Notes: Abstract Direct measurement of the phase of the surface nonlinear susceptibility is based on the interference of nonlinear optical signals. Up to now, this has not been possible for Second-Harmonic Generation (SHG) in geometries such as Total Internal Reflection (TIR) due to the refractive dispersion of harmonic and fundamental light created in TIR. We demonstrate two schemes which enable us to overcome this dispersion, leading to interference between two second-harmonic signals generated consecutively by the same laser. The advantages and limitations of the two approaches are discussed. We use this technique to check the theoretical predictions for the nonlinear Fresnel factors for SHG in the TIR geometry.

Notes: Abstract We derive concise expressions for the intensity of radiation emitted by an oscillating polarization sheet located at an interface between two media. The expressions find application in a number of experimental situations involving scattering or secondharmonic generation at an interface. As an application we discuss the angular dependence of p-polarized second-harmonic light emitted by a layer of adsorbed molecules stimulated by s-polarized incident radiation.

Notes: Abstract We have studied the influence of (relative) phases between fundamental and generated harmonic in a variety of nonlinear optical experiments. The concomitant large coherence length and the various methods of phase-control known from linear optics facilitate amplitude superposition and the generation of novel interference patterns, which may be used to determine phase and amplitude of the constituent processes.

Notes: Abstract Coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) was used to measure the vibrational temperature of microwave-excited nitrogen in a N2−CO−He mixture. CARS spectra, originating from the N2-vibrational levelsv=0 up tov=3, have been recorded by both narrowband scanning of the resonance region as well as by broadband OSA detection. For the microwave-excited N2 molecules a vibrational temperatureT v (N 2 = (2130±110K) and a lower limit of detection forN 2(v = 3) = 1.2 x 1015 cm−3 was established. The CARS results were independently confirmed by simultaneously recorded and spectrally resolved CO infrared fluorescence studies.

Notes: Abstract Greatly improved second-harmonic emission has been obtained from dye monolayers adsorbed at quartz etalons. Two different types of interferometers have been studied in terms of the SH signal from dye coverage versus harmonic background emission. The phasematching-like conditions for constructive interferometric enhancement and the concomitant spatial and spectral emission characteristics are discussed in detail.

Notes: Abstract We develop a theory in which thin films or monolayers of strongly polarizable molecules are described as linear polarization sheets. We show that this concept in combination with the transfer matrix method allows a transparent derivation of the transmission and reflection properties of a composite interface.

Notes: Abstract We have studied the magnetic-dipole and electric-quadrupole contributions to second-harmonic generation (SHG) of centro-symmetric media. It can be shown that the phenomenological parameters α, β, γ can be arranged to form an effective $$\bar \chi _s^{(2)} $$ -tensor, which describes dipole-forbidden SHG as the effect of a surface layer upon excitation with a single plane electromagnetic wave. An experimental technique is proposed allowing a determination of the usually very small γ term due to magnetic-dipole interaction using coherent compensation of its contribution by a coverage with an appropriate dye monolayer.

Notes: Abstract TheQ-branch spectra of molecular hydrogen have been used to determine rotational temperatures bycoherentanti-StokesRamanscattering (CARS). A supersonic jet expansion through a constant flow nozzle of adjustable temperature served as hydrogen source in the temperature range 300 to 2500 K. The analysis of the high-temperature data reveals details of the internal energy transfer in jet expansion.

Notes: Abstract Using an excimer laser-pumped CARS spectrometer, single-pulse temperature measurements have been performed with a repetition rate of up to 80 Hz in a 3-dimensional, phase-matched geometry. Single-pulse temperature data measured in a furnace typically fluctuated by ± 50 K within the temperature range 300–1300 K. The CARS spectra were analyzed by the G-matrix formalism with inclusion of cross coherence effects.

Notes: Abstract Guided-wave second-harmonic generation using a passive planar waveguide covered with an organic nonlinear optical film as thin as a single molecular layer is demonstrated. The phase-matching condition of this process is revealed both with a high degree of waveguide-mode selectivity and a maximum in the frequency response.
