Notes: Abstract The structure of unoccupied electronic states in Xe condensed on differently prepared metal surfaces has been observed by inverse photoemission spectroscopy. The Xe/metal interface is interpreted in the framework of Schottky barrier theory. On low workfunction surfaces a wetting to non-wetting phase transition is inferred from dramatic changes in the unoccupied level structure. Existing data in the literature indicate non-wetting behaviour of Xe on low work-function materials to be a quite general phenomenon.

Notes: By means of laser microprobe mass analysis (LAMMA), we have studied the ultrastructural localization of aluminium in livers of aluminium maltol-treated rabbits. This animal model was developed to study long-term aluminium toxicity using systemic (intravenous) administration of aluminium. We could only detect aluminium in electron-dense inclusion bodies found in large, sometimes multinucleated cells. These results prove that the actual observation of aluminium deposits in liver with LAMMA gives more information than bulk analysis and can be very useful to explore mechanisms of toxicity.

Notes: Abstract Combined structural and chemical characterization of cationic polynuclear palladium coordination compounds Pd561L60(OAc)180, where L=1,10-phenantroline or 2,2′-bipyridine has been carried out by high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) and analytical electron microscopy methods including electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), zero-loss electron spectroscopic imaging, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The cell structure of the cluster matter with almost completely uniform metal core size distributions centered around 2.3 ±0.5 nm was observed. Zero-loss energy filtering allowed to improve the image contrast and resolution. HREM images showed that most of the palladium clusters had a cubo-octahedral shape. Some of them had a distorted icosahedron structure exhibiting multiple twinning. The selected-area electron diffraction patterns confirmed the face centered cubic structure with lattice parameter close to that of metallic palladium. The energy-loss spectra of the populations of clusters contained several bands, which could be assigned to the delayed Pd M4, 5-edge at 362 eV, the Pd M3-edge at 533 eV and the Pd M2-edge at 561 eV, the NK-edge at about 400 eV, the O K-edge at 532 eV overlapping with the Pd M3-edge and the carbon C K-edge at 284 eV. Background subtraction was applied to reveal the exact positions and fine structure of low intensity elemental peaks. EELS evaluations have been confirmed by EDX. The recorded series of the Pd M-edges and the N K-edge in the spectra of the giant palladium clusters obviously were related to Pd-Pd- and Pd-ligand bonding.

Notes: The objective of this study was exploration of the potential, offered by the laser microprobe mass spectrometer (LAMMA), for the in situ localization of organic targets in embedded tissues by means of structurally relevant ions. A series of model systems was designed to evaluate stepwise the analytical problems involved. A preliminary screening pointed to the position of the target in comparison to the actual sample surface as a determining parameter. Refined simulations were carried out with sandwich samples, consisting of an epon carrier (thickness 1 μm), coated with microcrystalline targets and covered with a layer between 5 and 50 nm of different materials (epon, carbon, formvar). In addition to a stimulated conversion of molecular into fragment ions, the presence of a barrier leads to a drastic loss of sensitivity (20-50 x) and unacceptable degradation of the mass spectrometric quality (resolution, calibration).

Notes: Laser microprobe mass analysis (LAMMA) was used to study the composition of the brick-red crystalline material which had accumulated in the spleen of mice that had received the anti-leprosy drug Clofazimine in their diet for several months. The crystalline deposits light-microscopically resembled pure Clofazimine crystals. The presence of the drug in the crystals was indicated by LAMMA by the appearance of the chloride mass peaks in the negative mass spectra. More specific information was obtained from the positive mass spectra. A mass signal for the protonated molecule was present.

Notes: The glass transition temperatures (Tg's) of several polystyrenes and styrene-alkyl methacrylate copolymers and terpolymers were measured using thermomechanical analysis (TMA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The polymers studied had number-average molecular weights from 3000 to 250,000 g/mole. The results indicate that the composition dependence of the Tg's for the copolymers and terpolymers can be satisfactorily described by a general Fox equation. In general, the measured Tg's of the copolymer and terpolymer samples depend more on the steric effects of the constituent pendent groups than on their molecular weights. The chain flexibility rather than the size of the pendent group is the determining factor in the glass transition properties of the styrene polymers.

Notes: The thermal stability and degradation kinetics of several polystyrenes and styrene-alkyl methacrylate copolymers and terpolymers with a number-average molecular weight (M̄n) of 6000-250,000 g/mole have been studied using dynamic thermogravimetry (TG). The degradation kinetics of each polymer sample have been successfully attributed to a sample first-order reaction expression. The results indicate that the thermal stability and degradation kinetics of the polymers are independent of the size of the molecules within the molecular weight range investigated. The steric hindrance effects of the pendent groups appear to be responsible for the improved thermal stability and resistance of C—C bond scission in the styrene-alkyl methacrylate copolymers and terpolymers.
