Notizen: Abstract  The massive unit of a lava flow from Porri volcano (Salina, Aeolian Islands) displays many unusual structures related to the physical interaction between two different magmas. The magma A represents approximately 80% of the exposed lava surface; it has a crystal content of 51 vol.% and a dacitic glass composition (SiO2=63–64 wt.%). The magma B has a basaltic-andesite glass composition (SiO2=54–55 wt.%) and a crystal content of approximately 18 vol.%. It occurs as pillow-like enclaves, banding, boudin-like and rolling structures which are hosted in magma A. Structural analysis suggests that banding and boudin-like structures are the result of the deformation of enclaves at different shear strain. The linear correlation between strain and stratigraphic height of the measured elements indicates a single mode of deformation. We deduce that the component B deformed according to a simple shear model. Glass analyses of the A–B boundary indicate that A and B liquids mix together at high shear strain, whereas only mingling occurs at low shear strain. This suggests that the amount of deformation (i.e. forced convection) plays an important role in the formation of hybrid magmas. High shear strain may induce stretching, shearing and rolling of fluids which promote both forced convection and dynamical diffusion processes. These processes allow mixing of magmas with large differences in their physical properties.

Notizen: Abstract  A basaltic andesite lava flow from Porri Volcano (Salina, Southern Tyrrhenian Sea) is composed of two different magmas. Magma A (51 vol.% of crystals) has a dacitic glass composition, and magma B (18 vol.% of crystals), a basaltic glass composition. Magma B is hosted in A and consists of sub-spherical enclaves and boudin-like, banding and rolling structures (RS). Four types of RS have been recognized: σ–type;δ–type; complex σ-δ–types and transitional structures between sub-spherical enclaves and rolling structures. An analysis of the RS has been performed in order to reconstruct the flow kinematics and the mechanism of flow emplacement. Rolling structures have been selected in three sites located at different distances from the vent. In all sites most RS show the same sense of shear. Kinematic analysis of RS allows the degree of flow non-coaxiality to be determined. The non-coaxiality is expressed by the kinematic vorticity number Wk, a measure of the ratio Sr between pure shear strain rate and simple shear strain rate. The values of Wk calculated from the measured shapes of microscopic RS increase with increasing distance from the vent, from approximately 0.5 to 0.9. Results of the structural analysis reveal that the RS formed during the early–intermediate stage of flow emplacement. They represent originally sub-spherical enclaves deformed at low shear strain. At higher strain, RS deformed to give boudin-like and stretched banding structures. Results of the kinematic analysis suggest that high viscosity lava flows are heterogeneous non-ideal shear flows in which the degree of non-coaxiality increases with the distance from the vent. In the vent area, deformation is intermediate between simple shear and pure shear. Farther from the vent, deformation approaches ideal simple shear. Lateral extension processes occur only in the near-vent zone, where they develop in response to the lateral push of magma extruded from the vent. Lateral shortening processes develop in the distal zone and record the gravity-driven movement of the lava. The lava flow advanced by two main mechanisms, lateral translation and rolling motion. Lateral translation equals rolling near the vent, while rolling motion prevailed in the distal zones.

Beschreibung: The structures of the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea active volcanoes have been successfully investigated through the use of the magnetic data. Particularly, several high resolution aeromagnetic campaigns have been carried out on the Aeolian Archipelago and its western limit by the Airborne Geophysics Science Team of Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia of Roma. The results indicate that the volcanism is controlled by tectonic structures both at local and regional scale. The emplacement of magnetized bodies (e.g. volcanic conduits, dikes swarms, intrusions) is along or strictly correlated with this tectonic framework. The consolidation of highly magnetized material inside the volcanic conduits determines contrast with surrounding less magnetized material producing intense magnetic anomalies. Therefore, modeling of these sources is suggestive of the position and deep extent of eruptive vents, especially in the offshore area, where we do not know where future submarine activity may take place (De Ritis et al., 2005). We present here a case study were the magnetic tool resolved a geological interpretative problem that was not settled earlier. In fact, in the Calabria mainland, widespread, dacitic to rhyolitic pumices with calc-alkaline affinity of Pleistocene age (1-0.7 Ma) are exposed. The tephra falls are related to explosive activity and show thickness decreasing from the Capo Vaticano area southeastward. The lithics indicate a source located not far from Capo Vaticano. The interpretation of the magnetic anomaly field together with the other geological and geophysical data has allowed to discover the presence of a previously unknown volcanic structure (De Ritis et al., 2010), very close to the Calabria Western coast (Capo Vaticano). Aeromagnetic data collected between the Panarea island and the Calabria arc highlight a WNW-ESE elongated positive magnetic anomaly centered on the Capo Vaticano morphological ridge. Forward and inverse modeling show a magnetized body extending from the bathymetric surface to about 3 km of depth. The magnetic properties of such a body are consistent with those of the medium to highly evolved volcanic rocks of the Aeolian Arc, i.e. dacites and rhyolites. The combined interpretation of the magnetic and available geological data reveal that (1) the Capo Vaticano WNW- ESE elongated positive magnetic anomaly is due to the occurrence of a WNW-ESE elongated sill; (2) such a sill represents the remnant of the plumbing system of a Pleistocene volcano that erupted explosively producing the pumice tephra exposed in Calabria; and (3) the volcanism is consistent with the Aeolian products, in terms of age, magnetic signature, and geochemical affinity of the erupted products. The results indicate that such volcanism developed along seismically active faults transversal to the general trend of the Aeolian Arc and Calabria block, in an area where uplift is maximized (4 mm/yr). Such uplift could also be responsible for fragmentation of the upper crust and formation of transversal faults along which seismic activity and volcanism occur.

Beschreibung: Volcanic islands represent the later stage of an early submarine volcanic activity and show different morphologies re fl ecting the geometry of shallow plumbing systems, magma output rate, gravitational instability, and erosive phases. Two end ‐ member morphologies may be recognized: (a) rift ‐ like elongated edi fi ces and ‘ stellate ’ volcanoes and (b) cone ‐ shaped, central ‐ type volcanoes. While the evolution from early conical shapes to stellate shapes is relatively well known, the reverse is less constrained, commonly lacking geophysical and geological data to support it. We present magnetic forward and 3 ‐ D inverse models of the volcanic island of Salina (244 ‐ 15 ka; Aeolian Arc, Southern Tyrrhenian Sea) to characterize its shallow plumbing system. The detected magnetic sources are interpreted as the crystallized portions of dykes and vertical conduits. The dykes mainly characterize the offshore of Salina Island, whereas subcircular conduits are located onshore. The results show that the early, mainly submarine phases of Salina concentrated along dykes following weakness zones of tectonic signi fi cance. As the volcanism proceeded, the subaerial activity focused on two main cone ‐ shaped stratovolcanoes (Monte Fossa delle Felci and Monte dei Porri). The intersections among dykes and the progressive loading of volcanic products during the early growth of Salina are responsible for the transition from an early fi ssural basaltic activity to a later, basaltic to a last, more evolved central ‐ type volcanism. We conclude that intrusions along pre ‐ existing tectonic structures, dyke intersections, and loading processes related to the formation of a volcanic pile regulate the morphology and structural evolution of volcanic islands from the early, submarine phase to the later subaerial activity.

Beschreibung: Changbaishan, an intraplate volcano, is characterized by an approximately 6 km wide summit caldera and last erupted in 1903. Changbaishan experienced a period of unrest between 2002 and 2006. The activity developed in three main stages, including shield volcano (basalts), cone-construction (trachyandesites to trachytes with minor basalts), and caldera-forming stages (trachytes to comendites). This last stage is associated with one of the more energetic eruptions of the last millennium on Earth, the 946 CE, VEI 7 Millennium Eruption (ME), which emitted over 100 km3 of pyroclastics. Compared to other active calderas, the plumbing system of Changbaishan and its evolution mechanisms remain poorly constrained. Here, we merge new whole-rock, glass, mineral, isotopic, and geobarometry data with geophysical data and present a model of the plumbing system. The results show that the volcano is characterized by at least three main magma reservoirs at different depths: a basaltic reservoir at the Moho/lower crust depth, an intermediate reservoir at 10–15 km depth, and a shallower reservoir at 0.5–3 km depth. The shallower reservoir was involved in the ME eruption, which was triggered by a fresh trachytic melt entering a shallower reservoir where a comenditic magma was stored. The trachytes and comendites originate from fractional crystallization processes and minor assimilation of upper crust material, while the less evolved melts assimilate lower crust material. Syn-eruptive magma mingling occurred during the ME eruption phase. The magma reservoirs of the caldera-forming stage partly reactivate those of the cone-construction stage. The depth of the magma storage zones is controlled by the layering of the crust. The plumbing system of Changbaishan is vertically extensive, with crystal mush reservoirs renewed by the replenishment of new trachytic to trachyandesitic magma from depth. Unlike other volcanoes, evidence of a basaltic recharge is lacking. The interpretation of the signals preceding possible future eruptions should consider the multi-level nature of the Changbaishan plumbing system. A new arrival of magma may destabilize a part of or the entire system, thus triggering eruptions of different sizes and styles. The reference model proposed here for Changbaishan represents a prerequisite to properly understand periods of unrest to potentially anticipate future volcanic eruptions and to identify the mechanisms controlling the evolution of the crust below volcanoes.

Beschreibung: The magma plumbing systems of volcanoes in subduction and divergent tectonic settings are relatively well known, whereas those of intraplate volcanoes remain elusive; robust geophysical information on the magma pathways and storage zones is lacking. We inverted magnetotelluric data to image the magma plumbing system of an intraplate monogenetic volcanic field located above the stagnant Pacific slab in northeast China. We identified a complex, vertically aligned, low-resistivity anomaly system extending from the asthenosphere to the surface consisting of reservoirs with finger- to lens-like geometries. We show that magma forms as CO2-rich melts in a 150-km-deep asthenospheric plume crossing the whole lithosphere as hydrated melt, inducing underplating at 50 km depth, evolving in crustal reservoirs, and erupting along dikes. Intraplate volcanoes are characterized by low degrees of melting and low magma supply rates. Their plumbing systems have a geometry not so different from that of volcanoes in subduction settings.

Beschreibung: The identification of the mechanisms responsible for the deformation of calderas is of primary importance for our understanding of the dynamics of magmatic systems and the evaluation of volcanic hazards. We analyze twenty years (1997–2018) of geodetic measurements on Ischia Island (Italy), which include the Mt. Epomeo resurgent block, and is affected by hydrothermal manifestations and shallow seismicity. The data from the GPS Network and the leveling route show a constant subsidence with values up to 􀀀15 2.0 mm/yr and a centripetal displacement rate with the largest deformations on the southern flank of Mt. Epomeo. The joint inversion of GPS and levelling data is consistent with a 4 km deep source deflating by degassing and magma cooling below the southern flank of Mt. Epomeo. The depth of the source is supported by independent geophysical data. The Ischia deformation field is not related to the instability of the resurgent block or extensive gravity or tectonic processes. The seismicity reflects the dynamics of the shallow hydrothermal system being neither temporally nor spatially related to the deflation.

Beschreibung: Changbaishan volcano (China/North Korea border) consists of a cone with a summit caldera and last erupted in 1903. An unrest episode occurred between 2002 and 2006, followed by subsidence. The volcano was responsible for the largest eruption of the last Millennium in 946 CE and it is characterized by a multi-level plumbing system. Here, we analyze the Changbaishan 2018-2020 deformations by using remote sensing data, detecting an up to 20 mm/yr, NW-SE elongated nearly-uplift of its southeastern flank and a -20 mm/yr nearly-subsidence of the southwestern flank. Modeling results show that three active sources are responsible for the observed ground velocities: a deep tabular deflating source, a shallower inflating NW-SE elongated spheroid source, and a NW-SE striking dip-slip fault. The depth and geometry of the inferred sources are consistent with independent petrological and geophysical data. Our results reveal an upward magma migration from 14 km to 7.7 km. The modeling of the leveling data of the 2002-2005 uplift and 2009-2011 subsidence depicts sources consistent with the 2018-2020 active system retrieved. The past unrest is related to pressurization of the upper portion of the spheroid magma chamber, whereas the subsidence is due to crystallization of its floor, this latter reactivated in 2018-2020. Therefore, Changbaishan is affected by an active magma recharge controlled by a NW-SE trending fault system. Satellite data analysis is a key tool to unravel the magma dynamics at poorly monitored and crossborder volcanoes.

Beschreibung: Volcanic history of Santorini over recent years records a seismo-volcanic unrest in 2011–12 with a non-eruptive behavior. The volcano deformation state following the unrest was investigated through multi-sensor Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR) time series. We focused on the analysis of Copernicus Sentinel-1, Radarsat-2 and TerraSAR-X Multi-temporal SAR Interferometric (MT-InSAR) results, for the post-unrest period 2012–17. Data from multiple Sentinel-1 tracks and acquisition geometries were used to constrain the E-W and vertical components of the deformation field along with their evolution in time. The interpretation of the InSAR observations and modelling provided insights on the post-unrest deformation pattern of the volcano, allowing the further re-evaluation of the unrest event. The increase of subsidence rates on Nea Kameni, in accordance with the observed change of the spatial deformation pattern, compared to the pre-unrest period, suggests the superimposition of various deformation sources. Best-fitting inversion results indicate two deflation sources located at southwestern Nea Kameni at 1 km depth, and in the northern intra-caldera area at 2 km depth. A northern sill-like source interprets the post-unrest deflation attributed to the passive degassing of the magma intruded at 4 km during the unrest, while an isotropic source at Nea Kameni simulates a prevailing subsidence occurring since the pre-unrest period (1992–2010).

Beschreibung: Deception Island is one of the most active and best-documented volcanoes in Antarctica. Since its last eruption in 1970, several geophysical surveys have targeted reconstructing its magmatic systems. However, geophysics fails to reconstruct the pathways magma and fluids follow from depth to erupt at the surface. Here, novel data selection strategies and multi-frequency absorption inversions have been framed in a Geographical Information System, using all available geological (vents and faults distribution), geochemical and geophysical knowledge of the volcano. The result is the detection of these eruptive pathways. The model offers the first image of the magma and associated fluids pathways feed the 1967, 1969, and 1970 eruptions. Results suggest that future ascending paths might lead to active research bases and zones of planned helicopter rescue. The connection between seismic absorption, temperature, and fluid content makes it a promising attribute for detecting and monitoring eruptions at active calderas.
