    Notes: Abstract In the study of iron catalysts, careful passivation is necessary for study of microstructure by ex situ analytical techniques. The passivation procedure used in our study consists of heating the sample in He at the reaction temperature, cooling to room temperature and introducing small amounts of O2 (〈1%) in a flowing He stream. A properly passivated sample shows no more than a few nm of surface Fe3O4 onα-Fe, when examined in a high resolution TEM. Proper passivation is also characterized by an exotherm of no more than 2–3 K. We show that a Fischer-Tropsch catalyst carbided in CO will show substantial amounts of magnetite, if exposed to air without proper passivation. Such surface oxidation may cause errors in determining the relative amounts of the magnetite and carbide phases in Fischer-Tropsch catalysts, which are important for proper identification of the catalytically active phase.

    Notes: It is observed that the thick portions in a poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) filament differ from the rest in their solution viscosity and birefringence, indicating that they are caused by the inhomogeneity of the polymer melt. To identify the cause of the latter, the PET chips are critically examined. It is found that the waferlike tails on the edge of the PET chips and PET-dust have slightly higher viscosity than the chips. The behavior of the chips and the dust during drying and melt spinning are examined to find whether the dust becomes postpolymerized during drying. Such dried PET-dust exhibits substantially different melting behavior than the chips. The filaments spun from the mixture of chips and PET-dust exhibit significantly higher nonuniformity in properties than the filaments spun from the chips only. It is concluded that the PET-dust entering the extruder with the chips can cause thick portions in the filaments.

    Notes: Abstract The surface structure and morphology of Pt catalysts supported on various oxides were studied by HREM profile imaging. An unstable Ti oxide overlayer and a stable crystalline monolayer on TiO2 supported Pt particles were observed after HTR at 923K. The overlayers could explain the SMSI in Pt/TiO2.

    Notes: The alkali hydrolysis of poly(ethylene terephthalate), anionic copolymer of poly(ethylene terephthalate), and block copolymer of poly(ethylene terephthalate)-poly(ethylene glycol) is investigated under a variety of conditions of alkali concentration in aqueous bath, additives, time, and temperature. Measurements of loss in weight, linear density, breaking load, tenacity, elongation to break apart from intrinsic viscosity, fiber density, COOH-end group content, diameter of filaments, and scanning electron micrographs have been analyzed to identify the differences in the action of alkali on these polymer materials.
