Description: Alkenone unsaturation indices (Uk'37) of marine sediment could prove particularly useful on organic-rich continental margins where carbonate dissolution hampers the use of other paleoclimatic proxies [McCaffrey et al., 1990, doi:10.1016/0016-7037(90)90399-6; Kennedy and Brassell, 1992, doi:10.1016/0146-6380(92)90040-5]. Forty core top samples of Recent sediment from a latitudinal transect (23°-40°N) along the California margin yield Uk'37 values that correlate linearly with modern mean annual sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the range of 12°-23°C. Reproducibility of the unsaturation value in closely spaced cores is near analytical error. Uk'37 data define a relationship to temperature nearly identical to the Prahl et al. [1988, doi:10.1016/0016-7037(88)90132-9] laboratory cultures of Emiliania huxleyi. The close agreement is particularly significant in light of the nannofossil composition of the sediments, where the abundance of the coccolith taxon Gephyrocapsa oceanica (known to synthesize alkenones) equals or exceeds that of E. huxleyi. Comparison with seasonal temperature variations at different depths indicates that little if any alkenone production occurs at depths 〉30 m along the continental margin (water depths 〈2 km). Sediments in more pelagic locations exhibit small but consistent biases toward winter and/or subsurface production similar to previously reported sediment trap and core top data from the Oregon margin [Prahl et al., 1993, doi:10.1016/0967-0637(93)90045-5; Doose et al., 1997, doi:10.1029/97PA00821].

Description: Estimates of the C37 total (ng/gram dry weight sediment) and the relative proportions of C37:2/C38:2 were performed at Brown University, USA. The C37 total (ng/gram dry weight sediment) was derived by normalizing these areas to the peak areas of the internal C36 and C37 n-alkane standards and dividing by the weight of the sample extracted. Gas chromatography and column conditions were optimized to allow for accurate quantification of the four C38 alkenones (we found that daily trimming of the chromatographic column and regular maintenance of the GC inlet is essential to avoid “drift” in the column retention of C38 alkenones relative to the C37 alkenones). Long-term laboratory analytical error, estimated from replicate extractions and gas chromatographic analyses of a composite sediment standard is equivalent in temperature to ±0.1 °C and to a relative error of 10 % in quantifying C37. The relative reproducibility of the C37:C38 indices was approximately 3% (N = 12 replicates). We use the C37 total and the relative proportions of C37:2/C38:2 as paleoproductivity proxy.

Description: Alkenone extraction was performed at Brown University, USA and followed freeze-drying ~5 g of homogenized dry sediment, using 100% Dichloromethane (DCM) and a Dionex 200 Accelerated Solvent Extractor (ASE). Prior to quantification, extracts were evaporated with nitrogen and reconstituted with 200 µL of toluene spiked with n-hexatriacontane (C36) and n-heptatriacontane (C37) internal standards. Samples were purified by silica gel flash column chromatography to further isolate the ketone fraction. Alkenone concentrations (C37:2, C37:3, C38:3 ethyl, C38:3 methyl, C38:2 2ethyl and C38:2 methyl ketones, resolved to baseline under our chromatographic conditions) were determined using an Agilent Technologies 6890 gas chromatograph–flame ionization detector (GC-FID), with Agilent Technologies DB-1 column (60 m, 0.32 mm diameter and 0.10 mm film thickness). In the present dataset we provide the alkenone unsaturation ratio (Uk'37) and different translations to Sea Surface Temperature (SST) according to different calibrations.

Description: PCM00-78 box (C) and Kasten (KII-IV) cores were taken in the San Lazaro Basin (SLB) (sometimes referred to as the Soledad Basin) at (25° 10'N, 112° 45'W). The SLB is a suboxic fault-bounded basin 50 km offshore of the Baja California peninsula, with a surface area of ~3000 km2 and a water depth of 540 m. Weak-to-absent bioturbation promotes the preservation of laminated sediments, facilitating high-resolution SST reconstruction. Box core PCM00-78C was stratigraphically tied to Kasten core PCM00-KI via natural Pb decay and reconstructed SST measurements are reported here on a composite depth scale covering all sediment cores. Additional age control is provided by 137Cs and radiocarbon measurements (see manuscript for further details).

Description: Orbital tuning, the process of fitting sedimentary cycles to orbital periodicities, can estimate with high resolution the timing and duration of key events in the geological record. We formulate here orbital tuning as the inverse problem of finding the variation in sedimentation rate that matches sediment cycles with orbital periodicities. Instead of obtaining a single best estimate, we apply a Bayesian formulation and define a probability distribution of sedimentation rate variations that result in powerful orbital periodicities. By sampling this distribution with a Monte Carlo method, we quantify the uncertainty in the inferred sedimentation rates due to uncertainties in the tuning periods and to components of the sedimentary signal that are unrelated to orbital cycles. The method is applied to the chronology of a 30 m interval in the Cismon APTICORE borehole (Southern Alps, Italy) that includes the early Aptian oceanic anoxic event 1a (Selli Level), estimated to last 1.11 ± 0.11 Ma (95% interval). The d13C record shows a sudden negative shift of about -1 per mill at the base of the Selli Level (22-47 ka) followed by a recovery to preshift values in approx. 240 ka, consistent with a scenario where light carbon is quickly added and then flushed out of the oceanatmosphere system.
