Notes: Abstract We report a theoretical and experimental investigation of the effects of collisional quenching on resonant degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM). Using single-mode laser radiation, peak signal intensity measurements were performed on an isolated line in the A – X transition of NO. By using appropriate mixtures of N2 and CO2 as buffer gases, we varied the collisional quenching rate over several orders of magnitude while maintaining a fixed total collisional dephasing rate. The mixtures had approximately 100 Torr total pressure and were at room temperature. For I/I sat approximately equal to 0.02, DFWM intensities were found to be less affected by variations in quench rate than were laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) intensities (I and I sat are the pump laser and one-photon saturation intensities, respectively). Moreover, for I/I sat roughly equal to 0.5, DFWM intensities were observed to be nearly independent of quench rate. The results are compared to two theoretical predictions, with good agreement observed. Both theories indicate that the minimum sensitivity of DFWM to quenching occurs near I/I sat≈1.

Notes: Abstract The first-instar cockroach, Periplaneta americana, detects air movements using four filiform hair sensilla, which make synaptic connections to seven pairs of giant interneurons (GIs) in the terminal abdominal ganglion. The directional sensitivities of some of the GIs, predicted from their patterns of monosynaptic inputs, may not be the same as in the second instar or adult. Intracellular recordings were made to determine the contribution of polysynaptic inputs to the receptive fields of first-instar GIs. The ventral GI1, and the dorsal GI5, GI6, and GI7 were all found to have indirect synaptic inputs from filiform afferents. The indirect inputs were excitatory to GI1, GI5, and GI7, and inhibitory to GI6 and GI7. The indirect excitatory input to GI1 was predicted to alter qualitatively its receptive field, allowing it to respond to wind from the side of the animal, as in the adult. Inhibition was predicted to sharpen the receptive fields of GI6 and GI7. The inhibitory postsynaptic potentials reversed 6–8 mV below resting potential and were blocked by picrotoxin, indicating that they are GABAergic. Indirect excitation also altered the predicted receptive field of GI7, one of the inputs being an unusual “off-response” to movement of a filiform hair in its inhibitory direction.

Notes: Chemical shifts of the olefinic carbons of ω-substituted 1-pentenes and 1-butenes and the aromatic carbons of phenylethanes and phenylpropanes have been measured. Correlations with various substitutent constants, electronegativities, NMR data from related chemical systems and calculated electrical fields were evaluated. Although the pattern of results is quite consistent with expectations for a field-induced shift of π-electron density, simple correlations of high statistical precision are not found. The general problem of correlating substitutent effects with reactivity and NMR shifts is discussed.

Notes: True interpolymers of acrylonitrile and vinylidene chloride were prepared with the use of tert-butyl alcohol or a mixture of tert-butyl alcohol and water as the polymerization solvent. Analysis of the polymers showed that the ratio of the two monomers in the copolymers was very close to the initial monomer ratio. The polymers were tested for homogeneity by their solubility in acetone or acetonitrile.
