    Description: Upward leakage of saline water from an artesian aquifer below 1,500 feethas caused an increase in chloride concentration in the lower Hawthorn aquiferfrom less than 1,000 mg/1 (milligrams per liter) to values ranging from about1,300 to 15,000 mg/1. Similarly the higher temperatures of the intruding waterhas caused an increase in water temperatures in the aquifer from 82"F to valuesranging from 83 to 93"F. The intruding water moves upward either through theopen bore hole of deep wells or test holes, or along a fault or fracture system,which has been identified in the area. From these points of entry into the lowerHawthorn aquifer, the saline water spreads laterally toward the south andsoutheast, but is generally confined to components of the fault system.The saline water moves upward from the lower Hawthorn aquifer into theupper Hawthorn aquifer through the open bore hole of wells, which connect theaquifers. This movement has resulted in an increase in chloride from less than200 mg/1 in the unaffected parts of the upper Hawthorn aquifer to valuescommonly ranging from about 300 to more than 3,000 mg/1 in parts of theaquifer affected by upward leakage. The upper Hawthorn aquifer is the principalsource of ground-water supply for public water-supply systems in western LeeCounty.Similar effects have been noted in the water-table aquifer, where chlorideincreased from less than 100 to concentrations ranging from about 500 to morethan 5,000 mg/1. This was caused by the downward infiltration of waterdischarged at land surface from wells tapping the lower Hawthorn aquifer.The spread of saline water throughout most of the McGregor Isles area iscontinuing as of 1971.(40 page document)

    Description: A preliminary spectrum is presented of the background radiation between 1 and 20/cm from regions near the north Galactic pole, as observed by the FIRAS instrument on the COBE satellite. The spectral resolution is 1/cm. The spectrum is well fitted by a blackbody with a temperature of 2.735 + or - 0.06 K, and the deviation from a blackbody is less than 1 percent of the peak intensity over the range 1-20/cm. These new data show no evidence for the submillimeter excess previously reported by Matsumoto et al. (1988) in the cosmic microwave background. Further analysis and additional data are expected to improve the sensitivity to deviations from a blackbody spectrum by an order of magnitude.

    Description: A general approach to compression of diverse data from large scientific projects has been developed and this paper addresses the appropriate system and scientific constraints together with the algorithm development and test strategy. This framework has been implemented for the COsmic Background Explorer spacecraft (COBE) by retrofitting the existing VAS-based data management system with high-performance compression software permitting random access to the data. Algorithms which incorporate scientific knowledge and consume relatively few system resources are preferred over ad hoc methods. COBE exceeded its planned storage by a large and growing factor and the retrieval of data significantly affects the processing, delaying the availability of data for scientific usage and software test. Embedded compression software is planned to make the project tractable by reducing the data storage volume to an acceptable level during normal processing.

    Description: Results of the first year of data from the differential microwave radiometers on the Cosmic Background Explorer are presented. Statistically significant structure that is well described as scale-invariant fluctuations with a Gaussian distribution is shown. The rms sky variation, smoothed to a total 10-deg FWHM Gaussian, is 30 +/-5 micro-K for Galactic latitude greater than 20-deg data with the dipole anisotropy removed. The rms cosmic quadrupole amplitude is 13 +/-4 micro-K. The angular autocorrelation of the signal in each radiometer channel and cross-correlation between channels are consistent and give a primordial fluctuation power-law spectrum with index of 1.1 +/-0.5, and an rms-quadrupole-normalized amplitude of 16 +/-4 micro-K. These features are in accord with the Harrison-Zel'dovich spectrum predicted by models of inflationary cosmology.

    Description: The large-scale cosmic background anisotropy detected by the COBE Differential Microwave Radiometer (DMR) instrument is compared to the sensitive previous measurements on various angular scales, and to the predictions of a wide variety of models of structure formation driven by gravitational instability. The observed anisotropy is consistent with all previously measured upper limits and with a number of dynamical models of structure formation. For example, the data agree with an unbiased cold dark matter (CDM) model with H0 = 50 km/s Mpc and Delta-M/M = 1 in a 16 Mpc radius sphere. Other models, such as CDM plus massive neutrinos (hot dark matter (HDM)), or CDM with a nonzero cosmological constant are also consistent with the COBE detection and can provide the extra power seen on 5-10,000 km/s scales.
