Notes: Abstract The formation of a wake field around a swift ion passing through an electron gas and the resulting contribution to the stopping power acting on the ion is an intensively studied phenomenon in metals and semiconductors. The present investigation serves to clarify whether an analogous effect, namely the formation of wake fields and a corresponding contribution to the resistivity, might occur in the Galilei-transformed case of electronic transport in doped semiconductors where the gas of drifting charge carriers passes through an array of fixed impurity ions. By use of an appropriate dynamical screening theory we show that indeed a local plateau in the current density versus field characteristic has to be expected whenever the mean drift energy per carrier exceeds the sum of the mean thermal carrier energy and the zero-point energy of the longitudinal plasma mode of the carrier gas. However, our survey of the published literature suggests that this condition might be too stringent, at least for bulk materials and standard experimental situations, where the strong carrier heating in the high-field regime of relevance in combination with other drift-limiting mechanisms or interband electron-hole avalanching would always precede and prevent the formation of the wake.

Description: Jet A boiling range fuels and broad-property research fuels were produced by hydroprocessing shale oil distillates, and their properties were measured to characterize the fuels. The distillates were the fraction of whole shale oil boiling below 343 C from TOSCO 2 and Paraho syncrudes. The TOSCO 2 was hydroprocessed at medium severity, and the Paraho was hydroprocessed at high, medium, and low severities. Fuels meeting Jet A requirements except for the freezing point were produced from the medium severity TOSCO 2 and the high severity Paraho. Target properties of a broad property research fuel were met by the medium severity TOSCO 2 and the high severity Paraho except for the freezing point and a high hydrogen content. Medium and low severity Paraho jet fuels did not meet thermal stability and freezing point requirements.

Description: Several factors (crudes, refinery operation and specifications) that affect yields and properties of broad specification jet fuel were parameterized using the refinery simulation model which can simulate different types of refineries were used to make the calculations. Results obtained from the program are used to correlate yield as a function of final boiling point, hydrogen content and freezing point for jet fuels produced in two refinery configurations, each one processing a different crude mix. Refinery performances are also compared in terms of energy consumption.

Description: A literature survey of the properties of synfuels for ground-based turbine applications is presented. The four major concepts for converting coal into liquid fuels (solvent extraction, catalytic liquefaction, pyrolysis, and indirect liquefaction), and the most important concepts for coal gasification (fixed bed, fluidized bed, entrained flow, and underground gasification) are described. Upgrading processes for coal derived liquid fuels are also described. Data presented for liquid fuels derived from various processes, including H-coal, synthoil, solvent refined coal, COED, donor solvent, zinc chloride hydrocracking, co-steam, and flash pyrolysis. Typical composition, and property data is also presented for low and medium-BTU gases derived from the various coal gasification processes.
