    Notes: A modified sealed-tube apparatus has been developed for the measurement of the critical temperatures of thermally unstable fluids. The apparatus has been used to measure the critical temperatures of the normal alkanes from n-octane to n-hexadecane. Since the higher alkanes (with more than 10 carbon atoms) decompose at temperatures well below their critical temperatures, a new method of analysis of the apparent critical temperature vs. time data has been developed. This method employs reaction kinetics based on an irreversible first-order reaction and is used to linearize the data and to perform an unambiguous extrapolation to the critical temperature of the undecomposed substance. The method is successful because the temperature history of the substance is recorded by computer, and ampoule contents are analyzed at the completion of the experiment. The critical temperatures of the n-alkanes reported in this paper have been compared with values found in previous studies.

    Notes: 1A single oral dose (50 mg) of quinidine significantly increased the debrisoquine metabolic ratio in six healthy volunteers. For four of the volunteers the metabolic ratio changed to that typical of the poor metaboliser (PM) phenotype.2The effect of quinidine in producing debrisoquine oxidation “poor metaboliser” phenocopies persisted for at least 3 days but had disappeared by 1 week.3The debrisoquine metabolic ratios for the same six subjects were not significantly altered by the oral administration of quinine (200 or 400 mg), the dia-stereoisomer of quinidine.4The plasma pharmacokinetic parameters of both nortriptyline and desipramine in healthy volunteers were all changed to those more typical of the debrisoquine PM phenotype following the concomitant administration of quinidine (50 mg).5It is concluded that quinidine, but not its diastereoisomer quinine, is a potent selective inhibitor of the in vivo oxidation of debrisoquine and can produce an artifactual PM phenocopy in persons who are phenotypically extensive metaboliser (EM) phenotype status. The clinical implications of this observation are discussed.

    Notes: This study reports the effects of Simplex bone cement powder (BC) on the proliferation and production of bone resorbing factors in vitro by human adherent monocytes/macrophages. Adherent peripheral blood cells were isolated from seven healthy individuals and exposed to a dispersion of BC powder (1 mg/mL), phytohemagglutinin (PHA, 40 μg/mL), or medium alone at different periods of cell incubation (days 0-2, 0-7, 5-7, or 10-12). Cell proliferation was quantified by incorporation of 3H-thymidine uptake. Culture supernatants were evaluated for levels of interleukin 1-like activity (IL-1) by murine thymocyte proliferation assay, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) by radioimmunoassay, lysosomal enzyme activity (N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase and β-glucuronidase) using fluorometry, and collagen and casein degrading activity using radioactive substrates. Human adherent peripheral blood cells showed a proliferative response to PHA that coincided with cell maturation; BC did not inhibit PHA-induced cell proliferation of either adherent or nonadherent blood cells, indicating the non-toxic nature of these particles at the concentrations tested. BC stimulated increased release of the lysosomal enzyme N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase; the levels of PGE2, IL-1, collagenase, and caseinase were unchanged. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Description: Closed-form equations for the lift, drag, and pitching moment coefficients of two dimensional airfoil sections in steady subsonic flow were obtained from published theoretical and experimental results. A turbulent boundary layer was assumed to exist on the airfoil surfaces. The effects of section angle of attack, Mach number, Reynolds number, and the specific airfoil type were considered. The equations were applicable through an angle of attack range of -180 deg to +180 deg; however, above about + or - 20 deg, the section characteristics were assumed to be functions only of angle of attack. A computer program is presented which evaluates the equations for a range of Mach numbers and angles of attack. Calculated results for the NACA 23012 airfoil section were compared with experimental data.
