Notes: Abstract The temperature dependences of the transverse V t and longitudinal V l sound velocities in single crystals of the perovskites La1−x SrxMnO3 (x=0.1, 0.175, 0.2, 0.25) in the temperature interval T=70–350 K are investigated by the resonance method. Anomalies — small minima and kinks in the temperature dependences V l (T) and V t (T) — are observed at the Curie points. A strong jumplike increase (by up to 30%) in both the longitudinal and transverse sound velocities, which attests to sizable hardening of the acoustic branches of the phonon spectrum, is observed near the temperatures of the structural transitions between the rhombohedral and orthorhombic phases (for x=0.175, 0.2, 0.25) and at the phase transition to the polaron-ordered state (for x=0.1).

Notes: Abstract The electrical conductivity, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and submillimeter (v=5∓20 cm−1) permittivity and dynamic conductivity of La1−x Sr x MnO3 (0≤x≤ 0.45) single crystals are investigated. The anomalies in the temperature dependences of these quantities are identified with diverse magnetic and structural phase transformations, including antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic ordering, structural transitions between strongly distorted (Jahn-Teller) and weakly distorted (pseudocubic) orthorhombic phases, structural transitions to a rhombohedral phase and unusual transitions to a polaron-ordering state. As a result, the complete T-x phase diagram of the system La1−2x Sr x MnO3 is constructed in a wide interval of temperatures T=4.2∓1050 K and concentrations x=0−0.45.

Notes: Abstract It is found that the bulk part ω of the magnetostriction near the Curie temperature T c in a La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 single crystal with the perovskite structure is negative and that the temperature dependence of |ω| has a maximum near T c . The quantity |ω| at the maximum increases rapidly with increasing magnetic field. The thermal expansion coefficient near T c increases with temperature much faster than linearly. The paramagnetic Curie temperature determined from the Curie-Weiss law, which the paramagnetic susceptibility of this crystal satifies, was found to be lower than T c . These anomalies and also the near-T c metal-insulator transition which is characteristic for this material are explained by the existence of a magnetically two-phase state consisting of a conducting ferromagnetic matrix containing antiferromagnetic insulating microregions occupying not more than 5% of the sample volume.
