Notes: Abstract An ultra thin layer of germanium oxide with mono-atomic order thickness was prepared by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of germanium alkoxide on γ-alumina; the structure was analyzed by benzaldehyde-ammonia titration, extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and infrared spectroscopy. The mono-atomic layer showed Brønsted acidity, like the silica monolayer.

Notes: Abstract The magnetization of small nickel oxide clusters containing less than four nickel atoms (sample A) and about ten atoms (sample B), respectively, formed inside the supercages ofY-zeolite, was studied in the magnetic field below 50 kOe and in the temperature range of 2 to 600 K. The magnetic susceptibility of sample A obeyed a Curie-Weiss' (C-W) law above about 20 K with a C-W temperature of 12 K. A saturation behavior was observed in the magnetization versus field (M-H) curve below about 20 K. A hysteresis in the M-H curve and a remanent magnetization were found below about 7 K. A similar behavior was observed for sample B. The observed positive C-W temperature indicates a ferromagnetic interaction between nickel ions in each cluster, which is semiquantitatively consistent with nearest neighbor ferromagnetic interactions previously reported for antiferromagnetic NiO single crystals. The hysteresis suggests an enhanced magnetic anisotropy energy in the present clusters.

Notes: The redox behavior in acetone solution of (1,5-dithiacyclooctane 1-oxide)bis(pentaammineruthenium(II)) has been characterized, where the concept of “molecular hysteresis” is presented. Detailed thermodynamics for the complex are studied, in which intramolecular electron transfer rates for Ru3+OS/Ru2+→Ru2+SO/Ru3+ were determined as 0.12 sec-1 and 0.055 sec-1.The molecular hysteresis consists of two important factors: isomerizations for the sulfoxideruthenium complexes and the slow intramolecular electron transfer in the complex; both are examined. Isomerization rates for Ru3+S→O and Ru2+O→S determined range from 0.4 to 5000 sec-1 and from 0.7 to 16 sec-1, respectively, for [Ru(NH3)5(sulfoxide)]2+/3+. A mechanism for the slow electron transfer in the complex is also presented. Features of molecular hysteresis are discussed.
