    Notes: Pyrylium Compounds. XXVIII. Specifically Deuterated Carbo- and heterocycles via 2,4,6-Triaryl[3,5-2H2]pyrylium SaltsOn heating with catalytic amounts of bases(e.g. triethyl amine) in deuterated alcohols such as methan[2H]ol or ethan[2H]ol pseudobases of 2, 4, 6-triarylpyrylium salts 1 undergo fast1H/2H isotopic exchange reaction affording 1, 3, 5-triaryl[2, 4, 4-2H3]pent-2-ene-1,5-diones which with [2H] perchloric acid give highly deuterated 2, 4, 6-triaryl-[3, 5-2H] pyrylium perchlorates 8. These salts are obtainable also directly from 1 through a one-pot procedure by ring opening of the latter with deuterium oxide under the above-mentioned1H/2H isotopic exchange conditions followed by recyclization of the formed 1, 3, 5-triaryl[2, 4, 4-2H3]pent-2-ene-1, 5-diones with [2H]ClO4. Ring transformations of 2, 4, 6-triphenyl[3, 5-2H2]pyrylium perchlorate (8a) to 2, 4, 6-triphenyl[3, 5-2H2]nitrobenzene (9) 2, 4, 6-triphenyl[3, 5-2H2]pyridine (10), 1, 2, 4, 6-tetraphenyl[3, 5-2H2]pyrydinium perchlorate(11), 2, 4, 6-triphencyl[3, 5-2H2]thiopyrylium perchlorate(12), 2-benzoyl-3, 5-diphenyl[4-2H]furan (13), and 3, 5, 7-triphenyl-[4, 4, 6-2H3]4H-1, 2-diazepin (14) demonstrate the usability of pyrylium salts of type 8 as starting materials for syntheses of specifically deuterated carbo- and hetrocycles.

Notes: An arrangement for light induced vectorial charge separation is discussed in which the electron of the excited dye is transferred to an acceptor and the dye is recovered by electron tunneling through a high and narrow potential barrier. The possible relevance of the model in connection with photosynthesis is considered. Monolayers of Ru(II)-bipyridine complexes with long chain hydrocarbon substituents were investigated which may be useful as component in such arrangements. The surface pressure area isotherms of the monolayers were measured for various ionic compositions of the subphase, and the results demonstrate a strong effect of these ions on the structure of the layers. The layers were deposited on different substrates. The luminescence and its change by contacting the sample with water and by subsequent drying were found to be strongly dependent on the architecture of the layer assembly. Attempts of a photochemical cleavage of water with these assemblies failed. The pH-dependence of the absorption and the luminescence of a Ru(II) bipyridine-dicarboxylic acid complex in solution is interpreted by assuming that the electron in the excited state is localized in one pyridine part of the substituted ligand, the conjugation with the second half of the bipyridine carboxylic acid being negligible. Monolayer assemblies for measuring the energy transfer from the ruthenium complex to an adequate energy acceptor and from an adequate energy donor to the ruthenium complex were investigated. The results demonstrate that the deactivation of the excited ruthenium complex occurs mainly by passing the luminescent state.Assemblies were investigated for measuring the electron transfer from the excited ruthenium complex to an appropriate electron acceptor positioned in the carboxylate portion at the same interface as the electron donor. With bipyridinium ions as acceptor the ruthenium complex luminescence is quenched at average distances between acceptor molecules of about 10 Å, while this distance is 30, 60 und 75 Å for different cyanine dyes used instead of the ruthenium complex. A correlation between this distance and the ionization energy in the excited state of the donor is observed.

Description: Some open questions in the physics of bow shock formation, the evolution of the particle distributions from solar wind into the magnetosheath, and the acceleration of ions at the moment of the shock are summarized. A layout of the current situation is presented in view of recent theoretical developments and the new diagnostic tools provided by the Cluster mission. The transition of ions across the quasi-perpendicular bow shock and their downstream thermalization are discussed. The processes and spatial scales are found to be species dependent and are discussed for H(+), He(2+), and He(+). The theory of particle acceleration at quasi-parallel shocks are reviewed. It is shown how Cluster can study the time variable structures of the shock as predicted by hybrid simulation. It is emphasized that high time resolution measurement with simultaneous species separation is necessary for the study of the ion acceleration. Suggestions for the spacecraft separations at the bow shock are suggested.

Description: Possible activities and future goals for solar wind research in the post Soho era are discussed. Two major enterprises which will open up important fields in the future study of the Sun are addressed. The first deals with in situ study of the solar corona, a region that has not been accessible for direct study in the past. This exploratory work will include the coronal heating and the acceleration of the solar wind much closer to its origin and the determination of the charge states of a large number of ions as a diagnostic tool for fractionation processes in these regions. The second major goal will be the setting up of a baseline for the isotopic composition in the solar system by studying a sample from the Sun in detail. These studies will be complemented by a direct comparison with extra solar samples of interstellar pick up ions, which become accessible with the same instrumentation as is necessary for the detailed investigation of the solar wind's isotopic composition. In order to achieve these goals, advanced composition experiments are developed to investigate the solar wind with enhanced mass resolution, considerably increased geometrical factor, and improved time resolution. The placing of sophisticated mass/charge spectrometers, with the ability to investigate both charge and velocity distributions with enhanced time resolution, in the solar wind acceleration region, is also proposed.
