Notes: Abstract An analytical expression of the modified form of the Einstein relation in heavily doped semiconductors in which Gaussian band tails are formed near the lower limit of heavy doping is derived for studying the temperature dependence of the diffusivity-mobility ratio of the carriers in such semiconductors. It is found that, with increasing temperature from relatively low values, the ratio first increases in a nonlinear manner and then decreases till, at high temperatures, it approaches its value corresponding to the non-degenerate condition resulting in a peak over a narrow range of temperatures.

Notes: Abstract An attempt is made to study the effect of a quantizing magnetic field on the effective electron mass in degeneraten-type narrow-gap semiconductors at low temperatures. It is found, takingn-Hg1−x Cd x Te as an example, that the effective electron mass shows an oscillatory magnetic-field dependence as is expected because of the dependence of the effective mass in degenerate non-parabolic bands on Fermi energy which oscillates with changing magnetic field. The amplitude of oscillations is, however, found to be significantly influenced by the alloy composition whereas the period is found to be independent of the band non-parabolicity, i.e. of the compositional parameter in ternary semiconductors.

Description: Author(s): M. Caminale, A. Ghosh, S. Auffret, U. Ebels, K. Ollefs, F. Wilhelm, A. Rogalev, and W. E. Bailey Ultrathin films of the heavy elements Pd and Pt are widely used in spintronics as converters between charge and spin currents and vice versa. One open question has been whether the strongly paramagnetic nature of these elements influences the interconversion process. The authors show, using a combination of ferromagnetic resonance and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements, that a related spin current absorption process (spin pumping damping) responds to the presence of ferromagnetic order in the polarizable Pd and Pt layers. They observe a change in the thickness dependence of spin current absorption when the Pd and Pt layers are in direct contact with a ferromagnet, compared with when they are in indirect contact. This change correlates with the presence of induced magnetic moments in Pd and Pt as revealed by element-specific x-ray magnetic circular dichroism magnetometry. The results show that the decoherence process for spin current in such layers is not independent of geometry, but rather is influenced by the presence of induced ferromagnetic order. [Phys. Rev. Description: Author(s): S. Ghosh, S. Datta, H. Zhou, M. J. R. Hoch, C. R. Wiebe, P. Schlottmann, and S. Hill Spin-cluster excitations induced by microwave radiation have been detected as a function of an applied magnetic field in the rare-earth kagome system Nd 3 Ga 5 SiO 14 . The results are interpreted using a Heisenberg model which allows for anisotropic exchange interactions between neighboring spins. At a m... [Phys. Rev. B 90, 224405] Published Wed Dec 03, 2014

Description: Problems in analytical processing of lunar orbiter photography are discussed. The effects of image motion and image motion compensation on the location of the principal point are analyzed. The effect of the focal plane shutter on the distortion and interior geometry is examined. Real data is used to confirm the workability of a mathematical model and the use of a computer to calibrate spaceborne photographic imagery.

Description: Glass plate targets containing multiple contrast three bar patterns and a military standard resolution target were photographed through a light-source collimator-camera system. The glass plate targets and images were then scanned. Through a computer plotting program selected portions of the scanned items were presented. The plots were then measured and analyzed to obtain information of image quality parameters and effects. The measurement errors are discussed together with aspects of resolution determination.
