Notes: Abstract By combined studies of electron spin resonance and optical absorption at low temperatures, the charge-transfer bands of Rh5+ and Rh4+ are identified to be peaked near 1.6 and 1.9 eV, respectively. On this basis, the light-induced charge-transfer processes in BaTiO3:Rh are unraveled at room temperature. It is shown that three charge states of Rh are involved, leading to two levels: the shallow Rh4+/5+ and the deeper Rh3+/4+ level. The optical behaviour of these two levels corresponds to those expected from a ‘two-center’ model. The present paper represents the first atomic-scale identification of three charge states of one element leading to optical ‘two-level’ response.

Notes: 3 –CaTiO3 is investigated with regard to a congruently melting composition. The liquidus curve is determined from x=0.0 to 0.3, where x is the mole fraction of CaTiO3. It shows a minimum melting point near x=0.23. Ba1-xCaxTiO3 crystals are grown by the Czochralski technique from melts close to this composition. X-ray fluorescence analyses of the crystals indicate a congruently melting composition at x=0.227, corresponding to the observed minimum melting point. At the growth temperature the crystals possess a cubic perovskite-type structure. They undergo a structure change to the ferroelectric tetragonal phase at 98±3 °C, indicated by a sharp peak of the dielectric constant. Down to -120 °C no further phase transition is observed.

Notes: Abstract Photoconductivities and photovoltaic currents of ruthenium-doped KNbO3 are orders of magnitude larger than that of undoped and ion-doped crystals. KNbO3:Ru is very sensitive for holographic recording with red light and the photovoltaic current increases sublinearly with light intensity.

Notes: Abstract Measurements of photoconductivity and light-induced absorption in KNbO3: Fe are performed at different light intensities and crystal temperatures. The results are interpreted in terms of a two-center charge transport model. Different model parameters may be evaluated from the experimental data. A complete set of parameters is suggested explaining the dependences of photoconductivity and light-induced absorption on light intensity and temperature for the KNbO3: Fe crystal investigated.

Notes: Abstract In high quality BaTiO3 crystals without trapping defects conduction electrons form Ti3+ polarons, their stabilization energy being caused by a Jahn–Teller effect. Depending on locally fluctuating potentials, tunable by uniaxial stress, small, intermediate, and banding electrons are identified by EPR. There are indications that also bipolarons are present.
