Notizen: Abstract Flax (Linum ustitatissimum L.) is the source of natural fibers that provides biobased products for a variety of existing markets, but considerable processing and cleaning is required. Flax fibers, and bast fibers generally, are produced in the outer regions of the stem between bark and inner core tissues and require retting, which is the microbial separation of fiber from nonfiber tissues, as the first and most limiting stage of processing. Enzyme retting offers a method to overcome disadvantages of the current method, i.e., dew-retting, for high- and consistent-quality fibers with tailored properties for specific applications. Using chemical analyses, microscopy, and microspectroscopy, sites of carbohydrates, aromatics, and waxes plus cutins were identified in flax stems and their relationship to effective enzyme retting determined. Aromatics occur mostly in the inner, core tissues, with the fibers containing only small amounts located sporadically in cell corners of fiber bundles. Therefore, effective retting using enzymes to separate the aromatic-containing tissues from the fibers, but not to degrade aromatic compounds per se, is required. Waxes and cutin in the epidermal regions are effective barriers to enzyme penetration, and mechanical disruption facilitates enzyme penetration into the stems. Pectinases, with chelators to remove Ca++ and destabilize pectin molecules, remove matrix compounds holding fibers within the stem and have been used in effective formulations to ret flax stems.

Notizen: Abstract A simplified analogue to an Ion-Sensitive Field-Effect Transistor (ISFET) was tested in the presence of ions. The gate electrode in an ISFET is an aqueous solution, unlike in a Metal-Oxide Field-Effect Transistor (MOSFET) where the gate is a metal. A problem with the ISFET is that the insulating oxide between the silicon and the solution is slowly penetrated by various ions such as OH− or Na+ causing a change in the characteristics of the device. The application of thin alumina platelets and thin MoS2 films as a protective insulating layer, when deposited over the insulating silicon oxide, was tested against the penetration of ions. It is shown that there is a significant decrease in the ion penetration through to the silicon oxide layer, depending on the applied bias, when the oxide is covered with thin alumina or MoS2 layers. The effect of different ions and ion concentrations are presented. Suggestions for further improvement are made.

Notizen: Linear viscoelastic properties are found to be a sensitive measure of flow-induced structural changes in a block copolymer. Styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer (SBS) with 26% polystyrene (PS) forms a macrostructure in the quiescent state with grains of the order of 1-10 μm. Within each grain, phase separation gives rise to a regular two-phase microstructure with cylindrical PS domains with radius of the order of 200 Å. Large-amplitude oscillatory shear (γ = 4.5) at temperatures between 139 and 181°C was applied to after the grain structure with the objectives of removing the discontinuities at the grain boundaries and of aligning the domains into a continuous ultrastructure. The SBS behaved like a solid (tan δ 〈 1 at low ω) before and like a liquid (tan δ 〉 1) after shear modification. This change expressed itself in the removal of the long relaxation times from the linear viscoelastic spectrum; the intermediate and low relaxation times were not affected by the shear modification. The viscoelastic spectrum slowly recovered during annealing with recovery times of the order of the longest relaxation time of the quiescent structure. Birefringence studies showed that the SBS did not recover into its original grain structure but into a highly oriented domain structure. The discontinuities at the grain boundaries could not be removed completely.

Notizen: The benefits obtained from the addition of small quantities of chlorinated polyolefins to paving grade asphalt binders were investigated. A chlorinated polyethylene plastomer, Tyrin 2552, and a chlorinated olefinic elastomer, Tyrin CM0730, were added to asphalt binders at 3 and 5 wt % and subsequently reactively processed to facilitate compatibilization. The mixtures were analyzed for rheological performance relating to fatigue and rutting as well as low-temperature fracture performance. The addition of small quantities of these polymers to the asphalt binders resulted in significant improvements over conventional modifiers at both the high and low temperature extremes. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
