    Description: The hydrated lime-volcanic ash mortars of imperial age concrete construction in Rome owe their extraordinary durability to a specific alteration facies of scoriaceous ash from the Pozzolane Rosse ignimbrite, erupted at 456±3 ka from Alban Hills volcano. Stratigraphic, petrographic, and chemical investigations demonstrate that during the warm, humid period preceding marine isotope stage 11, hydrolytic pedogenesis produced an argillic horizon in Pozzolane Rosse, with thick illuvial clay that had little reactivity with hydrated lime, as shown by mortars from the Forum of Julius Caesar (46 to 44 BC). In the underlying soil horizon, however, translocated halloysite overlies opal and poorly crystalline clay surface coatings. Imperial age mortars, as from the Forum and Markets of Trajan (AD 96 to 115), show strong reactivity of these components, altered scoria groundmass, and zeolites with hydrated lime. Romans deliberately selected this alkali-rich ash for optimal performance of pozzolanic concretes.

    Description: The building materials of the Theatre of Marcellus, 44–11 BCE, reflect Roman builders’ careful selections of tuff and travertine for dimension stone and volcanic aggregates for pozzolanic concretes. The vitric–lithic–crystal Tufo Lionato tuff dimension stone contains a high proportion of lava lithic fragments, which increase its compressive strength and decrease water sorption, enhancing durability. Sophisticated installations of travertine dimension stone reinforce the tuff masonry, which is integrated with durable concrete walls and barrel vaults. The pozzolanic mortars of the concretes contain harenae fossiciae mainly from the intermediate alteration facies of the mid-Pleistocene, scoriaceous Pozzolane Rosse pyroclastic flow. They have pervasive interpenetrating pozzolanic cements, including strätlingite, similar to highquality, imperial era mortars. Concrete walls are faced with refined Tufo Lionato opus reticulatum and tufelli, and opus testaceum of fired, greyish-yellow brick. The exploratory concrete masonry, which includes some of the earliest examples of brick facings and strätlingite cements in Rome, and the integration of these materials in complex architectural elements and internal spaces, reflect the highly skilled workmanship, rigorous work-site management and technical supervision of Roman builders trained in republican era methods and materials.

    Description: The rocks of Alban Hills and Monti Sabatini volcanoes (Central Italy) and their associated epiclastic deposits have been extensively used as building material in ancient Rome from about VIIIth century BCE to IVth century CE. However, the identification of the source areas of these rocks is difficult due to the lack of an integrated stratigraphic and geochemical analysis of the relationships between the two volcanic districts, and to the alteration affecting the primary products as consequence of weathering and pedogenetic processes. Here, a comprehensive, upgraded stratigraphic and geochronological review of the two volcanic districts, corroborated by new geochronological data for several eruptive units and altered deposits is presented, coupled to a complete geochemical background, achieved by means of newly determined major and trace element analyses for all the main eruptive units. A study of the alteration processes of the primary products is also presented, and the age of the main weathering and pedogenetic phases, associated to Quaternary climatic changes, are also investigated. The results are integrated with those from literature in order to construct discriminant diagrams based on selected trace elements, and allow us to characterize the primary and altered volcanic deposits in the Rome area, distinguish products of different volcanic districts, discuss the effects of different weathering processes on the mobility of some elements, and provide a reference frame for the provenance of the volcanic materials employed in ancient Roman masonry. The interdisciplinary data set and results presented here provide groundwork for volcanological, climate, pedological and archaeological provenance studies.

    Description: A 350m deep boreholewas drilled in the Colli Albani volcanic district (Central Italy) in order to: understand the shallow crust structure beneath the volcanic complex; characterize the rock physical properties especially through in-situ measurements and, afterward, laboratory experiments; assess the local present-day stress field; install a broad-band seismometer at depth. The borehole is located adjacent to the western rim of the Tuscolano–Artemisio caldera, where several phenomena of unrest recently occurred. In 1989–90 a seismic swarm affected this area and a related uplift was recognized. In addition, high gas concentrations (mainly CO2 and H2S), in aquifers and soils, caused illnesses and casualties among inhabitants and animals in the past. We describe the investigations carried out at the drill site and the results achieved from data analysis.Wire-line drilling produced a complete stratigraphic record of the Quaternary volcanic units down to the Plio–Pleistocene sedimentary sequence and geophysical logs allowed a characterization of the rock physical properties. From a tectonic point of view, data provided by Dipmeter and Borehole Televiewer were used for investigations on the recent and present-day stress field and the results are compared to those available in the literature. In the volcanic units we recognized two main fracture systems, SW and NW dipping. Several faults intersecting the borehole showplaneswith oblique striae, indicating a prevalent strike–slip component of the movement. Finally, borehole breakout analysis defined an active stress field with a ∼E–Woriented minimum horizontal component. At the end of the drilling, a blow-out occurred, due to pressurized fluids trapped into the sandy unit drilled in the last fewmeters of the hole. Sampling these fluids gave an additional value to the borehole, providing information about the deep volcanic circulation and its possible connection to a deep-seated magma chamber. The main results show water with a Na–HCO3 chemistry and the highest salinity ever recognised in the area (Electrical Conductivity=10.12 mS/cm). Stable O and H isotopes reveal ameteoric origin ofwater and the absence of tritium points out a long residence time in the aquifer. Emitted gas is CO2-dominated, with N2 as second most important component. Helium isotopic composition of the gas allows us to estimate a magmatic component ranging in the interval 40–50%, one of the highest in the Colli Albani. Carbon isotopes of CO2 (−0.53‰ vs. PDB) suggest that it could derive partly froma magmatic source and partly by the thermal decarbonation of the carbonatic basement.

    Description: For the first time in Italy, a borehole was drilled SE of Rome in the Colli Albani volcanic district for scientific purposes. The 350m borehole contributes to understand the structure and the dynamics of the shallow crust in the Quaternary volcanic complex now quiescent, characterizing the rock units and defining the present stress field and its evolution in recent times. The borehole will host a broad-band seismometer for good seismicity records in a very urbanized area. We present the preliminary results of borehole data analysis and the ongoing researches. The well is located in the most interesting area of the volcanic complex where: 1) most seismic swarms occur; 2) geodetic and satellite investigations determined an ongoing uplift; 3) gas (CO2 and H2S) concentration in water is high; 4) local tectonics is peculiar and 5) stress data lack. Wireline drilling produced a complete stratigraphic record of the volcanic units down to the sedimentary basement. Biostratigraphic analysis are performed for a complete reconstruction of sedimentary sequence. Down-hole logs were carried out such as: gamma-ray, resistivity, sonic, borehole televiewer, caliper and magnetic susceptibility. Due to the shallow depth the whole logs are compared with cores. The Gamma-Ray provides a clear characterization of volcanic units and the definition of the intervals that most contribute to radioactivity. Resistivity and Sonic logs give a major definition of the different units and their characters. Caliper log and BHTV supply data (breakouts, fractures and faults) from which we interpret the main tectonic features and the present-day stress. Moreover a detailed magnetic susceptibility analysis is performed on shale samples. The blow-out occurred in the deeper sandy unit, allowed to sample deep fluids, that are now being analysed and will contribute to better understand the complex fluid flow. Mechanical analysis at high pressure and temperature are planned to understand the behavior of the volcanic rocks. Dynamic tests on Pliocene clays will determine parameters useful for the local seismic response; the result will be joined to the sonic log and volcanic laboratory measurements (Vp/Vs), providing data on real seismic behavior of these units.

    Description: Some of the most structurally innovative concrete vaults built in imperial Rome employed lightweight volcanic rocks to reduce the lateral thrust on the supporting walls, the most famous being the Pantheon. Roman concrete (opus caementicium) was made up of mortar binding together pieces of large aggregate (caementa) usually ranging from 10 to 20 cm long, which were hand laid in the mortar (as opposed to being poured as is typical in modern concrete), so that it resembles mortared rubble. A key aspect of the development of large-scale concrete vaulting was the ability to regulate the weight of the ingredients in order to reduce the weight of the vaults and to control the forces within the structure. The volcanic environment along the west coast of Italy provided numerous stones of different weights and physical properties from which the builders could choose (Fig. 1), including pumice and scoria, which were the most common choices for the lightweight caementa of the most innovative vaulted structures. Because these materials were produced by many of the Italian volcanoes, our goal was to establish the provenance of those used in vaults in Rome in order to understand better the supply network. We first used thin sections to narrow the potential sources and then we submitted selected samples to X-ray fluorescence
