Abstract The parton structure revealed by the scattering of leptons from atomic nuclei can be described either by means of nuclear physics concepts or in terms of a fundamental QCD picture of quarks and gluons. In this paper the nuclear physics description, formulated in the convolution model with ordinary or exotic hadrons as constituents, is examined, and various constraints which should be satisfied are discussed. The conclusion is that the generalized hadronic convolution model must, at least for the present, in any case form part of any comprehensive treatment of the parton structure of composite systems.
