclosure. Test 2 involved a simulated Douglas DC-10 cargo compartment retro-fitted with standard fiberglass liner. The fire caused excessive damage to the liner and burned through the ceiling in two areas. Test objectives, methods, materials, and results are presented and discussed.

    Description: This paper develops and analyses individual construction aspects of an efficient and accurate finite element algorithm for prediction of viscous and turbulent flow fields of impact in aerodynamics. The theoretical construction employs a Taylor weak statement (TWS) for coincident embedding of stability mechanisms within a classic Galerkin finite element formulation of semidiscrete approximation error orthogonalization. A wide variety of the stabilizing mechanisms of independently derived CFD algorithms are contained within the TWS theory. An implicit construction that meets the requirement of efficient convergence to steady state is developed. The theoretical asymptotic error estimates of the TWS finite element algorithm for supersonic and viscous boundary layer flows are verified. Application to a three-dimensional turbulent flow is cited.

    Description: Technology developed for the Circulation Control Wing high-lift system has been extended to augment lift by entraining and redirecting engine thrust. Ejecting a thin jet sheet tangentially over a small curved deflecting surface adjacent to the slipstream of a turbofan engine causes the slipstream to flow around that deflecting surface. The angle of deflection is controlled pneumatically by varying the momentum of the thin jet sheet. The downward momentum of the slipstream enhances wing lift. This concept of pneumatically deflecting the slipstream has been applied to an upper surface blowing high-lift system and to a thrust deflecting system. The capability of the pneumatic upper surface blowing system was demonstrated in a series of investigations using a wind tunnel model and the NASA Quiet Short-haul Research Aircraft (QSRA). Full-scale thrust deflections greater than 90 deg were achieved. This mechanically simple system can provide increased maneuverability, heavy lift or overload capability, or short takeoff and landing performance.

    Description: Use of surface pressures, heat-transfer rates, and flow-visualization photographs to define the flowfields for simulated infinite cylinders. Four cylindrical cross sections were studied in the experimental program, which was conducted at free-stream Mach numbers of 5 to 15, free-stream unit Reynolds numbers from 2 to 20 million per foot, and angles of attack from 30 to 90 deg. Although swept-cylinder theory provides a reasonable correlation of the measured laminar heat-transfer rates in the plane of symmetry, improved correlation with the measurements is obtained if the three-dimensional nature of the flow is taken into account. In cases where the boundary layer on the windward forebody was turbulent, the large velocity gradients near the chines produced relaminarization of the boundary layer prior to separation. The average heat-transfer-rate in the separated region, which is weakly dependent on the free-stream conditions, was found to be a linear function of the angle of attack. For a given flow condition the effect of the leeward geometry on heat transfer can be correlated by a single geometric parameter which is dependent on the location of separation.

    Description: Areas relating to the development and improvement of the single-fuselage, yawed-wing transonic transport concept were investigated. These included: (1) developing an alternate configuration with a simplified engine installation;(2) determining a structural design speed placard that would allow the engine-airframe match for optimum airplane performance; and (3) conducting an aeroelastic stability and control analysis of the yawed-wing configuration with a flexible wing. A two-engine, single-fuselage, yawed-wing configuration was developed that achieved the Mach 1.2 design mission at 5560 km (3000 nmi) and payload of 18,140 kg (40,000 lb) with a gross weight of 217,700 kg (480,000 lb). This airplane was slightly heavier than the aft-integrated four-engine configuration that had been developed in a previous study. A modified structural design speed placard, which was determined, resulted in a 6% to 8% reduction in the gross weight of the yawed-wing configurations. The dynamic stability characteristics of the single-fuselage yawed-wing configuration were found to be very dependent on the magnitude of the pitch/roll coupling, the static longitudinal stability, and the dihedral effect.

    Description: A nonlinear boundary value problem governing the subsonic flow in a single, extended, blade passage region of a high-deflection, two dimensional, oscillating cascade is derived. The blades are assumed to be undergoing identical harmonic motions of small amplitude with constant phase angle between the motion of adjacent blades. An asymptotic perturbation approach is used to determine the velocity potential. This formulation can be used in the numerical determination of unsteady potential and thus the unsteady aerodynamic force and moment under various combinations of cascade and flow parameters.

    Notes: From a study of the 13C-shift values of the MTPA esters of 3-substituted cyclohexanols of known absolute configuration an empirical rule has been developed to determine the absolute configuration of chiral cyclohexanols. The method is based on the Dale-Mosher model, which was originally developed for 1H-NMR spectra. The scope and limitations of this method are discussed. The enantiomeric purity of the alcohols can be determined simultaneously by integration of the signals in well-resolved diastereotopic carbon pairs.

    Notes: The stereoselectivity of carvedilol, a novel β-adrenoceptor antagonist and vasodilator with one asymmetric carbon atom, was examined at α1- and β1-adrenoceptors in vitro and in vivo. (-)-(S)-Carvedilol is a potent, competitive antagonist of the β1-adrenoceptor-mediated positive chronotropic response to isoproterenol in guinea pig atrium, with a dissociation constant (KB) of 0.4 nM. (+)-(R)-Carvedilol was more than 100-fold less potent than the (-)-S-enantiomer as an antagonist of β;1-andrenoceptors, having a KB of approximately 45 nM. Consistent with these findings (-)-(S)-carvedilol (0.1 mg/kg, i.v.) produced a 25-fold rightward shift in the β1-adrenoceptor-mediated positive chronotropic response to isoproterenol in pithed rats, whereas the (+)-R-enantiomer had no β1-adrenoceptor blocking activity in vivo at this dose. In contrast to the marked degree of stereoselectivity observed at βl1-adrenoceptors, both (-)-(S)- and (+)-(R)-carvedilol produced equal antagonism of the α1----adrenoceptor-mediated vasoconstrictor response to norepinephrine in rabbit aorta, with KB values of 14 and 16 nM, respectively. Furthermore, in the pithed rat, the α1-adrenoceptor-mediated pressor dose-response curve to cirazoline was shifted approximately 6-fold to the right by both the (+)-R- and (-)-S-enantiomers of carvedilol at a dose of 1 mg/kg, i.v. In anesthetized spontaneously hypertensive rats, (-)-(S)-carvedilol was 6-fold more potent as an antihypertensive than (+)-(R)-carvedilol. The vasodilator and acute antihypertensive activity of carvedilol results from α1-andrenoceptor blockade produced by both enantiomers, and the concomitant β1-adrenoceptor blockade produced by the (-)-S-enantiomer, which prevents reflex tachycardia that can offset the antihypertensive response, leading to greater overall antihypertensive potency of (-)-(S)-carvedilol relative to the (+)-R-enantiomer. These data also suggest that distinct regions of the carvedilol molecule are responsible for blocking α1- and β1-adrenoceptors, with β1-adrenoceptor blockade resulting from an area of the molecule containing the asymmetric carbon atom, specifically the carbazolyloxy propanolamine moiety, and α1-adrenoceptor blockade resulting from a part of the molecule that does not contain the asymmetric carbon atom, most likely the phenoxyethylamine moiety.

    Notes: The UV spectra of 3,4-diphenyl-1,2,5-thiadiazole 1,1-dioxide (I) and that of its thiadiazoline and thiadiazolidine derivatives were measured in several aprotic and protic solvents. Strong specific interactions of I with protic solvents are observed and the formation of stable carbinolamine type derivatives of I with methanol or ethanol is proposed. Spectroscopic data (UV, 1H and 13C NMR) and electrochemical evidence for their formation are given and a new thiadiazoline derivative of I (3-ethoxy-2-methyl-3,4-diphenyl-1,2,5-thiadiazoline 1,1-dioxide) was synthesized. The equilibrium constant for the reaction of I with ethanol is reported.

    Notes: The enantiomers of the aromatase inhibitors 3-(4-aminophenyl)-pyrrolidine-2,5-dione (WSP-3, II), its N-pentyl derivative (III), and the antifungal econazole (IV), all possessing a benzylic proton at the chiral centre, are rapidly racemised in vitro in phosphate buffer (0.01 M) at pH 7.4 and 23°C with t½ values of 7, 6, and 5 h respectively. In vivo studies in rats show that (+)-econazole is racemised after intraperitoneal injection with t½ = 1.24h. The enantiomers of the antifungal 1-[(benzofuran-2-yl)-4-chlorophenylmethyl] imidazole (V) were stable at pH 7.4, attributable to steric hindrance to carbanion formation in the racemisation step. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
