Notes: Abstract Amino acid composition of the protein in the oral secretion, which is widely used for construction and maintenance of social wasp nests, was analyzed in preemergence nests of Polistes (Polistes) riparius. The kinds and proportion (%) of amino acids of the protein detected from nests of P. riparius were very similar to those of a consubgeneric species, P. (P.) chinensis, but were conspicuously different from those of other social wasp genera. Further, it was estimated that protein contents in oral secretion of P. riparius were nearly the same as those of P. chinensis; namely, foundresses of P. riparius, which build much larger nests than those of P. chinensis, did not reduce relative protein contents to produce more oral secretion at a smaller cost. Amino acid composition may reflect phylogenetic relationships among wasp taxa.

Notes: Abstract The allocation pattern of proteinaceous resources was estimated in preemergence colonies of Polistes chinensis. Foundresses that nested at exposed sites consumed a larger relative amount of proteinaceous resources to produce oral secretion, which is used for construction and maintenance of nests, than those at sheltered sites. Numbers of immatures reared by foundresses were smaller in exposed nests than those in sheltered ones, and further, workers that emerged from exposed nests were significantly smaller in size than those from sheltered ones. Foundresses had to partition available proteinaceous resources not only among the first batch of the brood but also, before that, between brood nourishment and secretion production in response to given environmental conditions.

Notes: Measurements of melting points were made for melt-polymerized aliphatic-aromatic copolyamides; (i) N66PT, (ii) N66CT, and (iii) N66ST, i.e., nylon 66 [poly(hexamethylene adpamide)] copolymerized with three kinds of aromatic diamines, p-phenylenediamine (P), bis (p-aminophenyl) methane (C), and bis (p-aminophenyl) sulfone (S), and terephthalic acid (T). As the mole fraction of copolymerized component n1, increases in the case of (ii) or (iii), the melting point decreases uniformly according to the relationship of Flory. In the case of (i), the melting point first decreases and then begins to increase after passing a minimum at n1 ≃ 0.2. A preliminary WAXD (wide-angle X-ray diffraction) study on N66PT crystals shows that the basal plane of the crystal lattice shifts from that of nylon 66 toward hexagonal packing with the increase of n1. It was suggested that the formation of mixed crystals for a series of N66PT will be attributed to their melting point behavior.

Notes: A sensitive and rapid method to analyse fuel components in blood from rats exposed to kerosene or light oil vapour was developed by making use of capillary gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The aliphatic hydrocarbons with carbon numbers 8-10 and aromatics such as toluene, xylene, 3- and 4-ethyltoluene and trimethylbenzenes were clearly detected in blood from rats exposed to kerosene or light oil vapour, using the head-space method combined with the salting-out technique. The concentration ratio of pseudocumene to toluene in blood exposed to light oil was higher than that in the case of exposure to kerosene. The lower limits of detection were 50 pg and 1 ng in toluene and pseudocumene, respectively. Our suggestion is that this method is useful in forensic investigations to detect fuel components in blood and for the purposes of differentiating kerosene and light oil in blood tissues.

Notes: Elastomers, based on cellulose fibers, were synthesized by grafting ethyl acrylate onto fibers preirradiated by a high-energy electron beam. The rheological properties and fine structure of the elastomers were investigated in order to determine factors in development of rubber-like elastomeric behavior. Mechanical properties of the elastomers depended on (1) degree of polymerization of irradiated cellulose molecules, (2) extent of grafting, and (3) experimental methods of evaluation, particularly in varying environmental conditions, for example, in making measurements in air, water, or ethyl acetate. Glass transition temperatures of the elastomers were dependent on the environmental conditions of evaluation; stiffnesses of the elastomers levelled off at about 0°C; and in all environments, a rubber-like plateau was observed. Poly(ethyl acrylate) separated from the elastomers was not soluble in acetone. The mean molecular weight of the separated poly(ethyl acrylate) of the elastomer was determined in ethyl acetate by the equilibrium swelling method. It was concluded that crosslinks existed in the elastomers. Electron microphotographs of cross sections of the elastomers, which exhibited rubber-like behavior, indicated that the fibrillar structure of the irradiated cellulose fibers formed a uniform network and that poly(ethyl acrylate) was uniformly distributed among the fibrils.
