Notes: ---The reaction of tert-butylalkynyl chromium Fischer carbene complex 1 with nitrones 2 affords β-enamino-ketoaldehydes 4 by the light-promoted rearrangement of the corresponding [3+2] cycloadduct carbene complexes 3. On the other hand, [3+2] cycloaddition of chiral nonracemic Fischer alkenyl carbene complexes 19 with nitrilimines 10 yields enantiomerically pure Δ2-pyrazolines with high regio- and diastereoselectivity.

Notes: 4-Amino-1-azadienes 1 react with α,β-unsaturated Fischer carbene complexes at -40°C to give stereoselectively a variety of substituted 3H-4,5-dihydroazepines 3; similarly, 1-hydroxy-1-azadienes (α,β-unsaturated oximes) 6 afforded the corresponding azepine derivatives 7. Chiral, nonracemic carbene complexes 11 gave azepines 12-13 (d.e. = 40-44%) upon reaction with oxime 6a; the major isomers were obtained in a diastereomerically and enantiomerically pure form (45-50% overall yield) after crystallization. An X-ray structure of 12a allowed assignment of the absolute stereochemistry. The acid hydrolysis of azepines synthesized provided racemic and enantiomerically pure 1,6-dicarbonyl compounds (±)-5, (±)-9, and (-)-14, as well as diol (-)-15. The mechanism of the reaction of 1 and 2 was investigated by multinuclear (1H, 13C, 15N, and 183W) NMR characterization of four intermediates (A, B, C, and D) at low temperature. The experimental sequence of events involves: i) 1,2-nucleophilic addition of the unsubstituted imine nitrogen of 1 to the metal carbene function (zwitterion A, -60°C), ii) cyclization to the seven-membered ring with 1,2-migration of the pentacarbonyl metal (zwitterion B, -40°C), iii) reductive elimination and coordination of the metal to the amine nitrogen (intermediate C, -40°C), and iv) thermal decomplexation and tautomerization (intermediate D and compound 3, above -20°C).

Notes: 2-Methyl-1,3-dimorpholino-1,3-butadiene 1 reacted with α,β-unsaturated Fischer carbene complexes to give a wide range of different products depending on the substitution pattern. Thus, sevenmembered rings (4, 5 and 6) could be obtained from chromium complexes 2 with aromatic or vinylic groups at the β position. Similar results were observed when α-methyl-substituted carbene complex 7 a was used. Six-membered carbocycles (derivatives of cycloadducts 12 and 13) were isolated after reaction with both chromium and tungsten complexes bearing one or two alkyl groups at the β position (10 and 11). Moreover, cyclopentenones 20 were the main products when the starting carbene complexes were alkyl-substituted at both α and β positions (19a, b) or when aromatic (19c, d) instead of vinylic complexes were used. A bicyclo[4.1.0]heptene system 18 has also been obtained in the special case of reaction with β,β-dimethylvinylchromium complex 13b; its formation could be explained as a formal carbene insertion into a C-H bond. The behaviour of diene 1 towards alkoxymethylcarbene complexes 22 was unusual. The different reaction products (cyclopentadienes 23, bicyclo[3.1.0]hexenes 24, aromatic amine 25 and metallatrienes 26) imply a mechanism in which the deprotonation of the carbene complex by the diene is followed by Michael addition to the iminium salt formed.
