    Notes: Abstract The effects of various electron transport inhibitors upon the rates of reduction NO 3 - , dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) and N2O in anaerobic suspensions of Rhodobacter capsulatus have been studied. A new method for the determination of the rates of reduction of these auxiliary oxidants in intact cells is presented, based on the proportionality observed between the concentration of oxidant and the duration of the electrochromic carotenoid bandshift. For NO 3 - and N2O good agreement was found between rates of reduction determined using electrodes and those determined by the electrochromic method. Myxothiazol and antimycin A had no effect on the rates of reduction of NO 3 - and DMSO suggesting that the cytochrome b/c 1complex is not involved in electron transport to these oxidants. 2-n-heptyl-4-hydroxyquinoline-N-oxide (HOQNO) inhibited at two sites, one within the cytochrome b/c 1complex and the other on the nitrate reducing pathay, but had no effect on electron transport to N2O or DMSO. In both intact cells and cell free extracts, HOQNO had no effect on the nitrate dependent re-oxidation of reduced methylviologen (MVH2), a direct electron donor to nitrate reductase. Our data are consistent with a branch point for the auxiliary electron transport pathways at the level of the ubiquinone pool.

    Notes: Because of the recent trend in total hip arthroplasty to achieve direct contact of the endoprosthesis with cortical bone, comparison of bone apposition from cortical bone and cancellous bone was performed. The response of cortical and cancellous bone to hydroxylapatite was also compared. Implants in cortical bone demonstrated a higher interface shear strength and more bone apposition than those in cancellous bone over all time periods tested. Hydroxylapatite coating increased the interfacial shear and bone apposition in cortical bone at all time periods and in both the 3- and 6-week cancellous bone models. The potential effect of stress shielding (and subsequent bone resorption) by femoral stems ingrown with cortical bone is discussed. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Electrolysis of solutions of α-methylstyrene in THF resulted in the formation of the characteristic spectra of the living anions in the cathode compartment. The increase in absorbance of the solution was strictly proportional to the charge transferred at the electrode, and was independent of the electrolyte for NaAl(C2H5)4, NaB(C6H5)4, and KB(C6H5)4. For solutions of LiB(C6H5)4 the color decreased spontaneously on standing, and a linear relationship between absorbance and charge transferred was not obtained. Mixing of the anode and cathode solutions resulted in a destruction of the living ends and a disappearance of the color, which could be regenerated by further electrolysis. Reversal of the polarity of the electrodes produced a stoichiometric destruction of the living ends and a decrease in absorbance directly dependent on the charge transferred. The exact stoichiometric dependence furnished means of estimating impurity levels, living anion concentrations, and optical extinction coefficients based on the number of faradays passed through the solution. The control of molecular weight distribution and rate of reaction by these methods is indicated.

    Description: A Lagrangian formulation for the three-dimensional motion of a satellite in the vicinity of the collinear points of the circular-restricted problem is reconsidered. It is shown that the influence of the primaries can be expressed in the form of two third-body disturbing functions. By use of this approach, the equations for the Lagrangian and for the motion itself are readily developed into highly compact expressions. All orders of the non-linear developments are shown to be easily obtainable using well-known recursive relationships. The resulting forms for these equations are well suited for use in the initial phase of canonical or non-canonical investigations.

    Description: Preliminary results are presented for a study aimed at a quantitative comparison of microvascular dynamics in second-generation rats reared in a 2-g force field produced by centrifugation with similar data from animals reared in a centrifuge that produced only a 1-g force. It is shown that the pressure distribution in the mesenteric microvasculature of the second generation of rats reared in a 2-g environment, as well as the animals' blood pressure response to epinephrine, are significantly different compared to their 1-g counterparts. In particular, 1-g and 2-g chronic centrifugation enhances the arterial blood pressure, and the 2-g force field attenuates the pressor effects of norepinephrine.

    Description: Bounded motion about Lagrange collinear libration points is considered for a perturbed elliptic-restricted problem. A practical application is the motion of a satellite near a libration point collinear with the sun and the earth-moon barycenter. Such a system is treated here as an earth-sun-satellite elliptic restricted problem with lunar perturbations. The method of dual time scales is utilized to develop a uniformly valid three-dimensional analytical solution to the satellite's equations of motion. The analytical development applies somewhat generally to that class of four-body problems where the second primary mass is much greater than the first, and the third primary mass is much greater than the second.
