    Notes: Abstract.  We prove that if is a finite valued stationary Markov Chain with strictly positive probability transitions, then for any natural number p, there exists a continuum of finite valued non Markovian processes which have the p-marginal distributions of X and with positive entropy, whereas for an irrational rotation and essentially bounded real measurable function f with no zero Fourier coefficient on the unit circle with normalized Lebesgue measure, the process is uniquely determined by its three-dimensional distributions in the class of ergodic processes. We give also a family of Gaussian non-Markovian dynamical systems for which the symbolic dynamic associated to the time zero partition has the two-dimensional distributions of a reversible mixing Markov Chain.

    Notes: Abstract In order to illustrate the class of conservative dynamical systems for which a Boltzmann entropy can be obtained under finite coarse-graining [2], we consider dynamical systems defined by the shift transformation on K ℤ, where K is any finite set of integers. We give a class of non-Markovian invariant measures that verify the Chapman-Kolmogorov equation (equivalent to a Boltzmann entropy) for any positive stochastic matrix and that are ergodic but not weakly mixing.

    Notes: A series of direct-integration and model-expansion finite element algorithms for a geometrically and materially nonlinear elastodynamic problem are constructed and analysed. The algorithms are constructed by temporally approximating the individual nonlinear stiffness terms such that discrete conservation laws are obtained. This conservative property has a positive effect in providing a stable appromixation, and in addition allows the stability properties of the algorithms to be easily assessed. Stability and convergence criteria for the algorithms are rigorously established using an energy method.

    Notes: A numerical method to handle the flow of a two-phase fluid over curved boundaries is proposed. The method is based on the double von Mises transformation which is derived in this work and is expected to be applicable to a variety of flow situations while utilizing the finite difference technique. In order to illustrate the numerical implementation of the method, dusty fluid flow through a porous channel possessing curved boundaries and the flow through a semi-infinite porous layer overlying a curved lower boundary are considered. The flow is assumed to be governed by model equations based on Brinkman's equation and reflecting boundary conditions are employed in the study based on a uniform dust particle distribution. Results indicate that an increase in the permeability results in decreasing the tangential velocity component in regions close to the curved boundary, and increasing the dust parameters decreases this component. The effects of the grid size and the extent of the computational domain are discussed. The results also shed some light on the applicability of the dusty fluid flow model and suggest that the model is best employed when the permeability is high, a conclusion that is consistent with the validity of Brinkman's equation.

    Description: The overall goal of this study is to address issues of environmental health and enhance public health decision making by using NASA remotely sensed data and products. This study is a collaboration between NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, Universities Space Research Association (USRA), the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Office of Surveillance, Epidemiology and Laboratory Services. The objectives of this study are to develop high-quality spatial data sets of environmental variables, link these with public health data from a national cohort study, and deliver the environmental data sets and associated public health analyses to local, state and federal end ]user groups. Three daily environmental data sets were developed for the conterminous U.S. on different spatial resolutions for the period 2003-2008: (1) spatial surfaces of estimated fine particulate matter (PM2.5) on a 10-km grid using US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ground observations and NASA's MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data; (2) a 1-km grid of MODIS Land Surface Temperature (LST); and (3) a 12-km grid of daily incoming solar radiation and maximum and minimum air temperature using the North American Land Data Assimilation System (NLDAS) data. These environmental datasets were linked with public health data from the UAB REasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) national cohort study to determine whether exposures to these environmental risk factors are related to cognitive decline, stroke and other health outcomes. These environmental national datasets will also be made available to public health professionals, researchers and the general public via the CDC Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (WONDER) system, where they can be aggregated to the county-level, state-level, or regional-level as per users f need and downloaded in tabular, graphical, and map formats. This provides a significant addition to the CDC WONDER online system, allowing public health researchers and policy makers to better include environmental exposure data in the context of other health data available in CDC WONDER. It also substantially expands public access to NASA data, making their use by a wide range of decisionmakers feasible.

    Description: Objectives. To provide an overview of four environmental public health surveillance projects developed by CDC and its partners for the Health and Environment Linked for Information Exchange, Atlanta (HELIX-Atlanta) and to illustrate common issues and challenges encountered in developing an environmental public health tracking system. Methods. HELIX-Atlanta, initiated in October 2003 to develop data linkage and analysis methods that can be used by the National Environmental Public Health Tracking Network (Tracking Network), conducted four projects. We highlight the projects' work, assess attainment of the HELIX-Atlanta goals and discuss three surveillance attributes. Results. Among the major challenges was the complexity of analytic issues which required multidiscipline teams with technical expertise. This expertise and the data resided across multiple organizations. Conclusions:Establishing formal procedures for sharing data, defining data analysis standards and automating analyses, and committing staff with appropriate expertise is needed to support wide implementation of environmental public health tracking.

    Description: CDC and its partners established the Health and Environment Linked for Information Exchange, Atlanta (HELIX-Atlanta) demonstration project, to develop linking and analysis methods that could be used by the National Environmental Public Health Tracking (EPHT) Network. Initiated in October 2003, the Metropolitan Atlanta-based collaborative conducted four projects: asthma and particulate air pollution, birth defects and ozone and particulate air pollution, childhood leukemia and traffic emissions, and children's blood lead testing and neighborhood risk factors for lead poisoning. This report provides an overview of the HELIX-Atlanta projects' goals, methods and outcomes. We discuss priority attributes and common issues and challenges and offer recommendations for implementation of the nascent national environmental public health tracking network.

    Description: As part of the National Environmental Public Health Tracking Network (EPHTN) the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is leading a project called Health and Environment Linked for Information Exchange (HELiX-Atlanta). The goal of developing the National Environmental Public Health Tracking Network is to improve the health of communities. Currently, few systems exist at the state or national level to concurrently track many of the exposures and health effects that might be associated with environmental hazards. An additional challenge is estimating exposure to environmental hazards such as particulate matter whose aerodynamic diameter is less than or equal to 2.5 micrometers (PM2.5). HELIX-Atlanta's goal is to examine the feasibility of building an integrated electronic health and environmental data network in five counties of Metropolitan Atlanta, GA. NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (NASA/MSFC) is collaborating with CDC to combine NASA earth science satellite observations related to air quality and environmental monitoring data to model surface estimates of PM2.5 concentrations that can be linked with clinic visits for asthma. While use of the Air Quality System (AQS) PM2.5 data alone could meet HELIX-Atlanta specifications, there are only five AQS sites in the Atlanta area, thus the spatial coverage is not ideal. We are using NASA Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) data for estimating daily ground level PM2.5 at 10 km resolution over the metropolitan Atlanta area supplementing the AQS ground observations and filling their spatial and temporal gaps.
