    Description: Experimental studies have been conducted to assess Reynolds and Mach number effects on a supercritical multielement airfoil. The airfoil is representative of the stall-critical station of an advanced transport wing design. The experimental work was conducted as part of a cooperative program between the Douglas Aircraft Company and the NASA Langley Research Center to improve current knowledge of high-lift flows and to develop a validation data base with practical geometries/conditions for emerging computational methods. This article describes results obtained for both landing and takeoff multielement airfoils (four- and three-element configurations) for a variety of Mach/Reynolds number combinations up to flight conditions. Effects on maximum lift are considered for the landing configurations, and effects on both lift and drag are reported for the takeoff geometry. The present test results revealed considerable maximum lift effects on the three-element landing configuration for Reynolds number variations, and significant Mach number effects on the four-element airfoil.

    Description: The periodic moment method (PMM) solution for the scattering from two-dimensional lossy dielectric bodies is developed in this paper. The purpose is to design microwave wedge absorber for low reflectivity so that one can improve the performance of anechoic chamber measurements. With PMM, the reflection and transmission coefficients of periodically distributed bodies illuminated by a plane wave have been accurately calculated using a Cray Y-MP supercomputer. Through these studies, some wedge absorber configurations have been designed, fabricated, and then tested in the OSU/ESL compact range measurement facility. Two 8 in. commercial wedges, a curved wedge, and a four-layer wedge are studied in this paper. In all cases, good agreement between calculations and measurements has been obtained.

    Description: A wideband feed is proposed to support wideband radiation, and a design process is presented for a slotline bowtie hybrid (SBH) antenna based on specified pattern characteristics. Measured results are presented to demonstrate the pattern control of the antenna over its bandwidth. Impulse response plots are used to illustrate the pulse performance of this antenna type. For the antenna discussed here, the bandwidth was measured to be 6 to 1 and actually is expected to be larger.

    Description: A potential improvement on measuring atmospheric winds by using a coherent Doppler system has led to a need for detailed knowledge concerning the aerosol backscattering characteristics, especially at CO2 wavelengths. In order to meet this requirement, a plan of study has been developed to establish a global data base of atmospheric aerosol backscattering coefficients.

    Description: It is known that Great Lakes snow squall convection occurs in a variety of different modes depending on various factors such as air-water temperature contrast, boundary-layer wind shear, and geostrophic wind direction. An exceptional and often neglected source of data for mesoscale cloud studies is the ultrahigh resolution multispectral data produced by Landsat satellites. On October 19, 1972, a clearly defined spiral vortex was noted in a Landsat-1 image near the southern end of Lake Michigan during an exceptionally early cold air outbreak over a still very warm lake. In a numerical simulation using a three-dimensional Eulerian hydrostatic primitive equation mesoscale model with an initially uniform wind field, a definite analog to the observed vortex was generated. This suggests that intense surface heating can be a principal cause in the development of a low-level mesoscale vortex.

    Description: PROBE (Precision Reflector Orbital Build Experiment) is a Shuttle flight demonstration experiment designed to study extravehicular activity (EVA) assembly of precision segmented reflectors. PROBE will support missions being considered for NASA's Global Change Technology Initiative as well as other missions in astrophysics and spacecraft optical communications requiring large precision reflectors. Such reflectors are envisioned to consist of a low-mass backup truss to which the optical surface is attached. Because of their large size, these reflectors will be constructed on-orbit from smaller pieces which can be packaged in the launch vehicle. The technology to be developed with PROBE also has application for construction of solar dynamic collectors which are planned for the enhanced configuration of Space Station Freedom. Viewgraphs of PROBE are presented.
