    Notes: Main chain liquid crystal thermoplastic polyesters and thermosetting epoxy resins were prepared using biphenyl mesogens. The melting points of the polyesters were effectively decreased by incorporating flexible methylene spacers into the polymer main chain. The liquid crystal epoxy resins exhibit high glass transition temperature, low thermal expansion coefficients, high dielectric strengths, and low dielectric loss. They are suitable for the preparation of self-reinforcing molecular composites. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Pyrococcus furiosus represents one of the most important hyperthermophilic bacteria isolated thus far because of its relatively high cell yields and rapid growth rates. Pyrococcus furiosus exhibits several interesting growth characteristics, especially in terms of biotic gas production, which were examined in this study. In the presence of elemental sulfur, both carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide production appeared to be strongly growth associated, while no significant hydrogen production was observed. In the absence of sulfur, hydrogen and carbon dioxide were produced by the organism and hydrogen inhibition was observed. The addition of elemental sulfur to the medium apparently eliminated, hydrogen inhibition as growth proceeded normally even when hydrogen was added to the gas phase. Also, no apparent substrate limitation or toxic product could be attributed to the cessation of growth as cell growth in spent media was at least as good as in fresh media. An unstructured growth model was used to correlate growth and gas production for P. furiosus in complex seawater-based media at 98° C both in the absence and presence of elemental sulfur. The model was shown to be useful for examining some of the observations made in this study.

    Notes: An investigation was made of the optical and waveguiding properties of thin films fabricated from solutions of chitosan-acetic acid (chitosan/HAc) and chitosan/HAc doped with rare-earth metal ions (Er+++ or Nd+++). For all three films, the refractive indices were approximately 1.5 and there was nearly no absorption in the range of 300 to 2700 nm. The optical loss in a waveguides was less than 0.5 dB/cm. Morphological observations disclosed that all the films possessed a dense and homogeneous amorphous structure with smooth surfaces. Extrinsic scattering, especially the scattering caused by surface impurities, was the dominating factor affecting the optical loss value. It is also interesting to note that for all the films, doped with rare-earth metal ions or not, the morphological characteristics were alike and the optical properties were similar. Doping rare-earth metal ions into chitosan thin films did not seriously influence optical waveguiding. This paper reports, we believe, the first study of chitosan films for optical applications. The experimental results demonstrate that chitosan and its derivatives are potential candidates for optical materials. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Thermally stimulated discharge current (TSDC) analysis has been used to characterize the low-temperature (100-300 K) molecular relaxation processes (β relaxation) of an epoxy resin. Experiments were performed on a resin system composed chiefly of tetraglycidyl-4,4′-diaminodiphenyl-methane and diaminodiphenyl sulfone (TGDDM/DDS). Polarization of the epoxy of the resin appears to be due to preferential orientations of dipoles in the temperature range studied. The broad β-dispersion peak exhibits considerable “structure,” and it promises to prove rich in information related to polarization and relaxation processes in the epoxy resins. It is seen that TSDC can reveal clearly the difference between the degree of curing for epoxy resins. Temperature dependence of a mean activation energy calculated from the discharging processes reveals several temperature ranges over which common molecular relaxation events are probably occurring.
