    Notes: Abstract We have studiedK-shell ionization induced by 30 MeV/u Ne and Ar projectiles on target atoms with atomic numbers ranging from 27 to 90. X-ray production cross sections and energy shifts were measured with Si(Li) detectors. In most cases satisfactory agreement between measurements and theoretical direct ionization cross sections is obtained when the contribution of electron capture is included. The influence of multiple ionization on the fluorescence yield ω K is discussed.

    Description: A color-magnitude diagram of NGC 147 to an I magnitude of 23 is presented. The stellar population in the outer parts of this elliptical galaxy resembles that of the globular clusters of the Milky Way. Quantitative comparison of the giant branch with those of globular clusters yields a mean metallicity of -1.2 + or - 0.2, making NGC 147 a part of the general correlation between mass and metallicity seen in ellipticals. The giant branch appears to be broad, which suggests a metallicity dispersion. The absence of asymptotic giant branch stars at luminosities above that of the red giant branch tip sets an upper limit of 10 percent for the fraction of stars in this NGC 147 field that have ages less than 12 Gyr. This result contrasts with the situation in some of the related, but less massive, dwarf spheroidal systems. If the choice is made to assume, rather than determine the stellar content of NGC 147, a distance of 630 + or - 50 kpc is derived, similar to that of M31.

    Description: Results are presented on CCD photometric observations of a large sample of stars in the southern globular cluster NGC 6101, and the procedures used to derive the color-magnitude (C-M) diagram of the cluster are described. No indication was found of any difference in age, at the less than 2 Gyr level, between NGC 6101 cluster and other clusters of similar abundance, such as M92. The C-M diagram revealed a significant blue straggler population. It was found that, in NGC 6101, these stars are more centrally concentrated than the cluster subgiants of similar magnitude, indicating that the blue stragglers have larger masses. Results on the magnitude and luminosity function of the sample are consistent with the bianry mass transfer or merger hypotheses for the origin of blue straggler stars.

    Description: The radial velocity, velocity dispersion, and mass-to-light ratio for 16 K giants in the Sculptor dwarf galaxy are calculated. Spectra at the Ca II triplet are analyzed using cross-correlation techniques in order to obtain the mean velocity of + 107.4 + or - 2.0 km/s. The dimensional velocity dispersion estimated as 6.3 (+1.1, -1.3) km/s is combined with the calculated core radius and observed central surface brightness to produce a mass-to-light ratio of 6.0 in solar units. It is noted that the data indicate that the Sculptor contains a large amount of mass not found in globular clusters, and the mass is either in the form of remnant stars or low-mass dwarfs.

    Description: The luminosities of the core helium burning stars in six Magellanic Cloud intermediate-age star clusters, whose ages have recently been determined from photometry reaching below the main-sequence turnoff, are compared with the predictions of a new grid of theoretical models. It is found that for the so-called 'short' distance moduli consistent results can be achieved with moderate amounts of mass loss from the main sequence to the core helium burning stage for the older clusters, and with rather more substantial mass loss for the younger objects. For the 'long' moduli, however, the results of the comparison give inconsistent results in that the required masses for the clump stars generally exceed the corresponding turnoff masses, in some cases by several tenths of a solar mass. The results support the adoption of smaller distances to these galaxies.
