    Description: Version 2.0 of the Italian Macroseismic Database DBMI15 has been released in November 2019, and replaces the prevision version 1.5 (Locati et al. 2016) that was released in July 2016. This minor revision extend the time-coverage to the years between 2015 and 2017 and contains the correction of a few compilation errors; changes between v1.5 and v2.0 of DBMI15 are detailed in Section 6; changes occurred between DBMI11 (Locati et al., 2011) and DBMI15 are described in Section 5. DBMI v2.0 makes available a set of macroseismic intensity data related to Italian earthquakes and covers the time-window 1000-2017. Intensity data derive from studies by authors from various Institutions, both in Italy and bordering countries (France, Austria, Slovenia, and Croatia). Macroseismic Data Points (MDPs) are collected and organized in DBMI for several scopes. The main goal is to create a homogenous set of data for assessing earthquake parameters (epicentral location and magnitude) for compiling the Parametric Catalogue of Italian Earthquakes (CPTI). The data provided by DBMI are also used for compiling the seismic history of thousands of Italian localities (15332 in DBMI15), in other words the list of effects observed in a place through time as a consequence of earthquakes, expressed as macroseismic intensity degrees. As they are closely linked, DBMI and CPTI have been published together, and using the same release version (e.g. DBMI04-CPTI04, DBMI11-CPTI11), but in two distinct websites. From this release, DBMI and CPTI (Rovida et al., 2019) are made available using a unified website generated using an updated version of the software MIDOP (Locati and Cassera 2010).

    Description: La versione 2.0 del Database Macrosismico Italiano chiamata DBMI15 è stata rilasciata a novembre 2019 e aggiorna e sostituisce la precedente versione 1.5 (Locati et al. 2016). Le variazioni tra la versione 1.5 e la 2.0 sono dettagliate al paragrafo 6; le variazioni tra le versioni DBMI11 (Locati et al., 2011) e DBMI15 sono descritte al paragrafo 5. DBMI v2.0 fornisce un set di dati di intensità macrosismica relativo ai terremoti italiani aggiornato alla finestra temporale 1000-2017. I dati provengono da studi di autori ed enti diversi, sia italiani che di paesi confinanti (Francia, Svizzera, Austria, Slovenia e Croazia). I dati di intensità macrosismica (MDP, Macroseismic Data Point) sono raccolti e organizzati da DBMI per diverse finalità. La principale è fornire una base di dati per la determinazione dei parametri epicentrali dei terremoti (localizzazione e stima della magnitudo) per la compilazione del Catalogo Parametrico dei Terremoti Italiani (CPTI). L’insieme di questi dati consente inoltre di elaborare le “storie sismiche” di migliaia di località italiane (15332 in DBMI15 v2.0), vale a dire l’elenco degli effetti di avvertimento o di danno, espressi in termini di gradi di intensità macrosismica, osservati nel corso del tempo a causa di terremoti. Dato il loro stretto legame, DBMI e CPTI sono stati pubblicati insieme e usano una stessa numerazione (DBMI04-CPTI04, DBMI11-CPTI11), ma in due diversi siti web. A partire da questa versione si è deciso di rendere disponibile le due banche dati DBMI15 e CPTI15 (Rovida et al., 2019) da un unico sito web generato con una versione aggiornata del software MIDOP (Locati e Cassera 2010) al fine di rendere più semplice e funzionale la consultazione.

    Description: The 24 August 2016 earthquake very heavily struck the central sector of the Apennines among the Lazio,Umbria, Marche and Abruzzi regions, devastating the town of Amatrice, the nearby villages and other localities along the Tronto valley. In this paper we present the results of the macroseismic field survey carried out using the European Macroseismic Scale (EMS) to take the heterogeneity of the building stock into account. We focused on the epicentral area, where geological conditions may also have contributed to the severity of damage. On the whole, we investigated 143 localities; the maximum intensity 10 EMS has been estimated for Amatrice, Pescara del Tronto and some villages in between. The severely damaged area (8-9 EMS) covers a strip trending broadly N-S and extending 15 km in length and 5 km in width; minor damage occurred over an area up to 35 km northward from the epicenter.

    Description: The Italian Parametric Earthquake Catalogue (CPTI) represents the most extensive and reliable source of parameters for earthquakes in Italy and surrounding areas. Since its first introduction in 1999, CPTI benefits from the results of the 30-years-long Italian tradition in historical earthquake research that, still today, keeps on providing a wealth of studies and macroseismic data. Such data have been collected, homogenized and made available through several releases of the related macroseismic database (DBMI). In 2016, the fourth release of CPTI and DBMI, has been finalized. They provide the most advanced and updated sets of macroseismic and instrumental data and parameters, and cover the time-span 1000-2014 with earthquakes with maximum intensity I ≥ 5 or magnitude Mw ≥ 4.0. The catalogue lists 4574 events, 70% of which accompa- nied by intensity data points (about 125’000 as a whole). Macroseismic data derive from 185 studies, 54 of them are new with respect to the previous version CPTI11. Parameters related to historical earthquakes are completely re-assessed, and magnitudes from macroseismic data are derived with new intensity-to-Mw relationships. Such relationships are based on the same dataset that contributes updated instrumental magnitudes to the catalogue. Either Mw from moment tensor solutions or proxies calculated with new published conversion relationship are considered. If available, both macroseismic and instrumental parameters are provided, together with a set of “preferred ones”, which consist of a selection between the macroseismic and the instrumental epicentres, and the weighted average of the macroseismic and instrumental magnitudes.

    Description: Contemporary newspapers and seismological literature describe in detail an earthquake occurred on December 31, 1948 in the Monti Reatini area (central Apennines, Italy). The seismic sequence that had this event as its main shock started in December 1948, went on for most of 1949 and was recorded in full by an unpublished regional earthquake catalogue compiled in 1980. However, none of the Italian parametric earthquake catalogues printed from the 1980s onwards records either the December 31, 1948 earthquake or the earliest part of the 1948 - 1949 sequence. This paper describes how the “forgotten” event of December 31, 1948 was rediscovered and reinstated as one of the main quakes on record in the Monti Reatini area.

    Description: In this paper we describe the macroseismic effects produced by the long and destructive seismic sequence that hit Central Italy from 24 August 2016 to January 2017. Starting from the procedure adopted in the complex field survey, we discuss the characteristics of the building stock and its classification in terms of EMS-98 as well as the issues associated with the intensity assessment due to the evolution of damage caused by multiple shocks. As a result, macroseismic intensity for about 300 localities has been determined; however, most of the intensities assessed for the earthquakes following the first strong shock on 24 August 2016, represent the cumulative effect of damage during the sequence. The earthquake parameters computed from the macroseismic datasets are compared with the instrumental determinations in order to highlight critical issues related to the assessment of macroseismic parameters of strong earthquakes during a seismic sequence. The results also provide indications on how location and magnitude computation can be strongly biased when dealing with historical seismic sequences.

    Description: We present here the results of a five-years-long earthquake educational project aiming to commemorate the hundredth anniversaries of five large Northern Apennines earthquakes occurred between 1916 and 1920 in the areas of: Rimini (1916, Mw 6.1), Valtiberina (1917, Mw 5.9), Romagna Apennines (1918, Mw 5.9), Mugello (1919, Mw 6.3) and Garfagnana (1920, Mw 6.5) earthquakes. We saw these anniversaries as the occasion for leading the Northern Apennines people to rediscover their past, in a positive way, and to improve their awareness of the earthquake as a natural feature of the regions in which they live. The activities that we planned for schools students encouraged them to go hunting for traces of the earthquakes of one hundred years ago in their home towns and to rediscover the memories and traditions of their communities. Together with their teachers, we also led the teenagers to find creative ways to involve the grownups in the process of discovery and knowledge. The Project had to cope with two emergencies: the great Central Italy earthquake of 2016-2017 and the Covid-19 epidemic. However, these stumbling blocks did not deter teachers and students from taking part in the process actively and even enthusiastically. Their families and communities were actively involved too. This experience taught us some valuable lessons. First of all, we learned to adapt the project, as we had conceived it at the start, to a wide gamma of social and cultural contexts. Not all the involved communities were equally aware of the level of seismic risk they are exposed to. On the affluent Adriatic coast, where tourism is the main source of income, past earthquakes are something best forgotten, by citizens and administrators alike. On the contrary, in the poorer inland mountain areas (Forlivese Apennines, Mugello, Garfagnana and Lunigiana) a more down-to-earth attitude prevails: earthquakes are looked upon as something that can and does happen and people are quick to grasp how important it is to contribute to initiatives whose aim is reducing seismic risk. Thus, we had to adapt our approach to the different contexts, modifying each time the activities we proposed to the schools with the aim of obtain the best possible results from each situation. Presentiamo i risultati di un progetto di educazione al rischio sismico attivato in occasione dei centenari di cinque terremoti storici che hanno colpito l’Appennino settentrionale tra gli anni 1916 e 1920 e precisamente i terremoti di Rimini 1916 (Mw 6.1), Valtiberina 1917 (Mw 5.9), Appennino romagnolo 1918 (Mw 5.9), Mugello 1919 (Mw 6.3) e Garfagnana 1920 (Mw 6.5). Abbiamo pensato di utilizzare questi anniversari come punto di partenza per accompagnare i cittadini a riappropriarsi del loro passato in modo positivo, facendo crescere la loro consapevolezza del terremoto come un carattere del loro ambiente naturale. A tal fine, nelle attività realizzate con le scuole, abbiamo incoraggiato gli studenti a cercare le tracce dei terremoti di un secolo fa nell’ambiente urbanizzato e a indagare le memorie e le tradizioni ancora presenti nelle comunità. Insieme ai loro insegnanti abbiamo spinto i ragazzi a trovare modi creativi per coinvolgere gli adulti in questo processo di scoperta e conoscenza. Il progetto è stato messo alla prova dal forte terremoto dell’Italia centrale (2016­2017) e dall’epidemia di Covid­19, ma nonostante queste difficoltà insegnanti e studenti hanno partecipato con grande interesse a questo percorso e hanno coinvolto nelle attività del progetto le famiglie e le comunità locali. Anche noi abbiamo imparato nuove lezioni. Un aspetto importante che abbiamo appreso è il bisogno di adattare il progetto a contesti sociali e culturali che si sono rivelati molto diversi. Le comunità coinvolte non condividono lo stesso livello di consapevolezza del rischio: sulla costa adriatica, a vocazione turistica, i terremoti sono qualcosa che è meglio dimenticare, sia da parte dei cittadini che dalle amministrazioni. Al contrario, nell’Appennino forlivese, nel Mugello, in Garfagnana e Lunigiana, i terremoti sono una presenza costante e le persone si sono sentite subito coinvolte in un processo attivo di riduzione del rischio e di attenzione quotidiana. Questo ci ha spinto ad adattare ogni volta l’approccio ai diversi contesti, modificando le proposte di attività che abbiamo realizzato nelle scuole.

    Description: In Italy, historical research on earthquakes has a long and glorious tradition, which in recent decades has gone through very different phases. In the first half of the 1980s and up to the mid- 90s, two very demanding research ventures were developed: the research program financed by ENEL for the qualification of sites susceptible to nuclear plants in three areas of the country (Piedmont, Lombardy, Puglia), later merged into the “Catalog of Strong Italian Earthquakes” (CFTI) of the ING/INGV, and the “Hazard project” of the GNDT/CNR, aimed at preparing all the basic data necessary for a model of hazard updated. As part of these two ventures, for about a decade over a hundred researchers, mostly “professional” historians, have worked to update their knowledge of Italian historical earthquakes. Researches developed by the “Hazard Project” - complementary to those of the CFTI - aimed only at rapidly re-evaluating the knowledge on about 600 intermediate energy earthquakes. Some of these studies, after a couple of decades, are now largely obsolete. For this reason, a work plan was launched aimed at deepening the knowledge on several dozens of these studies, marked in the current Parametric Catalog of Italian Earthquakes (CPTI15) by the initials AMGNDT95, providing them with an updated and, hopefully, better database. This work presents the results of research carried out on 6 earthquakes included in the 1949– 1971 time span. Such researches have allowed a significant improvement of the epicentral parameters of these earthquakes and, at the same time, an enhancement of seismic histories of numerous localities.
