Notes: Abstract Cytochrome c′′ from Methylophilus methylotrophus contains a single haem with bis-histidine coordination which couples electron and proton transfer by reversible detachment of one of the axial ligands on reduction. 13C NMR of the haem substituents is now used to determine the orientations of the two histidine ligands of the ferricytochrome. The relative orientation of the ligands is found to be nearly perpendicular (an angle of 85±2° between the histidine planes was obtained), which is consistent with the near-axial g-tensor determined by EPR. Although the absolute orientation of the axial ligands is not well defined in the presence of near-axial symmetry, 13C NMR is found to be a useful complement to EPR for obtaining quantitative information for systems of this type.

Notes: Mixtures of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and plasticizer were made by γ-irradiation of mixtures of methyl methacrylate with diethyl phthalate or with dioctyl phthalate. The glass transition temperature Tg was determined by differential scanning calorimetry. Plots of Tg versus volume fraction of PMMA were found to conform to the simple free volume theory of Kelley and Bueche, using physical property values either reported in the literature or else calculated by Bondi's procedures.

Notes: When purified rubber is exposed in vacuo to high energy radiation, very few conjugated triene groups are formed relative to the number of molecules of hydrogen evolved. This indicates that less than 4% of the hydrogen is evolved from adjacent carbon atoms in the same molecule, a reaction which would have no immediate crosslinking potential. Rather more conjugated diene groups have been detected, but when these are compared together with triene groups relative to the yield of chemical crosslinks it can be calculated that less than 10% of the allylic radical precursors disproportionate. Infrared absorption spectra do not indicate the marked decrease in unsaturation reported by some previous workers. Slight changes in the infared spectra may indicate some cis-trans isomerization. There is qualitative evidence for a small increase in vinylidene unsaturation.

Notes: Glassy crosslinked networks were prepared by copolymerization of methyl methacrylate with up to 4.7 mole-percent ethylene dimethacrylate. These networks were degraded by exposure to γ-rays and the solubilized fraction estimated by benzene extraction using the analysis of A. R. Schultz. The efficiency of the Crosslinking agent was found to be 0.5 and this value was used to calculate the molecular weight between crosslinks. The molecular weight of the primary molecules in the network, M, was estimatfrom the radiation dose using the known fact that one fracture requires an energy deposition of 59 ev. Crosslinking was found to have little influence on the tensile strength of networks of primary molecular weight 〉 105. In contrast. crosslinking raised, the strength of polymers of M 〈 105 to, a value approaching that of a high molecular weight linear polymer (ca. 70MN/m2). Crosslinking was found to have only a small influence on the gross morphology of fracture surfaces.

Notes: Glassy networks were formed by copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with both ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDM) and triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TGDM). The polymerization reaction was followed by estimation of vinyl group concentration from measurements of specific volume and infrared absorption. The sheets of polymer were cracked but gave fragments that were large enough to provide specimens suitable for a three-point bending test. Flexural strength decreased with increasing feed of dimethacrylate but, nevertheless, gave fairly strong products throughout the range of comonomer compositions c.f. PMMA, 144 ± 9 MPa; PTGDM, 132 ± 10 MPa; PEGDM, 66 ± 15 MPa. Examination of fracture surfaces indicated a predominantly brittle mode of fracture modulated by localized plastic deformation. In order to account for localized plastic deformation, it was postulated that the networks consist of highly crosslinked microgel particles in a much less crosslinked matrix.
