Abstract The time-dependent rotated Hartree (TDRH) approach is reconsidered. Concentrating on the use of the harmonic Lie algebra it is shown that the inclusion of separable generators for the (generalized) rotations leads to several advantages, although it cannot improve the TDRH approximation. This inclusion makes the method more transparent, both conceptually as well as numerically. The TDRH method is discussed in general forn degrees of freedom. The special casesn=2 andn=3 are treated in more detail. The structure matrices are presented explicitly for these cases.
